DENVER (News 4) Gov. Bill Owens will not running for U.S. Senate, News 4 reports.
News 4 has confirmed that Owens will make the announcement at 1 p.m. Watch his announcement live on the home page of news4colorado.com at that time.
Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, 70, said last week that he would not seek re-election to a third term in a surprise announcement that came after two hospital visits for stress-related heartburn.
Owens won re-election in 2002 with 65 percent of the vote and has been mentioned as a possible cabinet member in a second Bush administration and even as a vice presidential candidate.
GOP Congressman Scott McInnis, long interested in the Senate, said that if he decides to run, he won't be deterred no matter who is in the race.
Other potential Republican candidates include Rep. Tom Tancredo, Rep. Bob Beauprez and Rep. Marilyn Musgrave.
Democratic Congressman Mark Udall is reconsidering an earlier decision not to run.
Democratic Congresswoman Diana DeGette is also thinking about seeking the Senate seat. Spokesman Josh Freed said she will make a decision soon.
Attorney General Ken Salazar, also a Democrat, told The Pueblo Chieftain last week that he is contemplating a Senate bid.

Looks like we're going to have a free for all in Colorado. We have some good people who will probably run but it won't be as easy as it would have been with Owens.

We'll have to wait for announcements but I do think Tancredo will try it.

It will be Trancredo vs. Udall and Tancredo will win.

Tancredo is a fraud. Nice FU to America. Tancredo is my 2nd choice now but he is definitely not a fraud. Why do you think that he is?

I think McInnis will win it.

I think that Scott McInnis, who is retiring as a western slope representative, might actually have a better chance of winning statewide than Tancredo.
However, between the two of them, I would happily support which ever one is the strongest candidate.
They are both good men.

TOM T will never win a STATE wide race..if he is the GOP nominee, then say hello to a RAT senator from CO.

Good. Owens is in better shape for an '08 Presidential run as a governor than a senator. Tancredo or McInnis. I hope ReGrete runs, she is a huge looser state wide.

This is what I'm afraid of too. I think the campaign will simply be too polarizing if Tancredo is the candidate.
People here will blame it on Karl Rove of course but I think we will see the grim facts in the first statewide polling on the primary candidates.

Flip flopped on gun control to get elected.
Went after an honor roll student but not the illegals that put in his home stereo.
Played Klinger to get out of the service.

He might be a better Bob Smith as far as getting out the vote for a Senate run. Bob lost because Republicans got tired of his antics. I bet Tom could raise a lot of money for a Senate race from all over the country. He could maybe even get volunteers from out of state, too. I wouldn't discount him so quickly.

If Tancredo ends up being the GOP nominee, the Democrat will win.
