Report: Military contractor bringing more jobs to North Texas
Associated Press
DALLAS - A military and aerospace contractor, Vought Aircraft Industries Inc., reportedly plans a consolidation of its operations that could bring 3,000 jobs to North Texas.
Officials close to the company, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Dallas Morning News in Tuesday's editions the move would almost double Vought's workforce in the metropolitan area for new contracts the manufacturer hopes to obtain.
An announcement of Dallas-based Vought's plans was scheduled Thursday. Gov. Rick Perry was scheduled to speak at the event and invitations have already been sent out to local dignitaries.
U.S. Rep. Martin Frost, who helped mediate a dispute over structural problems at a company's plant several years ago, said the plan is great news for Texas.
"It means new jobs and a stronger economy," said Frost, D-Arlington. "I was proud to win the agreement in 2000 from the Department of Defense to provide over $40 million to modernize the plant, and I am pleased that Vought has now decided to expand their workforce in the Grand Prairie plant."
Vought's local workers make parts for commercial and military aircraft. The company has two facilities that straddle the border between Dallas and Grand Prairie.
Company officials plan to move some panel work on the Boeing 747 from its plant in Hawthorne, Calif. The newspaper said the privately held firm also hoped to close its Nashville-area facility, with about 1,100 workers who produce more than 10,000 wings and tail sections for a variety of prime aircraft contractors.
Vought, founded in 1917 by Wright Brothers' chief engineer Chance Milton Vought, has also teamed with Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. in hopes of winning the contract to build the new Marine One presidential helicopter.

Bad news for Hawthorne and Nashville.
"Consolidations" usually result in greater production efficiency,
but it also usually means a net loss of jobs for the nation.
It's no wonder that the numbers involved in the closures are sketchy at best.
I bet the numbers promised for Texas are similarly exagerated for political effect.
