Accused Spy Is Cousin of Bush Staffer

By MATTHEW DALY
ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) -

The woman charged with working for the Iraqi spy agency is a distant cousin of President Bush's chief of staff, Andrew Card, and has held a variety of jobs in journalism and on Capitol Hill.

Susan Lindauer, 41, worked in the press offices of four Democratic members of Congress. She also worked for Fortune magazine, U.S. News & World Report, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and Fox News.

Her father, John Lindauer, was the Republican nominee for governor in Alaska in 1998. His campaign unraveled because of charges of campaign finance violations to which he pleaded no contest.

Susan Lindauer is a 1985 Smith College graduate who describes herself as an anti-war activist.

Gary Gambill, editor of the Middle East Intelligence Bulletin, an online publication dealing with Arab politics, said Lindauer sent him a copy of her 1998 deposition in litigation related to the December 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.

In the deposition, she said Libyan officials had been wrongly accused of orchestrating the bombing and that Libya was entitled to "financial compensation for the economic harassment her people have endured because of these blatantly false accusations."

He said her arrest "raises questions about the validity of her deposition and its apparent attempt to exonerate Libya."

Lindauer started her congressional career in 1993 when she took a job with Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore. The next year she went to work for a second Oregon Democrat in the House - Ron Wyden. Two years later she joined the staff of Sen. Carol Moseley Braun, D-Ill.

After a brief stint at Fox News, she worked for Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., for a few months in 2002.

Lofgren said in a statement she was shocked by the arrest.

"To my knowledge, this former employee had no access to sensitive information," she said. "Obviously, I had no reason to think that she was involved in this alleged activity. I have had no further contact with her since she left my employ."

DeFazio said he has not spoken to Lindauer in more than 10 years. "We didn't part on the best of terms," he said.

Lindauer's neighbors in Takoma Park, Md., recalled her as friendly. Joao Luiz Vieire de Castro, 39, described Lindauer as "a regular American who walks her dog in the mornings and the afternoon."

Oh, I agree 1000%. That is my point. But, then again, we're not close to Dubya. The "relationship" will get a WHOLE LOT more airplay than the employment with the Democrats. Mark my words.

Lindauer made contact with Mr. Card. & he gave a letter & info to the FBI. Lindauer picked the wrong relative to have a "reunion" with.

There's the next Rat take on it, then, if they can't smear the White House with consorting with spies. They'll portray her as an innocent "whistleblower" caught up by one of Ashcroft's too-numerous-to-count abuses of the Patriot Act.

I was listening to Rusty Humphry and heard him say Susan Lindauer has already posted $500,000 bail she didn't even spend one day in custody.

I don't know of anyone who gets a court time that fast.

"This woman is a dyed in the wool Democrat, but the AP chooses to ties Bush to her because she is a DISTANT cousin of one of his employees."

===

Why don't I see in the title, "A Democrat Congressional Staffer" arrested for spying for Saddam's government??? THAT would be more to the point.

"Lindauer started her congressional career in 1993 when she took a job with Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore. The next year she went to work for a second Oregon Democrat in the House - Ron Wyden. Two years later she joined the staff of Sen. Carol Moseley Braun, D-Ill.

And that is important for what reason?

Does the Associated Press really believe that Alger Hiss, John Walker, Aldrich Ames or the Rosenbergs did not walk their dogs?

In the Seattle TV news tonight, they highlighted the point that she had links to BOTH Republicans and Rats.

As others have noted, you can't pick your relatives:

Genealogy buffs claim political rivals are linked
AP file / Getty Images file
A family tree analysis indicates that President Bush, at left, and his front-running Democratic challenger, John Kerry, are 16th cousins, three times removed. Such links aren't all that unusual, genealogy buffs say.

Funny a distant cousin of an employee. Yet she has direct ties to many democrats. Guess what title the AP decided to go with.

FWIW, from this link:

MAY 2000

SUNDAY HERALD, SCOTLAND: A FORMER CIA agent who claims Libya is not responsible for the Lockerbie bombing is being gagged by the US government under state secrecy laws and faces 10 years in prison if he reveals any information about the terrorist attack. United Nations diplomats are outraged that the US government is apparently suppressing a potential key trial witness. Diplomats are now demanding that the CIA agent, Dr. Richard Fuisz, be released from the gagging order. Fuisz, a multi-millionaire businessman and pharmaceutical researcher, was, according to US intelligence sources, the CIA's key operative in the Syrian capital Damascus during the 1980s where he also had business interests. One month before a court order was served on him by the US government gagging him from speaking on the grounds of national security, he spoke to US congressional aide Susan Lindauer, telling her he knew the identities of the Lockerbie bombers and claiming they were not Libyan. Lindauer, shocked by Fuisz's claims, immediately compiled notes on the meeting which formed the basis of a later sworn affidavit detailing Fuisz's claims. One month after their conversation, in October 1994, a court in Washington DC issued an order barring him from revealing any information on the grounds of "military and state secrets privilege".

When contacted by the Sunday Herald ht, Fuisz said when asked if he was a CIA agent in Syria in the 1980s: "That is not an issue I can confirm or deny. I am not allowed to speak about these issues. In fact, I can't even explain to you why I can't speak about these issues."

. . . Fuisz's statements to Lindauer support the claims of the two Libyan accused who are to incriminate a number of terrorist organizations, including the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, which had strong links to Syria and Iran.

SUNDAY HERALD, SCOTLAND: THE two Libyans accused of downing Pan Am 103 could not have planted the bomb, according to a devastating scientific report submitted by one of the Crown's star witnesses. The report threw the prosecution case into disarray and forced the adjournment of the Lockerbie trial on Thursday for 12 days. The report concludes that the Semtex bomb was attached to the inside of the aircraft in the cargo hold and was not concealed, as the prosecution case alleges, within a cassette player packed into a suitcase which was stored within a luggage container in the cargo hold . . . Senior Crown Office sources have admitted to the Sunday Herald that the report submitted to the Lord Advocate, Colin Boyd, just days before the trial started provided such startling new evidence that the prosecution had no alternative but to seek an adjournment to consider the future of the trial. In a stunning own goal for the prosecution, Edwin Bollier, who is listed as prosecution witness number 548, delivered a detailed analysis of the explosion to the Lord Advocate, claiming the Crown's version of the bombing was scientifically impossible.

AP is starting to sound like a redneck family reunion.

'The spy was a Bush staffer's ex-girlfriend's, mother's, brother's, half-uncle's, cousin's, nephew's, grandson's, great-uncle's, aunt's, cousin three times removed.'

Isn't that just like the RAT infested press....take a known democRAT operative and try to link her to the Bush family. Okay...so what? You can tell more about a person by who they associate with than by who they're related to.
