Tancredo for president, group says
Rocky Mountain News ^ | January 21, 2004 | M.E. Sprengelmeyer

Immigration critics in Tennessee want to draft Rep. Tom Tancredo as a protest candidate in the upcoming Republican presidential primary, but don't expect the Littleton lawmaker to become their volunteer.

"A lot of people think my politics are crazy, but I'm not delusional. I don't think I'm going to be president of the United States," Tancredo said Tuesday, in response to a new committee, "Tennesseans for Tancredo," touting a write-in candidacy on the Internet.

Some immigration critics are so upset about President Bush's proposal to offer legal status to millions of illegal immigrants that they want to field a protest candidate in Republican presidential primaries in Tennessee and elsewhere.

A Web site, www.tennesseansfortancredo.com, cites the need to "make noise, collect signatures, build a grass-roots movement that attracts citizens from all walks of life and all political parties."

With or without Tancredo's approval, they hope critics of Bush's plan will write in Tancredo during state presidential contests.

Tancredo said he supports Bush on most issues besides immigration and could not see himself having much of an effect on Bush's chances.

This week, the representative launched "Team Tancredo," a political action committee to raise money for candidates who oppose amnesty for illegal immigrants.

"Tancredo for President" bumper stickers have been floating around the Internet for more than a year.

"It's a conversation starter," he said. "And the conversation usually starts with, 'Who the hell is Tom Tancredo?' ''

Well now that's interesting. If he does it he will finally be admitting that he could care less what we want.

Political pundits have a name for that kind of self-indulgent and self-absorbed action which makes one feeeeel good, but is ineffective and unproductive.

This should be rich. I can't wait to hear what name you're going to attempt to label me with.

Whether he wants it or not he will get it. I do not want my car payment bill to keep coming, but it does. In every life a little rain must fall. I am sure he will be able to cope.

Well for starters I'd be able to sleep at night knowing I voted for someone who wasn't going to give away the store.

The DNC appreciates it when their opponents fragment themselves. It makes it easier for them to take the store.

This isn't about what he wants, it's about what we want.

I can't believe I'm reading this. He's the guy you want, but he has also asked for his name not to be written-in for President.

Has common sense departed the fold? Has myopic pig-headedness invaded the spirit here?

You all have the right to do as you wish, there's no arguing that. But he isn't on the ballot (for President), does not wish to challenge the sitting President for the Oval Office, and has expressed his desire not to have his name written-in on the ballot.

Question: If you can't respect this man's wishes, why should anyone respect yours?

I agree. If he's not running, he can't lose. If he's written in, he will be a loser.

Oh, I'd say you're safe to assume that..........LOL.

He said "We decide??" They obviously want the ISSUE more than they want a solution, don't you think?

I'm bookmarking that.

Tancredo says "I support George W. Bush for President in 2004."

Tancredo says "Do not write my name in on the 2004 Presidential ballot."

That's too clear, however, for those disrupters who desire only to stir up the Bush-bashing pot.

It seems that some people still haven't learned the lessons of supporting at all costs a right-winger purist like Goldwater in 1964.

Some people never learn. Fortunately, Bush will win so big in 2004 that such small numbers of non-learners won't make a difference.

They would have changed history had they been this active back in 2000, though.

I agree with sending the message; I'm not happy with every single thing he does either; but if you're going to send a message, why not make sure it's "delivered," if you get my drift, by voting for somebody who's actually running.

You know it's going to happen Tex. America is starting to outgrow it's two-party system as they are becoming one in the same.

In 1972, Wallace again entered the presidential primaries, this time within the Democratic party. He led off with a Florida victory in which he carried every county in the state. In May 1972, while campaigning in Maryland, Wallace was felled by would-be assassin, Arthur Bremer. As a result of the assassination attempt, Wallace was paralyzed in both legs.

Famous one liner of Wallace "Not a dimes worth of difference between them."

All I know is what I was told by the senate aide. I made the call to find out what my senator's position is on the Bush proposal. I didn't expect that response to say the least. What reason would the aide tell me that? Other than he had gotten the information?
