W.W.J.K.: WHO WOULD JESUS KILL?
William Safire, The New York Times' in-house "conservative" -- who endorsed Bill Clinton in 1992, like so many conservatives -- was sure Mel Gibson's movie "The Passion of the Christ" would incite anti-Semitic violence. Thus far, the pogroms have failed to materialize. With all the subtlety of a Mack truck, Safire called Gibson's movie a version of "the medieval 'passion play,' preserved in pre-Hitler Germany at Oberammergau, a source of the hatred of all Jews as 'Christ killers.'" (Certainly every Aryan Nation skinhead murderer I've ever met was also a devoted theater buff and "passion play" aficionado.)
The "passion play" has been put on in Germany since at least 1633. I guess 1633 would be "pre-Hitler." In addition, Moses walked the Earth "pre-Hitler." The wheel was invented "pre-Hitler." People ate soup "pre-Hitler." Referring to the passion play as "pre-Hitler" is a slightly fancier version of every adolescent's favorite argument: You're like Hitler!
Despite repeated suggestions from liberals -- including the in-house "conservative" and Clinton-supporter at the Times -- Hitler is not what happens when you gin up Christians. Like Timothy McVeigh, the Columbine killers and the editorial board of The New York Times, Hitler detested Christians.
Indeed, Hitler denounced Christianity as an "invention of the Jew" and vowed that the "organized lie (of Christianity) must be smashed" so that the state would "remain the absolute master." Interestingly, this was the approach of all the great mass murderers of the last century -- all of whom were atheists: Hitler, Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot.
In the United States, more than 30 million babies have been killed by abortion since Roe v. Wade, vs. seven abortion providers killed. Yeah -- keep your eye on those Christians!
But according to liberals, it's Christianity that causes murder. (And don't get them started on Zionism.) Like their Muslim friends still harping about the Crusades, liberals won't "move on" from the Spanish Inquisition. In the entire 350 years of the Spanish Inquisition, about 30,000 people were killed. That's an average of less than 100 a year. Stalin knocked off that many kulaks before breakfast.
But Safire argues that viewers of "The Passion" will see the Jewish mob and think: "Who was responsible for this cruel humiliation? What villain deserves to be punished?"
Let's see: It was a Roman who ordered Christ's execution, and Romans who did all the flaying, taunting and crucifying. Perhaps Safire is indulging in his own negative stereotyping about Jews by assuming they simply viewed Romans as "the help."
But again I ask: Does anyone at the Times have the vaguest notion what Christianity is? (Besides people who go around putting up nativity scenes that have to be taken down by court order?) The religion that toppled the Roman Empire -- anyone?
Jesus' suffering and death is not a Hatfields-and-McCoys story demanding retaliation. The gist of the religion that transformed the world is: God's only son came to Earth to take the punishment we deserved.
If the Jews had somehow managed to block Jesus' crucifixion and He had died in old age of natural causes, there would be no salvation through Christ and no Christianity. Whatever possible responses there may be to that story, this is not one of them: Damn those Jews for being a part of God's plan to save my eternal soul!
Gibson didn't insert Jews into the story for some Machiavellian, racist reason. Christ was a Jew crucified by Romans at the request of other Jews in Jerusalem. I suppose if Gibson had moved the story to suburban Cleveland and portrayed Republican logging executives crucifying Christ, the left would calm down. But it simply didn't happen that way.
Of course, the original text is no excuse in Hollywood. The villains of Tom Clancy's book "The Sum of All Fears" were recently transformed from Muslim terrorists to neo-Nazis for the movie version. You wouldn't want to upset the little darlings. They might do something rash like slaughter 3,000 innocent American civilians in a single day. The only religion that can be constantly defamed and insulted is the one liberals pretend to be terrified of.

They might do something rash like slaughter 3,000 innocent American civilians in a single day. Not to mention what they did to a couple hundred Spanish civilians today.

Maybe "Conservative" William Safire will mention that the Nazi version of the Bible eliminated all Jews. That included Moses, David and Jesus who all became Arian. Course that wouldn't paint all Christians as Nazis as Safire and most Liberals believe.

"Not to mention what they did to a couple hundred Spanish civilians today." Exactly. Rush was talking about Ann today on his radio. I love that lady. Her straight talk drives liberals bankers. She sayis as it is.

I have seen this movie more than once. I have been on threads telling people it is not anti semitic and defending it aginst people like Safire, Krauthhammer, James Carrol, Hitchens . . . on and on. Not anymore. I refuse to "debate".
Gibson has portrayed The Passion from the Gospels almost to the letter. The "argument" of these folks denouncing it as "anti semitic" is essentially that Christianity itself is "anti semitic". The Passion is the central event of Christian faith. To see the ignorance, arrogance, and complete self absorbtion of some of this movie's critics has been highly insulting to me and to I suspect many others.
I fell no need to defend the central defining moment of my faith against any charge. It is an accurate retelling of The Passion of The Christ. Take it or leave it.

Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ is a movie to move hearts and souls. If they only will allow too be that way. This thread is about Spain terrible 11 terrorist attacks. I think would be nice if we keep that way out of respect to other freepers. However I will answer your post. Those who did this, Heaven will answer with full force justice and no mercy. Keep in your heart those who past away. As Jesus died on a Cross so many have perished today and we need to keep them in our prayers and hearts. Evil is finished it will not succeed for God is more powerful then evil. In do time we will understand that. Pray and keep them in prayer as Jesus said on a Holy Cross Father forgive them for they know what they are doing"

W.W.J.K.?
Trick question.
It's not a "would."
It's a "will"
He will kill all opposed to him.

Sorry- But I don't think this article has anything to do with the terrbile events in Spain. It is Coulter slamming Safire over his comments on the Passion.

But Safire argues that viewers of "The Passion" will see the Jewish mob and think: "Who was responsible for this cruel humiliation? What villain deserves to be punished?" Coulter, smart girl, puts her finger on something here. Safire's first reaction to seeing the Passion is vengence. He wants someone punished (and he thinks Christians will too). Safire must be a smart man or he wouldn't be where he is today, but he's still too blind to his own heart to realize he's the one filled with hate, not as he supposes, everyone else.

and the editorial board of The New York Times THAT GOTTA HURT THE GRAY LADY!
To: Burkeman1
I wonder why Ann pulled her punches with Krauthammer--but she may be as exhausted as everyone else.
The whole ordeal sure opened my eyes--and these gasbags don't have the tenure they think they do. It's the last time I'll take them seriously. I know, now, what they really think of the American Christian.

Gray Lady better get some pills. This liberal activism is like poison in a mind of young once. I believe this people think this is still 1960's. They just understand we are at war for our survival. This is not a game. Look what happen in Spain today

They just understand = They just don't understand

While I'm not happy with the interpretation from some of these conservatives, I must say that I've noticed that "The Passion" has obviously become a hot topic even among those who normally agree with each other. And while civil debate is welcome, I do believe that some liberals have intentionally ratcheted up the heated rhetoric in order to provoke a more unreasonable response from those on the Christian right.
With Bush's recent success at appealing to those within the Jewish community, I believe that "some" people are using this movie to exploit age-old prejudices and to drive a wedge between Jews and Christians (especially consevatives) who have found some common ground in recent years.
Unfortunately, because of these deep rooted beliefs, some of this rhetoric is working as each side is digging in to defend its position. Just remember that there are those baiters out there who are hoping for this, so they can go back to portraying the Republican Party as the party of intolerant Christians...and scare away any potential Jewish support.

I don't know what they think of the American Christian but they show an astounding ignorance about Christianity istelf. I am not talking about just the Jewish critics. One of the worst was from James Caroll from the Boston Globe. He is a former priest who left the priesthood and got married to a former Nun and is a total radical. He seems to think that only scholars like himself can really know what the Gospels mean and that any retelling of the Passion is ipso facto "anti semitic". You see- regular people like you and me are going to run out into the street and kill Jews after seeing this film or even reading the bible without people like Carrol telling us what it means (and what it means to him just happens to match every one of his left wing ideological beliefs.)
But you are right- this whole experience really has been any eye opener for me.
To: Mamzelle
And as a post script to my last post, I think the Jewish critics of this film are just as ignorant on Jewish theology as well. Some of the biggest defenders and even supporters of this film have been from traditional religous and Orthodox Jews.
To: Burkeman1
I have been on threads telling people it is not anti semitic and defending it Have you seen this thread? Some self-identified Jewish people speak in favor of the movie.
