Solo Freep Report of Kerry Victory Celebration Tonight in D.C. 3/02/04
Tuesday, March 2, 2004 | Kristinn

Senator John Kerry ('Rat-MA) held his Super Tuesday victory celebration tonight in Washington, D.C. I was watching at home on TV as the cable networks waited on Kerry to make his speech. I couldn't make out where the party was being held, but after a while I heard C-SPAN mention it was at the Old Post Office Pavillion in downtown.

(Expletive deleted) I cried out. That's just around the corner from me. So I got myself together and whipped out posterboard and marker. I was ready to leave just as Kerry was finishing his speech.

I walked over to the Old Post Office Pavillion, arriving in five minutes just as the crowd was letting out. I unfurled my sign and walked cautiously through the crowd. Almost all of them were carrying Kerry for president signs; some wore t-shirts with union names on them; none of them would comment on my sign's messages.

After walking the length of the block to check the lay of the land, I settled on a spot at the front of the building but close to the street so I didn't obstruct the sidewalk. There were TV satellite and microwave trucks lining the street. Buses and limos were there too. Anyone passing by could tell this was a major event.

So I stood with my sign, not saying anything, just watching how the Kerry supporters reacted and waiting for things to get ugly. But they never did.

I could see them reading the sign and I was puzzled by the lack of response. I thought, "Maybe they don't get it." No, someone would ask, but they didn't. Then I thought, "Maybe they think I'm a Kerry supporter." No, they would have been smiling and calling out words of good cheer to me.

Then I realized. They get it. And they were scared to death to confront me about it. What did the sign say?

It said: NORTH VIETNAM VETERANS FOR KERRY.

Only one Kerry supporter asked me about the sign, kind of. He asked if I served in Vietnam. I told him no, but my father and brother did. He asked about my dad and I gave him a brief synopsis of his time there. He then asked what my dad thought of the current situation. I told him that at the time of his death last year, he was planning on going to Iraq to help our effort there. The man slinked away and didn't say anything else to me.

For laughs, and to reinforce the point, I had written another message on the back of the sign: SANDINISTAS FOR KERRY. That brought a few chuckles, but again no comments.

The news media let me know they got the signs. A few camera guys carrying their equipment out broke into knowing laughter at the North Vietnam sign. One still photographer took pictures of both sides of the sign.

An Asian TV crew man asked me about the North Vietnam sign. I told him about the South Vietnamese protesting Kerry in New York last Saturday. He understood why.

I was really surprised at the reaction tonight from the Kerry supporters. I expected to get flipped off and cursed at. Instead, I learned what they know to be Kerry's Achilles' heel.

Great sign, kristinn.

Just goes to show that they DO know what his Achilles heel is.
It's my belief that it is also what will cost him the white house.

Okay....I scanned the thread, and evidently DU believes that CNN slants with the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy!

And no, I am not kidding.

I don't know what the Kerry people have against CNN. I did see some folks with anti-CNN buttons outside. I also think I saw the banner you saw on TV. Some folks were posing for still pictures with a CNN banner down the block from me, but I couldn't make out the whole banner. This explains it to me now.
