This book is mostly surmise. Hitler had sexual hang ups and probably was no more gay then straight.

Hitler it seems did not care about homosexuals one way or the other. He was totally indifferent to them. Hitler had friends who were openly gay, openly bisexual and openly hostile and anti gay and he was comfortable with all of them.

The anti-gay policies were I think more Himmler's work then Hitler's. Himmler was a chicken breeder and his view of the world was based on trying to produce a good breed rather then upholding any Biblical morales. The Nazis did not hate gays because the Bible told them so. The Nazis hated male gays because they did note mate and produce more Aryans. Social Darwinisitic.

When the Himmler Nazis attacked homosexuals they attacked male homosexuals not because they were immoral but because male homosexuals did not produce children. Lesbians were pretty much left alone by the Nazis. Only male homosexuals were sent to concentration camps and made to wear the pink triangle.

PS: The Nazis hated the Wiemar Republic because of the chaotic nature of that republic not because of the indecent sex, etc. The Nazis actually published porno magazines sold openly in newsstands. I have the Time Life Book on it! The scenes were more like nudist magazines - nude women in the stream - on grass etc. The Nazis liked vice - they just wanted it redlined and redistricted and under their control.

Studying history makes you learn many weird things. Homosexuality in some European military circles seems to have been very wide spread probably because men were segregated from women and had to live in barracks. The Prussian/German military was one and the British Navy was another such institution:

Homosexuality in these military traditions I mentioned is like the homosexuality found in violent prisons. You find it exists in violent - harsh military traditions that use corporal punishment and humiliation to keep the men in line. That is why the Nazis seemed to gravitate to S/M and deviant sex.

Hitler was very charismatic and worried about his appearance.
Hitler was worried about purifying the body.
Hitler was willing to destroy whatever institution necessary to get his way.

Don't forget he was a staunch vegetarian socialist, and the original anti-tobacco nazi. Didn't drink either. Oddly, the "good guy" Allied leaders all drank, smoked and fooled around on their wives. At any rate, Herr Hitler would fit in real well at Berkeley with his predilictions, for the most part.

Nothing new. I read this in books about Hitler back in the 1970's when I was in high school.

Hitler was gay - and killed to hide it, book says

ADOLF Hitler was gay [homosexual] - or so says a sensational new biography on the Nazi dictator due to be published tomorrow. Eyewitness accounts from Hitler's former lovers, and historical documents that for the first time illuminate rumours that have circulated for over half a century, are disclosed in Hitler's Secret: The Double Life of a Dictator.

The respected German historian Lothar Machtan even claims in his book that Hitler ordered the deaths of several high-ranking Nazis to prevent the secret of his homosexuality from surfacing.

Ernst Röhm, the leader of Hitler's Sturm Abteilung or Storm Troopers, tried to blackmail Hitler by threatening to reveal his sexuality. Röhm, who was also gay, was murdered as a result, according to Machtan, a history teacher at Bremen University.

He refers to scores of historical documents to support his thesis. In 1915, the young Hitler was a dispatch rider at the front in France. Years later, yet before Hitler became infamous, one of his fellow soldiers, Hans Mend, wrote in his memoirs: 'At night, Hitler lay with Schmidl, his male whore.' Schmidl, otherwise known as Ernst Schmidt, and Hitler were 'inseparable lovers' for five years, according to Machtan.

Hitler's service notes read that as a result of the love affair there was reluctance among senior officers to promote him. According to Erich Ebermeier, a lawyer and writer who viewed Hitler's military files years later: 'Despite his bravery towards the enemy, because of his homosexual activity he lost out on a promotion to non-commissioned officer.'

Police reports from Munich after the First World War also suggest that Hitler was pursued by police because of his sexual orientation. 'As a "brown" [fascist] activist, Hitler managed to lure many young men to his side, but not only for political reasons,' says Machtan.

According to a Munich police protocol from the early part of the 20th century, a 22-year-old man called Joseph told the police: 'I spent the whole night with him.' Another, Michael, who was 18, told them: 'I had been unemployed for months, and my mother and my brother were always hungry, so, at his request, I accompanied the man to his home.' Another, a boy called Franz, said: 'He asked me if I'd like to stay with him and he told me his name was Adolf Hitler.'

The police reports were collected by Otto von Lossow, a German army general who took part in suppressing the Hitler putsch in 1923. He kept the Munich police file for years, as, he described it, 'a form of personal life insurance'. If Hitler had attempted to push him aside, he would have blackmailed him with the information, he said. The police documents were published some years ago in Rome by Eugen Dollmann, a close friend of Heinrich Himmler's and also Hitler's interpreter. But because his book never appeared in German, the startling information remained largely overlooked by historians.

Machtan says that Hitler was particularly drawn to Rudolf Hess, his deputy, who was known in party circles as 'black Emma' and with whom he had spent months in Landsberg prison.

Why, then, did the Nazis persecute homosexuals, sending hundreds of thousands of them to their deaths in labour camps and the gas chambers?

'Hitler himself never condemned homosexuality, but he allowed the persecution of gays in order to disguise his own true colours,' Machtan says.

Pedophilia was common in 19th century Germany and Austria. And it was not just little girls, but little boys who were commonly sexually assaulted--raped by pedophile priests, homosexual headmasters, older boys, and even relatives including "daddy."

Sexual assault was seen not just as a means of obtaining sexual satisfaction, but as a means to dominate and humiliate those weaker than one's self. The young Adolf, "Adolf" the effeminate and frail momma's boy, made for the perfect victim. Indeed, Klara, Adolf's mother, even dressed Adolf to look like a little girl.

According to Adolf, the sexual assaults may have begun at age 6.

It is likely, at least as gleaned through Adolf's writings and his bedtime phobias, that Alois inflicted these sexual outrages when he returned home in the dead of night, drunk and thoroughly intoxicated, perhaps tearing the sleeping Adolf from his mother's arms, or sexually assaulting the boy in his own bed; Adolf's little mouth serving as a servile, frightened female orifice.

Perhaps it is thus not surprising that even as an adult and the supreme ruler of Germany, Adolf was afraid to sleep alone at night, and suffered a mouth washing compulsion. He was so sickened by the thought of putting flesh in his mouth that he became a vegetarian.

Was his father forcing him to perform felatio?

The girlish Hitler--whose girlish mannerisms remained a Hitler characteristic even after he became the supreme leader of Germamy--may have been sexually molested not only by his father, but once he began school, by older school mates or teachers.

For example, at age 11 his demeanor and school work changed for the absolute worse--a behavior change which is a common sign suggestive of abuse.

At age 11, Adolf wrote upon a blackboard at school that he had engaged in sexual relations."I have committed fleshly sin, outside of marriage."

It may have been a teacher or pedophile priest who sexually molested little Adolf as this has been a priestly pastime for over a thousand years. Or perhaps he had engaged in sex with a younger classmate--as was suspected--acting out the ritual sexual abuse which occurred nightly at the hands of his drunken, brutal, and hyper-sexed father.

These nocturnal sexual traumas could well explain why up until the very end of his life Adolf was plagued by sexual nightmares. Adolf was obsessed with a fear that he might be attacked while sleeping by a man who would stuff something into his mouth, suffocating him (Langer, Rauschning).

Hitler in fact, was afraid to sleep alone as a youngster and as a young man for fear of being attacked (Kubizek); a fear that persisted after becoming Chancelor of Germany.

Hitler was afraid of the dark. He not only wanted company at night, but he had trouble falling asleep and staying asleep, and frequently voiced a fear of falling asleep when by himself (Speer).

He sometimes unwilling dozed off only to awake with a frightened and hysterical shout, screaming that someone was trying to put something in his mouth so that he could not breath. As described by one of his followers:

"Hitler wakes at night with convulsive shrieks; shouts for help. He sits on the edge of his bed, as if unable to stir. He shakes with fear making the whole bed vibrate. He gasps, as if imagining himself to be suffocating. On one occasion Hitler stood swaying in his room, looking wildly about him. "He! He! He's been here!" he stamped and shrieked in the familiar way."

Adolf, in fact, would frequently call for his adjutants, and demand that they sit up and watch over him. Even then he would refuse to sleep, but instead would carry on an aimless monologue.

Likewise, as a child, he slept with his mother, and as a young man, and after he moved from home, he slept with his intimate young friend and likely lover, August Kubizek.

Hitler, also had quite a fascination with beds which he associated with male dominance and power. As Fuerher he required that a man had to make his bed before he could sleep in it (Rauschning).

As a young man he also enjoyed forcing his roommate and very intimate and close friend, August Kubizek, to disrobe and climb into bed, at which point Hitler would begin to perform. While the naked Kubizek would watch adoringly from beneath the downy covers, Adolf would parade back and forth, yelling, screaming, making threats, and holding forth on some topic (Kubizek)--the residue of yet another compulsion to reenact a primal sex scene from his childhood?

There is a ho-hum movie about the young Hitler called Max which depicts Adolf the Artist as uniterested in sex and militantly opposed to smoking and drinking. He was known to be obsessed with his health, which was the main reason he became a vegetarian, although it is true that he was fond of animals.

Go see the play. It's an all out laugh riot!

I saw it in January and my cheeks hurt from smiling and laughing so much.

One of the last things I did in NYC before moving was catch the Producers with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick during their last weeks in the show, in Feburary 2002.

The show swept the Tonys as you probably recall, and I felt there was no way it could possibly live up to the hype. I am also a pretty tough critic. That being said, I enjoyed it immensely and it really won me over - though a lot of that has to go to the cast of Lane-Broderick-Huffman who were all there that night, no understudies.

The only letdown was that they 'gayed' up the story - I really prefer the characterization in the movie version with the hippie Hitler, as Dick Shawn really stole that movie in a big way.

All that being said, Mel Brooks is one of the luckiest SOB's in the business. He isn't nearly as funny as a lot of people (himself included) like to think, and he benefits greatly from associations with more talented people (Buck Henry on Get Smart, Gene Wilder on Wilder's original idea/script for Young Frankenstein, and the 8 or 9 co-screenwriters - including Richard Pryor who I feel is responsible for much of what is on screen - on Blazing Saddles).

When Mel works alone, it's seldom very pretty. History of the World and Spaceballs were letwowns. Most of his projects during the last 2 decades were awful. Indeed, except for his sucess with The Producers on Broadway, he had been relying on luck and reputation for almost 20 years.

Brooks ticks me off because he was making the rounds when The Producers opened, and he tells his old line about how he feels its his mission to make Hilter funny and to make people laugh at Hitler, feeling that is the best legacy for the demented dictator is that of joke and punch-line. I have no problem with any of that, but Mel is royally full of himself if he really believes that.

Chaplin made Hilter funny in ways well over Mel's ability - almost 30 years before the original 'Producers' film was released. Groucho was making Hitler funny in 1933's Duck Soup, just as Hitler was coming into power (Harpo had just visited Germany before the film was shot, and was already concerned by Hitler’s treatment of the Jews). Moe, Larry, & Curly skewered Hitler on a couple of occasions in the 30s. Radio stars at the time made Hitler funny failry quickly, also. In any event, Mel certainly contributes to making Hitler into a funny character, but he is very late to the ball, and at best ranks behind Chaplin on this mission (and I also think behind the Marx Brothers and the Stooges). He isn't nearly as influential in his mission as some other hollywood greats.

But Brooks caught lightning in a bottle with his original Producers, as well as with the Broadway version of the movie. Though I had heard the new movie version of the musical was to star Lane and Broderick. If it is now to feature Lovits (instead of presumably Lane), that's a huge step down and not a good sign.

Did you know that Hitler had a son? With a French woman during WW I. The family lives still (of course they're really NOT Hitler's family in any sense other than the biological one - Hitler had no contact with his son, and the latter only found this out after WW II when his mother, on her deathbed, revealed it to him, ruining his life. (Wasn't THAT precious??)
