Effective Technology Could Help Prevent Smoking Ban

An air filtration system, new to the UK could help to avoid a smoking ban in pubs, restaurants and other public places in the UK, claims Dianne White MD of Essa air cleaners, which claim to be so effective that the need for smoking and no-smoking areas in pubs and restaurants could be eradicated, solving a number of issues highlighted in the current smoking in public places debate.

Already a number of leisure industry heavyweights have installed these air filtration units in their outlets nationwide. A spokesman for Thwaites Inns, the trading arm of Daniel Thwaites Brewery running 70 managed houses said, "We recognise that we have a duty of care to both our employees and customers and we take a proactive approach to this issue.

Essa air filters are proven to eliminate 99.9% of all smoke particles from the air, giving us peace of mind that our customers can relax in an unpolluted environment." That is why Essa were chosen to install their units into the 42 public houses, which were fully ventilated before but had no existing air filtration system or only had obsolete electrostatic units."

Essa air filtration units were the brainchild of Robert Gibbs who developed the first ever polarising electronic filters during his time at the forefront of research and development into how Legionnaires disease was transmitted.

A technological advancement from conventional HEPA or Electrostatic filters which are found in most air cleaners, Essa air cleaners attract airborne particles and polarise them, leaving nothing to block the filter or pollute the air which means the longer the filter runs the more effective it becomes. The filters also remove chemical pollutants and other particles that the eye cannot see by virtue of the polarisation of the particles.

As the ban on smoking debate continues Dianne White MD of Essa EU believes that a total smoking ban in the UK would be extremely damaging for the leisure industry and would lead to the loss of thousands of jobs. Dianne believes that the leisure industry should remain self-regulatory. However, she has accused the leisure and hospitality trade of being "too passive" on this issue and believes that the time has come for them to find their voice.

"The hospitality and leisure industry have sat back for far too long and let anti-smoking organizations lead the debate. The public has a very one-sided view on this subject thanks to the hospitality trades negligence on tackling this issue head on."

Dianne calls for owners of businesses in the hospitality sector to take more responsibility for their customers and employees health and she believes that it is the duty of the leisure industry to seize the initiative and to lobby the Government to impose stricter rules on adequate air cleaning equipment.

They know the small businesses and the mom and pop joints won't be able to withstand the loss of business for long and they will finally be the only "choice" in town.

That makes me sick. :(

Like your tagline. I always heard the former part of the phrase, but never the latter...until I read "From a Buick 8".

Really? From a Buick 8?? I never knew where it originated.

From Saugus to Danvers, the ninnynannies have won. Revere, Lynn, Nahant and Chelsea and Malden(not sure) are without bans.

The Golden Banana has closed, and Peabody's gone nonsmoking too, heck, they didn't give permission to Hooters to open.

The Palace has closed, along with many joints in the Saugus area.

I don't disagree with you.

Not that long ago I sat down and figured out how long ago it was that I got involved in this and was totally shocked to realize it has been closer to 20 than 15 years.

Quite right.

New Zealand passed laws last year banning smoking in clubs and pubs. Haven't come into effect yet, so it'll be interesting. One thing that nearly derailed their plans and enraged the anti-smoking Prime Minister personally was the release by NIWA (National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research) showing that modern extraction machinery filtered out 99% plus of harmful chemicals. Since they're a respected neutral body run by the governemnt, they got slapped down immediately, the report vanished and she bulldozed her scheme through.

Oh yes, another ...amusing...revelation was that her Labour govt paid anti-smoking lobbyists to lobby for the bill, even requiring them in writing to guarantee they'd pressure undecided or neutral MPs. Nice to see your tax monies used in an unbiased fashion, eh?

It makes me sick as well.

The supposed Delaware Restaurant Association has about 200 members that have something like 500 restaurants amongst them - but there are close to 2,000 in the state. And most of them are franchise owners or holders.

That small group was able to override the overwhelming vocal opposition from non-members to the ban. Several owners that I personally know cancelled their memberships the day after the Association accepted the ban.

due to some of the anti-smoker trolls we have encountered of late, I will not publicly post names of establishments. I'm sure you understand.

Sigh.

This knee-jerk tacit agreement with the health "argument" is getting tiresome.

The filters sound like the perfect compromise solution; therefore, the idea is probably doomed.

From a Buick 8 used it recently but it goes back a long way in English culture...my grandfather used to use it cheerfully and he was born before 1900.

It's par for the course with our very agenda-driven government, I'm afraid. Ah well, I'll enjoy my tobacco indoors while I yet can...

What we really need are standards for indoor air quality that include tobacco smoke, and then places could be tested and either pass or fail, and it'd be up to them to improve the quality if they failed.

From what I understand, all the chemicals in exhaled tobacco smoke have had acceptable levels set for them by the EPA and tobacco smoke is far below these levels. This is the reason the EPA refuses to set an acceptable level for tobacco smoke and the reason why so many SHS studies have been supressed.

Mayor Bloomberg won't care -- he doesn't mind smoking if it's done by his rich buddies, but he hates the idea of letting the rabble do it.

I used to go to Lennie's On The Turnpike for jazz and blues and the old Wagon Wheels where "Mr. Green" used to run his shylock biz.

Unfortunately, you're right - it is par for the course.

I enjoy my tobacco indoors because I no longer lives in a state that considers private property to be public property ;)

Wishfull thinking but it will never happen. I have been in bars with great air ventilation systems and segregated sections for smokers but it is not enough for the nazi's. It has already been proven on this site by the arguments posted by the nazi's that cooperation, consideration and courtesy are no longer in their vocabulary. Their intent is to prevent you, I and all the rest of us individuals who partake in the perfectly legal activity of smoking, from entering any establishment which they may choose to enter and call their temporary home.........

There is absolutely nothing that will appease these nazi's!!!

sorry for the delay in responding - I've had 2 20-quart stock pots going on the stove and they have needed tending....I've also had to start dinner!!!!

The little trolls would be funny - if only they weren't the ones getting the press time.

I can't believe that I posted a picture of a bunch of FReepers having an enjoyable evening together and have been blasted for it all over the internet. My only regret is that I have subjected others to the stalkers that have a problem with me.
