Edwards Brings His Cornpone to the North
NY Newsday ^ | January 27, 2004 | James P. Pinkerton

Portsmouth, N.H. - There's something about Southerners campaigning among Northerners that causes those Yankees just to melt. John Edwards, the surprise second-place finisher in Iowa, is sweet-talkin' the locals here in New Hampshire, too - and it seems to be working.

Part of the reason for Southern effectiveness, I think, is condescension: Northerners are inordinately impressed when a Southerner can finish a sentence without tobacco spittle running down his chin. Another reason is gratitude: Northerners, expecting to hear an accent such as that of Renée Zellweger in "Cold Mountain," are unduly happy when they can understand what a Southerner is saying.

Amid all this cross-cultural cluelessness, a Southerner who can play the "Dixie card" gets extra credit for being "brave" enough to talk about race. Here, at a Unitarian Church in this chilly seacoast town, Edwards told a lily-white audience, "They say I shouldn't talk about race." The North Carolina senator never bothered to identify "they," leaving his listeners to imagine that some cynical political boss somewhere was threatening him with doom if he mentioned civil rights.

Having set up this strawiest of straw men, Edwards then knocked it over: "We should not only talk about race," he thundered, "we have a moral responsibility to talk about race." The crowd cheered; nobody seemed to notice that Edwards never did, in fact, say anything about race - other than that he would talk about it.

What scares me about Southern Dems, is that they have an easy time fooling Midwesterners into thinking they are social conservatives.

Not to worry--what was his voting record in 2003? 19% or so? Maybe someone will sue the ambulance chaser for failure to earn his paycheck.

He is a filthy evil trial lawyer, the lowest form of life on earth. After all a Cockroach cannot help being a Cockroach it was born that way. This lowlife scum woke up one day and said "I'm going to become a lawyer and use that power to destroy the lives of innocents so I can make lots of money and then donate large amounts to the Democraps so they will create more evil laws so I can make more money and create more of what a lawyer loves most, the pain and suffering of those that cannot fight back.

lawyers are evil scum.

Worse than the cornpone and the Andy Griffin speech pattern, Edwards supports legislation that doubles the size and brightness of the stop lights required on ambulances.

John Edwards is simply the Demoncrats' attempt to create "Rapist 2", another flim-flam Southerner who can whip out the good-old boy charm on cue. The post about that Southerner persona is correct...lest we forget, Rapist masqueraded as a conservative on some issues back in '92.
This guy is so blow-dried, so "polish every pose". That's by design. The Dim's always look in the rear view mirror for the next Kennedy/Clinton/Roosevelt who will somehow put a pretty face on the ugly Socialism/Communism they want to force down the throats of America.

Unless I'm wrong about Edwards future, he is a day late and a dollar short when it comes to jumping on any Democratic bandwagons trolling for charming Southerners to win over the South. It does seem that the Party has just given up on the South and will go with Kerry, a clear New England anti-war liberal who could care less about Southerners. The Dems will always get many of the few remaining WWII-era Southern Democrats who are foolish enough to think their party gives a hoot about them. Many of these voters will simply not vote as they have not in many years, e.g., my poor old mom.
