Statement regarding the Super Bowl halftime show
www.superbowl.com ^ | February 1, 2004 | NFL

Statement by NFL Executive Vice President Joe Browne regarding the Super Bowl halftime show:

"We were extremely disappointed by elements of the MTV-produced Halftime show. They were totally inconsistent with assurances our office was given about the show. It's unlikely that MTV will produce another Super Bowl halftime."

183-"anyway, I don't think Timberlake took the breast out to put it to its functional use..."

one of the main functions of the female breast is to attract males. You can see it put to use this way many times every day, on TV, in the movies, in the street, in the stores, in school, etc.

It works perfectly, clothed or unclothed, covered, partially covered, or uncovered.

Thanks, smith ... I was able to vote at your link, too. Both work. It's about 60/40 inappropriate.

Sounds like the Super Bowl halftime show was just a big "FU America" message.

"have Beyonce sing. Her National Anthem was great...anyone else agree?"

NO. I'm tired of all the "warbling" of our National Anthem. I want it sung as written without all the extra moaning with every vowel. Too bad, too, because this girl has a nice voice; she just doesn't know how to use it.

Americans have different standards. Obviously, not the same standards as you have. Television can be, and frequently is, a moral wasteland, filled with empty images and worse sounds. The best part of television is the proliferation of niche channels such as Discovery, History, Weather and HGTV. Americans are "sports nuts". We enjoy a good contest and we like to win. Americans hate losers. We despise losers, therefore, we cheer for the winners. The SB would be great without a half-time "show". It is a waste of good airtime. But, it's included in the offering. People expect to be entertained by it. Not offended or titillated.

This is how I sum up the halftime show.....
Our morally bankrupt society is reveling in it's poverty........
I'm no prude, but keep the garbage on MTV, don't spew it on unsuspecting kids trying to watch a football game halftime show.

Let's say you and your family are in a public place and someone rips your child's shirt open, exposing his breast. How about if someone ripped your wife's shirt open, exposing her breast. Which would offend you most? And why?

Well, I don't see how this relates to this situation. This with Jackson and Timberlake appears to have been a planned evet. It's hard to compare it to an actual assault.

Having said that:

Given that I have allowed myself to become involved in a personal nature in this thread I think it is better if I simply break off my participation in this discussion.

To be fair, given that I am emotionally incensed, I would probably have nothing of value to offer the discussion at this point.

With all that said- I bid the rest of you a good evening and I apologize if I have caused offense to anyone.

The question was posed to someone who stated that he had no problem with others viewing his wife's breasts.

I'm glad I missed it. I am even more glad that I didn't go to my mom & dad's house (70 yo & 82 yo) to watch the game. That would have been very embarrassing.

Do you believe that with a pastie on her nipple, that the whole thing wasn't pre-planned?

Sure it was planned. CBS apologized, but according to Drudge, it was approved at the highest levels. Justin Timberlake complained about the costume failure, but looking at the tape, it appears that he got the result he sought when he pulled on her clothing. The only one I believe was not totally in on things was the NFL. They most likely did not want some matter causing controversy and upstaging their game.

187 - "Now my daughters aren't allowed to watch sporting events.
I got my daughters in bed just in time. Bastards."

Wow, what are youall going to do when the girls get old enough to look in a mirror, or have to dress themselves?

One of these days they are going to discover 'breasts', and what they are used for (to attract boys), and then later to 'keep' bigger boys, and then to 'nurse' smaller boys.

I wonder if anyone besides me speculated that the referees were on the Patriots' payroll...

To be honest, I gave up watching the NFL years ago.

No argument from me on either point, Hildy. She looked classy and sung very well.

That said, I've worked in sports media for about twenty years and the one thing that bugs me beyond words is singers who use the National Anthem as their own personal vehicle of expression.

The song is beautiful enough as it is if you simply sing the notes as they're written. You don't need two or three minutes to do that, IMHO.

I appreciate your polite refusal to answer and will honor your wish to close the subject. But for the record, I do see this as a classic example of moral relativism.

Subject is now closed. Good night.

The artistry of one's music is generally in inverse proportion to the volume at which it is played.

Ummm. That's enough thank you. You have a nice day. Please don't reply to me- ever again.

Oooh, were you offended? What are you, a PRUDE or something? Too bad, so sad.

I love how the big deal is being made about her breast when during the whole song he was simulating doing her from behind. I personally could care less if that was on TV...just not during the Super Bowl.
