SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

"Severnaya?"

That word again.
I've continued to have a troubling thought- probably just overly anxious or something. I was thinking back to those posts from EOM or someone like him claiming to have slipped into the US from Mexico. He was bragging that the "Severnaya" project was going well, and made some cryptic comment about "warming up the batteries"--or some such thing.

Sometime later I was reading on a different forum, a post by Sean Osborne Lomax and others, about how suitcase nukes could have been stashed in the US in a manner so as not to need frequent maintenance. The comment was made that this could be done by removing the trigger (I think) and the BATTERY.

Then- even more farfetched- I thought about targets in Texas- Crawford Ranch came to mind.

Chinese diplomats arrive in Baghdad
A team of Chinese diplomats arrived in Baghdad Monday afternoon and will soon start preparations for the reopening of the Chinese Embassy in the Iraqi capital. This is the first time Chinese diplomats have formally returned to Iraq since the US-led coalition launched the war against Iraq in March 2003.

A team of Chinese diplomats arrived in Baghdad Monday afternoon and will soon start preparations for the reopening of the Chinese Embassy in the Iraqi capital.

The Chinese team, comprising seven officials from the Foreign Ministry and the Commerce Ministry and six security guards, will stay in a hotel for the time being while looking for a temporary facility to work in, Sun Bigan, chief of the Chinese team charged with the task of reopening the Chinese Embassy, told Xinhua.

Looting sprees in Baghdad that followed the US-led war on Iraq caused serious damage to the buildings and facilities inside the embassy compound.

The Chinese diplomats will contact officials of the Iraqi Governing Council, the Coalition Provisional Authority and UN offices in Iraq and will also try to help Chinese companies participate in Iraq's post-war reconstruction, Sun said.

Sun, a former ambassador to Iraq, said team members are all braced for the difficulties in living and working conditions and have pledged to spare no effort to fulfill their mission.

This is the first time Chinese diplomats have formally returned to Iraq since the US-led coalition launched the war against Iraq in March 2003. The last Chinese diplomats left Baghdad just three days before the war broke out and the Chinese embassy staff had been staying in Amman, capital of Jordan.

The seven confirmed bird flu cases were Macheng City, Songzi City, Honghu City, Gong'an County and Yangxin County in central China's Hubei Province, Shaoguang City in south China's Guangdong Province and Lhasa City in Tibet Autonomous Region.

A suspected bird flu case in Baicheng City in northeast China's Jilin Province was reported on Monday, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. This is the first case of suspected or confirmed deadly H5N1 bird flu ever occurred in northeast China.

Jia Youling, spokesman in charge of bird flu prevention and control at the ministry, said seven suspected H5N1 bird flu cases in China have been confirmed by the National Bird Flu Reference Laboratory.

The seven confirmed bird flu cases were Macheng City, Songzi City, Honghu City, Gong'an County and Yangxin County in central China's Hubei Province, Shaoguang City in south China's Guangdong Province and Lhasa City in Tibet Autonomous Region.

He said these bird flu-hit areas have taken measures to control the highly pathogenic avian flu, including culling and vaccination, and the epidemic in these areas are now under control.

The local governments have culled poultry in the affected areas and taken prompt quarantine measures, and the epidemic is under control there, according to the ministry.

No change in US position on DPRK nuke issue: official
A senior US official in Beijing Monday reiterated the US position on the nuclear issue of the Korean peninsula, urging "the complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantling of all North Korea's nuclear weapons programs".

A senior US official in Beijing Monday reiterated the US position on the nuclear issue of the Korean peninsula, urging "the complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantling of all North Korea's nuclear weapons programs".

John Robert Bolton, Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs, said that only in this context, "can the US give them the insurance consistent with what President Bush has previously said."

Bolton made the remarks during a visit here to continue dialogues with the Chinese side on issues of common concern.

Bolton said that the US delegate will arrive in Beijing next week for the second round of six-party talks, and there will be no change on the US position.

The second round of six-party talks is scheduled to begin in Beijing on Feb. 25, attended by China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the United States, the Republic of Korea(ROK), Russia and Japan, aiming to seek solutions to the Korean peninsula nuclear issue.

Bolton said he was "neither optimistic nor pessimistic" about the upcoming talks, and he thought there are "many issues to discuss" between the US and the DPRK.

Bolton held talks with Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Zhang Yesui Monday morning, and talked with Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi in the afternoon.

I wonder if it occurred to them to put some of their "troops" there to bring the terrorists to their knees? They want to be "international," let them risk their soldiers lives just as we do for a piece of the reconstruction cake.

I had no idea this is so widespread...

The norovirus has made several appearances at college campuses in recent weeks. Preliminary tests this weekend of more than 200 North Carolina State students indicated they were infected with the virus. And, in the last two weeks, nearly 100 students at University of Michigan and roughly 300 at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill reportedly contracted the virus.

Virus likely at UGA

By Ross Markman
ross.markman@onlineathens.com

University of Georgia and regional health officials Monday were still investigating why more than 100 UGA students were experiencing extreme nausea.
While results aren't conclusive, officials are almost certain the cause is a virus that's spread throughout campus.
''But, at this point, we're just hypothesizing. We really just don't know,'' said Liz Rachun, University Health Center spokeswoman.
