ALISO VIEJO, Calif. (AP) - City officials were so concerned about the potentially dangerous properties of dihydrogen monoxide that they considered banning foam cups after they learned the chemical was used in their production.

Then they learned that dihydrogen monoxide - H2O for short - is the scientific term for water.

When I was a Safety LPO in the Navy, I came across a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for water.

Ever seen the one for sand? That's right, the stuff they let kids play in can cause cancer.

I wonder if I could get Aliso Viejo to ban sand? This could be fun! :)

Yep!

I also saw them for maple syrup, chocolate, sugar (wear respirator when handling!) and salt.

But is it available in powdered form?

Please consult the MSDS for snow.

"an odorless, tasteless chemical"

If you've ever been without DHMO for an extended time, say a day or two, you can smell it and your nose will lead you to it and it taste wonderful.

My daughter is a junior in hs and is taking speech. She recently gave a speech on the insidious properties of dihydrogen monoxide!

I thought it was a cute speech but I guess some elected officials need to take a refresher course in chemistry!!

Isn't it true that DHMO can be highly addictive, to the point where withdrawal is fatal?

I heard somewhere that at least 90% of the population can't survive without it anymore.

I suggest the level of competence in things technical equivalent to a high school graduate in 1955.

What? You're going to require a Doctor of Education degree?

What A Hoot that would be. ROFL
We should contact the guys at DHMO and ask them to do one about evil silicon!
What with the job they've done with DHMO, a website about the evils of sand should have some people wanting to ban beaches, etc.
LOL

dihydrogen monoxide Is NOT water!
The chemical formula for water is HOH or H OH
That is a Hydrogen atom ( H ) attached to a Hydroxide radical ( OH ) OR
Hydrogen Hydroxide.. The right chemical name for water.
H2O is the simplified or imperial formula ( 2 hydrogen 1 oxygen atoms )

The Jokes on both of them!

In many forms of cruel animal research.

It would be just hilarious if PETA got ahold of this and tried to get a law banning the use of water in animal research!

The IUPAC name for water is oxidane. That might work on those who have heard of DHMO already.
