February 24, 2004 -- WASHINGTON - The Pentagon has dispatched the elite commando force that hunted down Saddam Hussein to Afghanistan for a new operation aimed at getting Osama bin Laden, officials said yesterday. Military sources confirmed that members of the shadowy Task Force 121, the unit that conducted the high-tech search for Saddam and his henchmen, have recently begun operating in the remote mountainous region along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border where bin Laden and key al Qaeda and Taliban fugitives are believed to be hiding. The Task Force is made up of highly trained Delta and SEAL commandos, as well as CIA paramilitary operators. It operates outside normal military channels.

Vietnam Veterans Denounce 'Hanoi John'
Hundreds of U.S. Army veterans and Vietnamese escapees demonstrated Saturday outside John Kerry's campaign headquarters in Manhattan to protest his betrayal of them.
"Waving American and South Vietnamese flags and singing the U.S. national anthem, they held up signs saying 'Hanoi John,' and 'Kerry Betrayed Vietnam Vets'," Reuters reported.

Hillary Endorses Kerry on Foreign TV
New York Sen. Hillary Clinton finally made her much-sought-after presidential endorsement on Tuesday for Sen. John Kerry. But she chose to make it in a venue where few if any Americans were watching.
Rather than appear side-by-side with the Democratic presidential front-runner, or ring up Dan Rather, Katie Couric or Larry King with the big news, she chose to deliver a lukewarm statement on, of all places, Japanese TV.

Fallout from the Clinton administration's "Don't ask, Don't tell" policies. Recruiters, never chosen for their adherence to ethics and under tremendous pressure to fill slots, merely applied that credo to the blank where citizenship should be filled in.
Imagine the havoc Kerry could wreak.
Only one Marine of unknown origin? Could be a citizen but doesn't remember (wink to you jarheads out there).

All great questions.

I read the article. Interesting, to say the least.
However, if you recall, Sanchez talked to Bush about the disgruntled illegal aliens in Iraq when Bush was there Thanksgiving. Then, last week, in Louisiana Bush honored a latino (don't know if he was a citizen or not) at the military base.
My guess is that the next thing we hear will be that the illegals have won the war on terror. You know, "A job that Americans won't do."

Update:
Error caused Flash crash: paper
By ELIZABETH BRYANT, United Press International
PARIS, March 3 (UPI) -- Human error and technical problems caused a January charter plane crash off Egypt, a French newspaper reported Wednesday.
The pre-dawn crash of Egypt's Flash Airline near the Sinai tourist resort of Sharm el Sheikh Jan. 3 killed 148 people, most of them French tourists.
French and Egyptian investigators still investigating the incident quickly dismissed chances of a possible terrorist attack.
Now, according to Le Figaro, the probable cause was human error, compounded by technical difficulties.
The newspaper reportedly based its conclusions on conversations recorded by the plane's black boxes, recovered on the Red Sea bed after the crash.
The Flash crew had assumed the automatic pilot was on -- when in fact it was not, Le Figaro said.
Without the automatic pilot, the plane's resulting odd path perplexed the Flash pilot and his copilot -- who apparently never realized the cause.
Louis Arsianian, head of France's airline investigation office, told the newspaper the investigation was ongoing.
SHADOWY GROUP THREATENS TO BOMB FRENCH RAILWAY
March 3 By Gerard Bon
PARIS (Reuters) - A shadowy group is threatening to blow up France's SNCF state railway if it is not paid about $5 million, officials said Wednesday. It has already directed police to a sophisticated time bomb under tracks near Limoges, in southwestern France on the line between Paris and Toulouse, to prove its technical prowess, they said.
The group, which calls itself AZF after a chemical factory in southwestern France that exploded in 2001, claims to have hidden 10 other bombs around the network, officials said.

Thanks for the update. I'd love to know from a pilot if they typically engage the autopilot shortly after take-off at 5000 ft??
The things that still bother me about this crash are the facts that it took 32 seconds from 5000 feet in a "nosedive" for the plane to crash.
No distress call from pilots.
Everything "calm" on the flight voice recorder.

What a convoluted story. (scratching my head!)

I *know* you all remember this incident. You're not going to believe what happened in court!
Judge: Pilot not too drunk to fly plane
Jason McKee , Special to the Local News 03/03/2004
LIMERICK -- John Salamone might have been too drunk to drive a car when he swooped down to within 100 feet of a busy runway at the Philadelphia International Airport, but he wasnt too drunk to fly an airplane, a district justice ruled Tuesday.
Salamone, of North Coventry, was halfway through a joyride when he penetrated restricted airspace at the airport Jan. 15, according to prosecutors. For four hours, Salamone had flown his single-engine Piper erratically between Pottstown and Atlantic City, N.J., dropping at one point to 50 feet above the Schuylkill River, Federal Aviation Administration officials said.
For three hours, nothing was done. Air traffic controllers tracked Salamones plane with radar as it repeatedly climbed to more than 4,000 feet, only to dive again to within several hundred feet of the ground above Valley Forge, Conshohocken and the Cobbs Creek section of Philadelphia.
Eventually, a Philadelphia police helicopter was called in to help. The chopper, flown by Kevin Lee, attempted to contact Salamone on the radio. Salamone didnt immediately respond. The chopper followed him to Pottstown.
"He flew over downtown Pottstown, did a 180-degree turn and went toward the cooling towers of the Limerick power plant," Lee testified. "We placed ourselves between the towers and the (Pottstown/Limerick) airport, and asked the pilot to follow us (to the runway)."
Lee escorted Salamones plane to the airport, where it was met by several police cars on the runway.
Limerick Police Officer Christopher Missimer said Salamone appeared intoxicated when he got out of the plane.
"His pants were unbuttoned and unzipped," Missimer said. "I detected an odor of alcohol, and he was unsteady on his feet."
Lab results indicate Salamones blood-alcohol level was 0.15 percent. The prescription depressant valium was also found in his system, prosecutors said.
Defense lawyer Joseph Green of West Chester didnt argue his client was sober. Instead, Green attacked the district attorneys interpretation of the DUI statute.
"This law was written with specific limitations," Green told the court. "The DA cant apply it to this case just because its a good idea."
The law, Green argued, pertains to vehicles on the ground. Pennsylvania has separate laws for drunken boaters, but it does not have a law on the books preventing pilots from flying drunk.
"There are no aircraft rules for DUI in Pennsylvania," Green said.....(snipped)

Ok...I'm not even going to comment on this. I do have butterflies in my stomach now. And they are not from CoCo.
