February 24, 2004 -- WASHINGTON - The Pentagon has dispatched the elite commando force that hunted down Saddam Hussein to Afghanistan for a new operation aimed at getting Osama bin Laden, officials said yesterday. Military sources confirmed that members of the shadowy Task Force 121, the unit that conducted the high-tech search for Saddam and his henchmen, have recently begun operating in the remote mountainous region along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border where bin Laden and key al Qaeda and Taliban fugitives are believed to be hiding. The Task Force is made up of highly trained Delta and SEAL commandos, as well as CIA paramilitary operators. It operates outside normal military channels.

Tribesmen to Hunt Fugitives in Pakistan

WANA, Pakistan - Hundreds of armed tribesmen will begin hunting for seven men accused of sheltering Taliban and al-Qaida fugitives in a tribal region along the Afghan border, an official said Wednesday.

Pakistani officials met Tuesday with tribal elders in South Waziristan and warned them of "very bad consequences" if they failed to capture and turn over the seven wanted tribesmen, said Rehmatullah Wazir, an administration official in Wana, the main town in the remote region in northwestern Pakistan.

The tactic of forcing tribesmen to hunt down wanted members dates to British colonial rule.

On Wednesday, the elders said they had made arrangements for the search to begin Thursday and added that it will involve about 600 armed men.

"We will begin action against the people wanted by the government so that they surrender otherwise their homes will be demolished," said Ba Khan, one of the elders.

Neither officials nor tribal elders identified the seven men, who are believed to be hiding in Azam Warsak, 10 miles west of Wana.

South Waziristan is believed to be a hiding place for al-Qaida and Taliban suspects, possibly Osama bin Laden. The region lies along the porous Afghan border.

Pakistan — a key U.S. ally in the campaign against terrorism — has sent some 70,000 troops to the frontier to try to seal it.

In a recent operation in near Wana, Pakistani troops arrested 25 people. No senior al-Qaida or Taliban figures were reported among them.

That's what I've been wondering, Granny. Could there be a parasitic vent or fissure? Also Wy has many sub-bituminous and lignite coal beds...if they are burning (and those fumes have got to be deadly) couldn't an area leaking such gases kill off wildlife? But then I would expect lots and lots of dead birds and smaller critters.

Scientists are coaxing secrets from an enigmatic and incredibly infectious germ, Francisella tularensis, that sprang from its discovery in California's foothills to become a weapon in the world's largest biological arsenals.

Biologists at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory have decoded the genetic recipe for Francisella tularensis, a bug that has pestered humans long enough to warrant a Biblical caution against eating rabbits: "their flesh shall ye not eat, andtheir carcass shall ye not touch."

Japanese scientists tapped "rabbit fever" in World War II for use as a weapon. A U.S. military scientist traded North America's most virulent strain to Soviet counterparts for a milder version, useful as a vaccine.

The two Cold War adversaries perfected delivery of the virulent form by spray tanks and bomblets, intended for cities. The Soviet Union continued production of vaccine- and antibiotic-resistant strains into the 1990s.


Yet scientists never have understood what makes tularensis such a remarkably effective agent of disease.

It may take a few thousand Bacillus anthracis bacteria to trigger a case of anthrax, but inhaling just 10 tularensis bacteria can result in a lethal case of tularemia, in half the time.

Volcanic gasses collecting in low areas...

Gases are also released from magma that either remains below ground (for example, as an intrusion) or is rising toward the surface. In such cases, gases may escape continuously into the atmosphere from the soil, volcanic vents, fumaroles, and hydrothermal systems.

At high pressures deep beneath the earth's surface, volcanic gases are dissolved in molten rock. But as magma rises toward the surface where the pressure is lower, gases held in the melt begin to form tiny bubbles.

The increasing volume taken up by gas bubbles makes the magma less dense than the surrounding rock, which may allow the magma to continue its upward journey. Closer to the surface, the bubbles increase in number and size so that the gas volume may exceed the melt volume in the magma, creating a magma foam.

The rapidly expanding gas bubbles of the foam can lead to explosive eruptions in which the melt is fragmented into pieces of volcanic rock, known as tephra. If the molten rock is not fragmented by explosive activity, a lava flow will be generated.

The two main gases are carbon dioxide and sulfer dioxide. Now to just see if one causes paralysis.

Trying to make sense of the elk die-off and some rumor about a 6.5 quake in WYO on 2/7/04 that wasn't reported by USGS. It was reputed to be a "mine explosion." Add that to the possibility of Yellowstone's caldera possibly acting up again. Also discussing the Tesla theory that VLF waves cause "scaler waves" which can soften rock and have been being broadcast by the Russian "Woodpecker" at the US since 1976. Mysterious elk deaths continue climb

Personnel have now ruled out calcium deficiency, chronic wasting disease, bacterial and common viral infections, tick paralysis, meningeal and carotid artery worm as causes. Mercury poisoning, selenium toxicity, many of the common plant toxins, a variety of metals and salt, nitrate and sulfate poisoning have also been eliminated.

Another thing officials have dismissed is that someone ran the animals to death. Reed said that theory is pretty much off the table.
