WASHINGTON -- Your driver's license soon may become a lot smarter, and a lot more worrisome.
State motor vehicle agencies want Congress to standardize the license, share more driver data between states and mandate techniques such as biometrics to "uniquely identify" each of America's 228 million drivers.

National Driver Register Awards Computer Center Contract The National Driver Registry (NDR) will change computer centers. The NDR runs the Problem Driver Pointer System (PDPS), which all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia are required to check as part of the driver's license issuing process. SunGard Availability Services was awarded the National Driver Register?s (NDR) Computer Center contract. The migration of network and other services from NDR?s current vendor (PFCU) has begun. When the production cutover date, currently projected as late March 2004, is known, it will be posted to the AAMVA Web site.

Ya... instead of securing our borders, let's treat are citizens like criminals.

What I have observed about this, is that it is almost always the federal government that is lobbying the states to push for more uniform drivers licenses that will amount to a national I.D.
It wasn't that many years ago that you did not need a drivers license. Then you could send for one through the mail. There was no picture. Then the state was lobbied to require a picture or be extorted through federal "fund sharing", that is, it could not get back the taxes its citizens had paid if it did not buckle under to federal demands. Then it was a requirement for fingerprints, which has been briefly held back by some states, and a requirement for socialist insecurity numbers, which, as far as I can tell, is now required in every state.
Bad news for liberty. When the state can track your every purchase, they own you, because they will always be able to make a case against you about something.
Everybody commits illegal acts in this age of thousand page bills that even congressman's aides don't read before they are voted on.
Whether you get prosecuted or not will depend on whether you are popular with the party in power. Your party will never be in power forever.

This plan is so pre-9/11. Goes to show in the name of order how far some are willing to travel. Pardon the pun. Travel, get it?

America is the name for the continents North America, Central America and South America combined (or if one includes Central America in North America one should say: North and South America). This landmass is also collectively called The Americas. It is also commonly used to refer to the United States of America, and in American, sometimes used in the meaning relating to the United States of America.

...and the same people who denounce this potential "national ID" are those who also cheer up and defend John Ashcroft and the Patriot Act.

I doubt it.

My driver's license was issued by the county sheriff in Idaho. Same day service. Unlike California where you wait 1 to 3 weeks for the permanent license. The sheriff issues the CCW permits in the same office. I have no interest in seeing the feds gum up a perfectly simple and smooth state administered process.

I seem to remember new conservative darling Zell Miller rammed this biometric DL agenda down Georgia's throat while guberner.

"So their tagline "Helping Secure a Safer America" would normally bring to mind Canada for you? I doubt it.' I would not think Canada, you are correct. I might add those who propagate this TYPE of PLAY on WORDS, actually don't want you to think of Canada or USA at all, only a nation less (border less) landmass. Why? I think you know.
