SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

That's what I thought - I could not imagine him being held in a minimum security prison like the one at Falujah.

Cool. An excuse to turn on the TV. I like Chuck Norris. I once stood in line for 3 hours to have him autograph a copy of his book. I was surprised that he only stands as high as my shoulder. His hands are tough as shoe leather.

I'm disappointed that Chuck didn't find a role for Nia Peeples (from the Walker, Texas Ranger show) to play in the movie. That lady wraps up beauty and graceful execution of martial arts moves with decent acting skills.

Iraqi policemen stand near a truck containing the bodies of guerrilla fighters at a Fallujah police station Sunday Feb. 15, 2004. The men were killed, according to Iraqi police, when they and dozens of guerrilla fighters attacked the police station killing 25 people on Saturday. Police claimed foreigners, either Arabs or Iranians, were involved and that two of four attackers killed in the battle had Lebanese identification papers, but a U.S. military officer in Baghdad said the attack's sophistication pointed to former members of Saddam Hussein's military. Iraqis Want to Try Saddam Themselves

KUWAIT CITY - Iraq will ask the United States to remove Saddam Hussein's status as a prisoner of war and hand him to Iraqis for trial, the nation's foreign minister said Sunday.

Hoshyar Zebari said in Kuwait that the new Iraqi government will request that Saddam is "handed over to the Iraqi justice." Zebari was speaking at the end of a two-day meeting with delegates from Iraq's neighbors.

"We have agreed with the United States and the coalition forces that whenever we are ready as Iraqis, and especially after we regain power ... we will demand changing Saddam's status as a prisoner of war," Zebari said.

Washington, which plans to transfer power to Iraqis on June 30, declared Saddam a war prisoner last month because of his status as former commander in chief of Iraq's military.

POW status under the Geneva Conventions grants Saddam certain rights, including access to visits by the International Committee of the Red Cross and freedom from coercion of any kind during interrogations.

The United States has said it wants an Iraqi court to try Saddam, who has been in its custody under CIA interrogation since his capture Dec. 13.

Prisoner of war status does not preclude prosecution or even the imposition of the death penalty, an ICRC spokeswoman has said.

However, POW status prevents Saddam from being tried simply because he led Iraq's military. Rather, there must be evidence he committed war crimes or a crime against humanity, ICRC spokeswoman Nada Doumani said last week.

Washington says Saddam's government killed at least 300,000 Iraqis, including thousands of Iraqi Kurds in a poison gas attack in 1988.

Notice this morning that the US announced that the Red Cross will be visiting Saddam shortly.

That has been in the news since the latter part of last week.

There is no way Saddam would have been locked away in Fallujah which is still overran by Saddam loyalist.

It was reported last night that during the raid and the firefight in Fallujah yesterday the Iraqi police to the US army not to come to the rescue that they (the Iraqi police and their new military) had it under control. I believe that was reported on Geraldo last night or one of the later shows.

Hezbollah Leader Vows to Confront Israel

By HUSSEIN DAKROUB, Associated Press Writer

BEIRUT, Lebanon - The leader of the militant Hezbollah group vowed Sunday to continue attacking Israeli troops in a disputed border area and to prevent any Israeli violations of Lebanese territory.

Sheik Hassan Nasrallah also said his guerrillas would plant explosives on the Lebanese side of the border with Israel in an attempt to stop Israeli infiltrations.

"The Israeli air, sea and land violations amount to attacks on Lebanon's sovereignty. We will confront these violations," Nasrallah told a rally in the southern Lebanese village of Jibsheet, about 55 miles south of Beirut.

"Any Israeli soldier who sets foot on an inch of Lebanese territory must bear the consequences of his action. Whether we will kill him, injure him or take him prisoner, it is our choice."

Nasrallah said Hezbollah's anti-aircraft units will continue firing on Israeli warplanes flying in Lebanese airspace, and his guerrillas will continue attacking Israeli troops until they vacate the disputed Chebaa Farms area captured during the 1967 war.

Israeli warplanes sometimes fly over Lebanon on apparent reconnaissance missions — occasionally rattling residents by breaking the sound barrier — and its ships have sailed into Lebanese territorial waters, prompting complaints by the government.

Sunday's rally was attended by about 5,000 Hezbollah supporters waving the party's yellow flags. The gathering marked the 12th anniversary of the death of former Hezbollah leader Sheik Abbas Musawi in an Israeli attack and the 20th anniversary of the killing of Sheik Ragheb Harb, another Hezbollah leader, by unidentified gunmen.

Hezbollah blames Israel for Harb's killing.

Nasrallah's organization led a guerrilla war against Israel's 18-year occupation of a border zone in southern Lebanon that ended in May 2000.

Lebanon has rejected American demands to dismantle Hezbollah, which is branded a terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department.

The glowing bacteria are cool. There are people in my department working with them as biosensors. They can detect concentrations of metals at much lower levels than any instrument.

The GM glowing fish are another story. I'm not sure what the environmental threat would be. These guys wouldn't last long enough to reproduce. They are a forage or prey fish (small, other fish eat them) There's nothing worse for a forage fish than to be a neon sign that says "Eat Me"!!!

It would be an addition to the gene pool that would be immediately removed by the fishes' predators.

"I read that Lake Erie is in effect a dead lake. Also there are horrific worms in it. Is any of this true?"

Nothing could be further from the truth!!!

The last 20 years have seen some amazing improvements. The Hexagenia mayflies (a very sensitive water quality indicator organism) have come back in such numbers they cause auto accidents, as the roads get so slick with them. They have to use front end loaders to clean them up in some places. In the late 70's, they were thought to be completely extirpated from the lake.

Even when Lake Erie was supposed to be "dead" it was in reality, too alive for it's own good.

I could go on and on, but this is really way off topic!!!If you want more info, freepmail me.

Afghan Raids Net Three Arrests, Weapons

Sun Feb 15, 4:34 PM ET

KABUL, Afghanistan - American forces backed by warplanes sealed off two villages in southern Afghanistan and detained two terror suspects Sunday, while Afghan police and NATO-led troops in Kabul made one arrest and seized arms and terror-related material in another raid.

As many as 60 U.S. soldiers supported by warplanes sealed off a pair of villages Sunday in southern Helmand province and detained two men — Mulvi Abdul Ghafar and Gul Agha — suspected of ties to top Taliban commander Mullah Dadullah, local district leader Haji Amir said.

In a separate operation Saturday, Afghan police and the NATO-led security force raided a suspected terrorist hideout in the Afghan capital, detaining one person and seizing arms and "terrorist-related material," said Rita LePage, a spokeswoman for the International Security Assistance Force that patrols Kabul.

No one was injured in the raid on the home, where five women and 12 children were present, LePage said.

LePage did not give the suspect's name or nationality, but he is not considered a major terror figure. She gave no further details.

The story on the Lake Erie "Deadzone" is a funding ploy. I know that because I know the people that are doing the research. There has always been and always will be anoxic portions of Lake Erie. It's when they start getting too large that trouble starts.

Again, this is a bit off topic, if you wamt more info. freepmail me.

I can't imagine what the threat would be either. Possibly the protein responsible for the glowing was somehow undesirable either environmentally or for humans? But as you note how then would the fish get common enough to cause damage?

However there would be situations where glowing would be advantageous - for example if the fish were poisonous or bad-tasting to the predators in the area, then adding a glow could eventually come to mean "DON'T eat me."

Not to veer off the main subject, but I just remembered something from long-ago postings which rung a bell when I was reading some of Sean Lomax's comments about suitcase nukes. Sent him this freepmail, wonder what other thoughts people have on this.

"I just had the strangest thought. I was looking at your posts from Final Phase and came across the one where you talked about how suitcase nukes could be safely stashed in the US for a period of time without regular maintenance. You mentioned removing batteries and some other item.

Now, when we were following that poster who was bragging about coming into the US from Mexico shortly, I do think he made a comment about the "batteries being ready" or something similar.

I do get a very bad feeling that we are close to flashpoint re AQ, Russia, China, etc. I wonder if the Russian exercises are in one sense defensive. They must known Qaddafi had some beans to spill.

They know that we have the goods on them. We've made it clear that we will retaliate on "State sponsors" of AQ- if we are attacked with WMD.

Maybe I'm overly paranoid, but reverse the situation. If we knew the Russians had just received confirmation that we gave- say- the Chechens- nukes- wouldn't we be worried about the Russians attacking us if the Chechens attacked them? It's a hall of mirrors.

Wonder if Daleel is talking about Aldouri (sp?). It was reported today that the reward for his red head had been doubled. Also on FoxNews today they showed a picture of Aldouri and #41 (the 4 of spades) that was just captured by the Iraqi police.
