http://www.suntimes.co.za/2002/11/03/business/news/news08.asp "Shakir Alkhafaji, managing director of Falcon, said South African companies under the banner of his management group were manufacturing their own brand of commodities, such as powdered milk, detergent, soap and sugar, for supply to Iraq.
"Alkhafaji, an Iraqi national, co-founded Falcon with Cape Town businessman Rodney Hemphill in 1993. The company has traded about 500-million in Iraq.
He said the trade protocol and Pahad's visit would open up trade between the countries."

I personally think there was an AQ connection with OKC, coming from the Philippines, but that story is for another day.
I do, too. Wasn't Jayna Davis (sic?) also following this...oh, sorry...that story is for another day (or another thread!) Don't want to get too "chatty."

http://www.theherald.co.za/herald/2002/11/06/news/n09_06112002.htm Saddam backs increase in trade with SA
...While Mr Hemphill and his counterparts are excited by the prospects of increased trade with Iraq, the businessmen are equally concerned about the consequences of the US leading an attack on Iraq.
This will lead to a war, which will not only further destroy the economy of Iraq, but in turn affect all business trade from other countries amounting to billions and billions of dollars each year, he said.
Mr Hemphills partner and international trader, Shakir Alkhafaji, said even under the current rigorous sanctions, Iraqs economy was equal to the Arab-Gulf countries combined. War will destroy this all, he said.
Echoing Mr Hemphills concerns, Mr Pahad said the international community needed to ensure UN arms inspectors entered Iraq as soon as possible to carry out their work objectively and with the sole purpose of determining whether Iraq has weapons of mass destruction or not. ©Business Day

http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/002/605fgcob.asp?pg=2 At the 2000 Expatriate Conference, according to a report in the Jewish newspaper Forward, Al-Khafaji appeared on stage with Tariq Aziz, who was then foreign minister. The pair railed about economic sanctions, which they said were starving the Iraqi people. The official conference website accuses the United States of "terrorism and genocide" in Iraq.
A group of Iraqi opposition figures, alarmed by the rise of the regime-sponsored expatriate organizations, published a letter in London's Al Zaman newspaper on June 13, 2000. They warned that the expatriate groups existed "to throw dust in people's eyes . . . and convince Iraqis abroad that their actions are purely humanitarian and that their only objective is to remove the blockade imposed on our people. In time, however, they revealed themselves to be offshoots of the regime's intelligence services." The opposition warned that "these associations pose a threat to Iraqis abroad and particularly to the dissidents among them, since they spy on their activities and gather information about them which is sent to Iraq and used to threaten their families that are still in the homeland."

Hi, Pro-Bush...will check out David Hoffman's book; thanks! Nichols made several trips to the Philippines and, I believe, had at least one Philippine wife.

I understand.
I read that with a sense of wonder that this type of thing goes on -- on a weekly basis.
Incredible.

I can imagine your fear, as you waited for your husband.
I am so glad he was safe.
I could be wrong on the airports, do remember that several of the crashed flights left from the same area.
