Leave up to the Gay's to create this fiasco within their own party. Let's see what Kerry & Dean do now. Maybe Ralph will support Gay Marriage and they'll all vote for him.

This is yet another frivilous proposed amendment, just like the proposed flag burning amendment, the proposed balanced budget amendment... Just what we need. :(

Thanks for the ping!
Without having had time to read all the posts, I'm happy to see the President take this stand. This showdown has been on the horizon for a very long time. This insidious movement is not about defining marriage, it is a set up for lawsuits. The first church or temple that declines to perform these "marriage" ceremonies will be sued for discrimination and lose with activist judges.
The religious institution loses its tax exemption, the "injured parties" collect and the secular society, that is not based on any moral foundation or sense of responsibility is codified.

Bush needs some gay people standing next to him on this issue because you know what the left is going to say. "Bush is dividing America..."
Bush should enlist the help of people like Al Rantel and Tammy Bruce. Both gay, both articulate and both against gay marriages.

Ha-Ha! The Democrats have a real problem is seems. Who are they going to dump on?
Homosexuals or Blue-Collar Union Christian Families?

Beware, beware, beware of a constitutional amendment. We don't want one. President Bush should have done his homework.......or he's being naive or ill-advised.
The liberals and leftists will try to take over and control the amendment process and it can be a total disaster for us. Remember, they can file to amend the constitution with a variety of leftist amendments just as well as our side can file with just one, and at the same time, also. All kinds of mischief can take place. We can't take this chance.
Gay marriage MUST be handled at the state legislature level!

"Don't pay attention to illegal immigration. Don't pay attention to all of our jobs going overseas. Look over here! Ain't I wonderful over here? Don't look over there." If Bush would only CLOSE our borders and put tariffs on American companies using foreign slave workers but selling their slave goods here in America, I would say he was as great as Reagan.
But he won't and he ain't.

Just when you wonder if he's still capable of true leadership any longer, Bush does the courageous, right thing.
Right on!

I support Bush on what marriage should be defined as being, however, I do not know if a federal level amend. is the right way to go.

The President is going to regret this. He and his advisors all are
very well aware that a constitutional amendment will never get off the ground, let alone pass into law.
He made this speech to fire up his base, many of whom post here at FR. But his action also has the highly unfortunate effect of moving this exasperating and annoying, and, yes, minor issue onto center stage in the coming election debates. It doesn't belong there! We have more important things to worry about.

I think this will be going to the Supreme Court before it reaches the Constitutional Amendment stage, and then the Amendment should not be ratified; because ...
The institution of marriage is legally a secular matter, and religious customs should not conflict with individual freedom in a free, secular, and multicultural nation.
