SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.
The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Good grief. Can you call your locals for an update? I'd sure want to know about the middle of the night sirens.

We've had them too. The nuclear emergency and tornado sirens have gone off several times when drills weren't scheduled. Everything was fine - some bozo just hit the wrong button. In the meantime they gave me a bit of a scare and a chance to see how fast I could round up my emergency evac supplies LOL. Top speed so far: 3 minutes from the time the sirens start until I'm ready to roll if need be.

Lake Erie by rumor has glowing fish.
That's one heck of a rumor!!!!
I'm a biologist that works in Lake Erie and lake Michigan.
I've never heard of any glowing fish.
I dive in both lakes and fish them regularly and I've never seen any glowing fish...
Why are they supposed to be glowing?

That is a VERY good idea. I need much practice. I fear, as it is, would take me a week, at the least, to be ready to go. :)
Sirens in the middle of the night for you, too? Hair raising is what that is.
To: StillProud2BeFree
Is there a difference in the sound for nuclear emergency and tornado warnings?
To: Letitring
Not that I'm aware of but I've never heard either go off here in an actual emergency, thank God.

Call your city water department and ask them for an update on the water situation.
Call the non-emergency number to your local police departement and ask them what the emergency sirens going off was for.
I don't know if other cities are experiencing the same problem you are with your water.

I wonder since we are Lake Michigan if it has anything to do with this story I found on the Aurora Yahoo? You are looking at the same time frame... Chemical spill prompts Ontario water plant closures Last Updated Mon, 02 Feb 2004 8:01:17 SARNIA, ONT. - About 150,000 litres of toxic chemicals washed into a river in southern Ontario Sunday, forcing communities downstream to close their water intake valves.
The leak came from the Imperial Oil plant near Sarnia. The solvents, used to make oil lubricants, are also found in products like paint and nail polish.
As a precaution, communities along the St. Clair River near the spill were warned to close their water intakes until the river can be tested. The affected plants serve at least 35,000 customers.
Officials said drinking water from their taps remains safe, but they urged people to conserve water. Reservoirs in the communities will last about two days, which experts believe is more than enough time for the chemicals to disperse into harmless concentrations.
Ontario's Ministry of Environment is investigating the spill. Authorities in Michigan are keeping an eye on the quality of the water as well.
The St. Clair River flows into Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River and Lake Erie.
Updated 1700 Saturday, February 14, 2004| Boil Order Remains in Effect
A boil order remained in effect today for all City water customers and is expected to last until late Sunday afternoon.
Friday's and Saturday's tests of the City water supply showed no signs of contamination, but Illinois EPA officials recommended waiting for a third day of clean tests.
City water customers should continue to boil their water for approximately five minutes (or three minutes after a "rolling" boil begins) before drinking, making ice cubes, washing foods, brushing teeth or any other form of human consumption.
The boil order began February 6 when tests showed the presence of E. coli bacteria in the City's water supply. E. coli bacterium is a type of fecal coliform, which can be harmful if ingested. No water samples have tested positive for the presence of E. coli bacteria since Saturday, February 7.
City officials believe that unusually high levels of ammonia in the Fox River, a partial source of the City's water supply, caused the problem.
No illnesses related to the City water supply have been reported. We appreciate the patience of our customers during this difficult time.

=> Army Corps of Engineers releases national report on water resources challenges
WASHINGTON, May 14, 2001 Ten major water resources challenge areas facing the nation are the topic of a national report released today from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The national report documents the results of 16 public listening sessions held across the country from June to November 2000. The listening session forums gathered people of varied interests to identify concerns regarding the nations water resources and to clarify the federal role in addressing those concerns.
The listening sessions were lead by an independent facilitator and attended by a broad cross section of people across the nation with different outlooks on the nations water challenges, said Mark Gmitro, the sessions program manager. Our role was simply to listen and gather their opinions. It was very enlightening.

National Reconnaissance of Pharmaceuticals, Hormones, and Other Organic Wastewater Contaminants in Streams of the U.S., 1999-2000
This field reconnaissance is using newly developed laboratory methods to provide baseline information on the environmental occurrence of a wide range of organic wastewater contaminants in the Nation's streams. By design, most streams sampled were known, or suspected to be, susceptible to sources of human, animal or industrial wastewater. During 1999 and 2000, a network of 139 streams were sampled across 30 states.

Being a biologist you know that there are fish that have a chemical that makes them glow {certain fish}
Isolation of Pure Cultures Of Bacteria
Vibrio phosphoreum from Squid or Ocean Fish
Bioluminescent bacteria are known in four genera and are discussed below.
Vibrio (Photobacterium) phosphoreum is one of my favorite bacteria. A log-phase culture of this bacterium in a clear plastic bottle such as a pop bottle makes an interesting, low-power, light weight flashlight for camping trips. My son and I have done that. This bacterium has long been known as Photobacterium but it has been reclassified as Vibrio.
Vibrio phosphoreum requires oxygen in order to produce light. Here is a nice demonstration that I use in my classes. I use a section of glass or plastic tubing or a pipet about 0.5 to 1.0 centimeter in diameter and 20 to 50 cm long. I stopper each end. I fill the tube about 1/3 full with a growing liquid culture of Vibrio phosphoreum and stopper. As I pour the bacteria into the tube and the kids are impressed by the bluish-green glow. In less than a minute, the glow is almost totally gone.

TAIPEI, Taiwan When the world's first genetically engineered fish, the glowing "Night Pearl," hit the market two months ago, its Taiwan developer hoped for a sea of profits.
But instead, Taikong Corp dived into a barage of criticism from environmentalists who say the 5 cm (2 inch) fluorescent green fish poses a threat to the earth's ecosystem.

Trucker says government harassed him over ricin By Marilyn W. Thompson
A former mail trucker in Jacksonville, Fla., who maintains a Web site that has included accusations of corruption by the government and the trucking industry, says he has been questioned by FBI agents investigating three incidents in which the toxin ricin was sent through the mail.
Daniel S. Somerson, of Jacksonville, Fla., a former trucker for Mail Contractors of America Inc. of Little Rock, said he was interviewed extensively by agents with the FBI's terrorism task force in mid-October.
That was after the first letter containing a ricin vial surfaced in a mail sorting facility near the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport in South Carolina. At that time, Mail Contractors of America trucks brought mail to the facility.
Since then, ricin has been found at a White House mail facility and the office of Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.
Somerson said task force investigators have interviewed his wife at her workplace, a Jacksonville, Fla., school, asking if her husband might have knowledge about ricin, a lethal toxin made from castor beans.
Two agents extensively questioned a friend of Somerson's, another trucker for the same company, Somerson said.
Among the questions asked, Somerson said, was if the other trucker could account for his whereabouts on the dates when ricin, accompanied by letters signed "Fallen Angel," surfaced, and if he believed Somerson could have instigated the crimes.
A law enforcement source said there is "no live suspect" in the ricin mailings and that agents are interviewing truckers in many locations, some based on tips from girlfriends and wives.
The FBI has posted a $100,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the South Carolina case.
Somerson said he believes the FBI "is convinced that I am Fallen Angel or that I inspired Fallen Angel" through several Web sites.
He said he has been a victim of government harassment for some time because of his Web sites, which have been criticized by industry lawyers and government prosecutors.
Last fall, he was found in contempt of court by a federal judge and fined $5,000.
Somerson said he believes the ricin crimes are a "hue and cry from truckers who are fed up with an industry" in which the regulators are "in bed" with the regulated.
The FBI has suggested the South Carolina ricin letter was more an act of extortion than terrorism, sent by someone in the trucking industry upset by new federal regulations about truckers' work hours that went into effect Jan. 4.
The anonymous letters found in the Greenville and White House mailings complained about the regulations, specifically new rules on how long truckers may spend resting in their sleeper cabs.
No letter was found with the small amount of ricin discovered Feb. 2 in the mailroom of Frist's office in the Dirksen Senate Office Building.
Activists say there is deep anger among truckers about the most extensive changes in safety regulations in decades.
Some trucking companies, particularly long-distance haulers, have complained about additional costs for new hires and training that will be necessary to bring them in compliance with the more stringent rules.
The FBI has turned to radio talk-show hosts popular among truckers for help tracking down callers who have complained about the new regulations.
Somerson's main Web site, TruckingSolutions.com, has attracted a following among some segments of the trucking industry.
Claiming federal whistle-blower status, Somerson was involved in a protracted complaint against Mail Contractors of America, the major private carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, over its environmental policies, treatment of drivers and safety record.
Somerson's complaints were dismissed by Department of Transportation administrative law judges, leading him to post on the Internet inflammatory pictures and slogans, and allegations of improprieties by some of the judges.
The contempt of court fine was levied in September after Somerson created Web sites attacking the company and one of its lawyers on a laptop computer during court and displayed them during a recess.
A few weeks later, the first ricin letter surfaced in the airport facility near Greenville, S.C.
Somerson said agents soon showed up at his home and questioned him for about an hour. He said he declined to let them in but spoke to them through an open window.
Somerson said one of his lawyers was on the phone with him during the interview.
