Rosie Sheds Tears As 'Taboo' Goes Dark
Show Closes After Dismal Ticket Sales, Reviews

POSTED: 1:24 PM EST February 9, 2004
UPDATED: 2:08 PM EST February 9, 2004
Rosie O'Donnell wiped tears away from her face minutes after the final performance of the Broadway musical "Taboo" over the weekend.

The $10 million production was funded entirely by O'Donnell. It told the story of gender-bending pop star Boy George, but folded after three months of mediocre ticket sales and negative reviews.

Fans shouted "Thank you, Rosie!" and held playbills and posters for her to sign.

The former talk show host vowed that someday the show would return.

Dan Akroyd really does deserve a real beating for that movie. What was he thinking?

If I had $10 mil
to throw around, I'd produce
Frank Zappa's THING-FISH * . . .

---------------------------------------------------------
*
"Never actually staged (but hey, it's never too late), the play draws music from previous Zappa discs (mostly YOU ARE WHAT YOU IS), along with a stack of numbers that weren't heard elsewhere. And the plot? Well, the evil government's trying to weed out the population through the use of a doctored cologne, a race of mutant "Mammy Nuns" develops in response, Terry Bozzio enters as the ultimate whiny white guy; the whole crew pays a visit to the Mudd Club, and Dale Bozzio, in what may be the height of her career to date, does unspeakable things with her briefcase. Critics who objected to Zappa's sexual/scatological humor had a field day with this one. But the cultists rejoiced; and some even took to showing up at Zappa concerts in their own Thing-Fish outfits."

By vowing "someday the show would return' she means with 100% financing of somebody else's money. Of course tax dollars would also really be great for her.

The Daily Show said Taboo was canceled because it wasn't gay enough for Broadway.

Although Oprah is a liberal, she's far too smart to make any of these kind of mistakes.
