What's the rationale behind the cancellation?

I'm guessing unmanned systems would be cheaper and more effective for reconnaissance, looking down the road. The Marines are deploying mini-UAV's at the company level these days.

$8 BILLION dollars, 21 years, not in production YET. The Comanche sounds like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

The same as was behind the cancellation of Crusader.
Budgetary concerns, transporting it, and the idea of streamlining the military into smaller and supposedly more easily deployable units.

How about "It's too damn easy to shoot down helicopters." The days of traditional helicopters in the shooting zone are numbered.

Don't know why it was cancelled, but given helo missions, they are extremely vulnerable, and easier to shoot down. That has been recently shown in Iraq. Better to use UAV's, and smart bombs. We didn't have many airplanes shot down in the latest war. The closer you get the more vulnerable you are. We have very accurate stand-off technology, so we should use it. It will save lives.
