Thanks TX -- emailed to my brother -- thought he could relate! Let me tell you, from the perspective of a stateside person awaiting the return of a soldier, time is CRAWLING! ;o)

Thanks for the story, I certainly relate to the duality of time passage. Most people will never know the feeling...

GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE. HAPPY PANCAKE WEDNESDAY! Today is our time card day so I only have time to drop in quickly before I finish up my lunch. I hope to get back a little later as I have some important stuff to post!
Before I go I want to SALUTE my great uncle for his service. I found the following information while in NC this past weekend:
Edward MacLeod, USMC, retired Gy/Sgt in 1962. served in the Korean War and WWII.
So, thank you Uncle Mac......![](http://www.complxmind.com/images/newimages/salute.gif)

Tonk,
I thought about you when a friend of mine, a retired Marine Lt Col, was telling a story about when he was in Viet Nam. We were talking about the New Jersey, and one of the times it was scheduled for Naval Gun Support. One of the grunts on the ground called in for gun support, not knowing it was the New Jersey with the massive 16-inch guns. The Marines were 200 yards from the enemy (apparently you were supposed to be 500 yards or more for the 16-inch guns), and when the word "shot" was issued, all they heard was a freight training coming fast, and the Marines just buried themselves in the dirt as this enormous explosion occurs. The Marine calls in and says "What the hell was that?" and the answer over the radio was "Didn't you know? Today you've got the New Jersey." The shot wiped out the hill as well as the bad guys.

WOW!
I was there in Feb 69 when the New Jersey was stationed there.
My ship was the USS CORRY DD 817
Our 5" 38 cal guns were quite overwhemlmed by the USS NEW JERSEY 16" guns.
We were sitting along side her when she 1st opened up.
I'm pinging FReeper onedoug who was in the Army back then.

Good Day! It has been a great day so far. Working away and keeping up with all the political stuff on FR when I get a quick break. Well, the fallout from the SOTU is starting to hit the talk shows, and the RATs are scurring about trying to coverup their mistakes. Great day, indeed.

There are a few things I've wanted to experience in my lifetime:
The feeling of large-caliber guns being fired
SR-71 Blackbird take off
F-4 Phantom II take off
B-52 flying low overhead
Today's modern military seems to have taken the fun out of most of these, but I did have the chance to see the Germans take off in their F-4's (they were stopping over at Langley before heading out west to Hollaman AFB). I think I joined the service too late. The rest I'm still waiting for.
