Transcript of HM King Juan Carlos' address to the Spanish nation
El PaĆs (Madrid, Spain) ^ | March 11, 2004 | HM King Juan Carlos I

Posted on 03/11/2004 2:51:04 PM PST by El Conservador

The terrorist savagery has sunk Spain in the deepest pain, disgustment and indignation

Men, women and children, free citizens of all ages and occupations, even from other countries, who were in their were in their way to their destinations, schools and workplaces, have found themselves brutally confronted with death and suffering

A nightmarish scenario has took all Spaniard homes to show the most cruel and murderous face of terrorism.

In these tragic moments, I want to extend the victims' families my deepest affection and my family's. I'd like to fuse with all of you in a hug full of comforting and sadness.

We'll always be with you, with all of those who suffer the consequences of a macabre madness with no possible justification. These repugnant attacks only deserve the most energic and absolute condemniation.

I also address the injured and their families, to express them our warmth, our closeness and our desire of a speedy recovery.

Your King suffers with all of you, shares your indignation and is confident in the strength and effectiveness of the rule of law so such vile and coward murderers can be caught in the hands of justice and serve in prison all punishments the courts may sentence them to. They'll answer for the crimes in an unavoidable way.

The public services and the citizens of Madrid, always generous, have grown in the tragedy to show their solidary selflessness, their effort and collaboration.

The security forced don't stop in their task defending our liberties.

The good-hearted Spain has been moved once again, offering her material aid and moral support.

To all, our deepest gratitude.

Despair is not made for Spaniards.

We're a great country, which has shown with flying colors her capacity to overcome challenges and difficulties. A country that knows well that, in the face of nonsense and savagery, there's room only for unity, resolve and serenity.

Unity, resolve and serenity in the fight against terrorism, with all the instruments that the rule of law gives us, redoubling our joint efforts to finish this plague, counting on police action, the labor of justice and international cooperation.

Unity, resolve and serenity above the legitimate differences in opinion, around the firmest will of peaceful and democratic togetherness, guaranteed by our Constitution, sovereign expression of the Spaniard people.

In these hours of immense pain, we Spaniards are called, more than evere, to reaffirm our determination to finish the terrorist violence.

Let there be no doubt about it. Terrorism will never achieve its objectives.

It won't subdue our faith in democracy, nor our trust in the future of Spain

"First time he had addressed the Spaniard nation apart from his traditional Christmas speech in 23 years."

The last time was after the Hall of Deputies got shot up, I believe. That's when Spain came together really as a democracy.

That's interesting, I have an interest in European royals and was unaware he doesn't address the nation other than at Christmas.

Thanks for this moving post.
