I just caught a clip of this on ESPN and couldn't help but notice the similarities between what Spike Lee said and that of what Rush said. Not only did he say Bird was the most overated player, he said that the "white media" would make you think that there were no great players before Larry Bird. I could tell that McKindry was uncomfortable with the story and it's going to be interesting to see how other's respond. Maybe we can get a comment from Isiah Thomas and Dennis Rodman who said that if Bird was a black man, he'd be just another average B-ball player.
Did Thomas say that? As I remember he was dragged, as the team captain, into the mess because of what Rodman said.
Let 'em have it. I did.

I'm fine with recognizing individuals in team sports and individually he probably was among the best, but there is no debate that the Celtics with Larry Bird is one of the greatest teams of all time.
Never saw the movie, but I was an undergrad at LSU when Maravich was playing there. "Groanup" is correct.
I was listening to the 1988 Hawks/Celtics Game 7 which came down to the most amazing two man shoot out down the stretch I have ever "witnessed". It was like everyone else was frozen with Wilkins and Bird swapping shots without missing.
It came down to who blinked first.

He made some ridiculous comments about Larry Bird. Not only did he say Larry Bird was the most overated player, he said that the "white media" would make you think that there were no great players before Larry Bird. This is even more outrageous than Limbaugh's idiotic statements and I'm wondering what kind of response ESPN will have to this hate filled, race baiting, has-been film director.

I doubt that the gutless wonders that run ESPN will comment at all on Spike Lee's statements. Your probably afraid of being labeled 'racist' for questioning a black man on the subject of race.
Because, as I'm sure you all know, there is no such thing as a black racist. Only white people can be racist. Jesse Jackson tells me so.
Let's see how many sports reporters call up Bird and ask him for a reaction. Let's ask Bill Walton if he'll publicly trash Spike Lee the way Tom Jackson trashed Rush Limbaugh. I won't hold my breath.
If you won't respond to Spike Lee, then at least respond to me and answer this question:
What exactly is the difference between Spike Lee's comments and Rush Limbaugh's comments other than the race of the accuser and the accused?

It's a visious cycle. Spike complains that he would be more rich and famous if he was white. He's enourmously talented and could make popular movies of the Spielberg variety if he wanted, but he doesn't want to. If you don't want commercialism to polute your art, which I respect, don't complain becasue you're not as rich as Spielberg.
The real problem is a group of people that wake up every morning with the belief that every bad thing that happened to them the day before the result of white oppression.
Cornell West is another example. I like Dr. West for the most part. He's intelligent, articulate and has an engaging sense of humor. Until he gets on the '400 years of white oppression' kick. This is a guy that quit or got fired from Harvard and turned right around and got a job a Stanford. If that's oppression, I'll take a double helping, please. On the other hand he might think that if it were not for white oppression, he would be the President of Harvard.He might really believe that. I don't know what to call that type of thinking.
