Campaign signs at the Best Western Harbor View in Melbourne Friday read "Jackie Colon for County Commission District 5." Voters first saw those signs in 2000 when Colon initially won the seat.
But in the fine print at the bottom of the signs, the "D" that followed Colon's name was taped over and replaced with an "R."

Like me, Jackie Colon can now proudly call herself a "Recovering Democrat".

Clearly, though, being a Republican would help her if she does seek another office in the future. Her state House and Senate districts are strongly Republican, as is her congressional district. She sees where the trends are going, and she's jumping ship. Shes just being a political oppurtunist.

She sees where the trends are going, and she's jumping ship. Shes just being a political oppurtunist. Maybe, but she is running for re-election; she had already won as a Democrat. No reason she couldn't have done it again.
And the trends are going the way they are going because a lot of people are making exactly the same shift for many of the same reasons. I think 9/11 was a wakeup call for a lot of people, and I further think that the viciousness of the attacks on Bush are having a reverse effect on a lot of people.

I agree. That's why I predict a landslide win for GW no matter who is the Dem candidate.

She sees where the trends are going, and she's jumping ship. Shes just being a political oppurtunist. So you think she should remain a conservative Democrat in a liberal Rat party? That would be more ethical, associating with people whose beliefs she doesn't share?

A: Both mean one less Colon is full of s**t.
Now, if we could only send Rectum Powell to the Democrats.

FWIW, Colon is the Spanish rendering of Columbus.
Perhaps she got tired of the family name being trashed by the Dem race-baiters every year.
Mrs. Thorne (of Puerto Rican origin, with Colon blood herself), has many colorful expletives for the 'anti-Columbus' activists. It's like a yearly ritual.

Jackie's jump
FLORIDA TODAY
If elected Democrats in Brevard County were an endangered species heading into this election year, they are now on the brink of extinction.
Brevard County Commissioner Jackie Colon of Palm Bay, first elected to the board in 2000 as a Democrat, switched parties Friday and said she will seek a second term in November as a Republican.
Those who know Colon or have watched her closely were not taken aback. She often talks about her conservatism, and said her pro-life stance and support for President Bush after Sept. 11 made it the logical thing to do.
"It was more of a personal decision," she said. "It's important for me to feel comfortable in my own skin."
The defection leaves only one Democrat in a partisan office in Brevard -- County Commissioner Nancy Higgs, who faces re-election in the fall.
The situation brings into stark relief the challenge facing the Brevard County Democratic Party this year in fielding high-quality candidates to challenge GOP incumbents and provide voters what is absolutely essential for healthy government:
A strong debate of the issues, and a real choice at the ballot box.
Local Democrats have a mountain to climb, and they'd better get at it if they haven't already.

Colin Powell:
* Convinced Bush Sr. to leave Saddam in place
* Convinced Bush Jr. to wait and give time for an international hatefest to build against the US
* Supports baby-killers
* Supports racist Affirmative-action policies
Colin Powell is the worst cabinet member ever to serve a Republican president. He makes O'Niell look loyal, Matsui conservative, Haig unambitious, and Liddy prudent.
And what was beyond the pale STUPID, just slack-jaw, fire-the-guy stupid was this exchange on MTV:
Idiot campus lefty asks about whether he supports the Pope's ban on the use of condoms, which "condemns homosexuals to death."
Powell doesn't point out that the Pope doesn't have the authority to ban anything
He doesn't point out that condoms don't make anal sex safe.
He doesn't point out that homosexuals aren't abiding by church teaching anyway.
He doesn't even say that that it's a religious issue and not for him to comment on.
No, the man who sees nothing wrong with Wahhabism publicly sees fit to denounce the Pope bases solely on the false presumptions of an 18-year-old faggot hippy.
Powell is a career pencil-pusher who benefits from the same "safe black" syndrome that made the awful Hootie and the Blowfish the big pop-rock band of the '90's, and allows the media to ignore the conservative blacks who are smart enough to know how to wipe the sh!t off their own asses, like Alan Keyes, Condi Rice, Vernon Robinson, etc.
No wonder he is so beloved by the French, the Democrats and the TV news anchors. ANd if you have any questions about his comptence, notice how Baker did more in two weeks than Powell accomplished in three years.

Colin Powell did not convince Bush to leave Saddam in place that is a flat out LIE. The operation was under a UN mandate which was limited to getting Iraq out of Kuwait not removing Saddam.
Another LIE is that he convinced Bush II to WAIT for anything. Bush waited to mobilize sufficient forces to do the job right. Unlike you who would fly off half-cocked before the forces were ready if your half-assed remarks are consistent with your thinking.
The rest of your remarks is equally distorted and irrelevent. Maybe that explains how you can call a group which had ONE mediocre hit the "band of the nineties." Something happen to Pearl Jam or Nirvana or Boys to Men or any of a half dozen other far more popular groups than Hootie? Your cultural awareness equals your political.
Alan Keynes certainly is not ignored by the media and the demise of his show was more the fault of him than the media. It gave him a chance and he failed. Condi has been called a "supporter of baby-killers" by other numbskulls with equal irrelevence.
NONE of those groups you mentioned like Powell ALL hate his guts as much as you. Ronald Reagan did not appoint him as his National Security advisor for EEO reasons as anyone who knows anything knows. You also misstate Baker's mission as well. In fact, there is not enough truth in your ridiculous
post to fill a thimble.

>> Colin Powell did not convince Bush to leave Saddam in place that is a flat out LIE. The operation was under a UN mandate which was limited to getting Iraq out of Kuwait not removing Saddam. >>
What you say about the UN mandate is true. About the time Hussein turned on his own people, there was a vigorous debate in the Bush I White House about whether to support the Kurds and Shiites. Powell's argument won, and Bush left them to be slaughtered.
>> Another LIE is that he convinced Bush II to WAIT for anything. Bush waited to mobilize sufficient forces to do the job right. Unlike you who would fly off half-cocked before the forces were ready if your half-assed remarks are consistent with your thinking. >>
We could have been in by March, 2002 (7 months). Insiders credit Powell, and Blair, for urging Bush to wait 19 months. I'd liked to see us in there by October, 2002.
>>Maybe that explains how you can call a group which had ONE mediocre hit the "band of the nineties.">>
I did not call them the "band of the nineties." I call them the *pop-rock* band of the '90s, specifically to exclude Pearl Jam, et al. (Where did you dig up Boyz II Men?) THey sold over 50 million albums, and had a long series of chart-topping songs, much to my own horror and dismay. But I digress.
>> Alan Keynes certainly is not ignored by the media and the demise of his show was more the fault of him than the media.>>
Alan Keyes was a black man holding the same position as Madeline Albright did initially: UN Ambassador. He was also a State Dept. undersecretary. When he ran for president, he was treated as though he was Ambassador to Lesotho. Although he raised 10 times more money than Al Sharpton, and got three times more support than Dennis Kucinich, he was not invited to the debates. *Subsequently* (i.e., when it didn't matter at all), he got a show on MSNBC, based on his popularity with conservatives.
>>Condi has been called a "supporter of baby-killers" by other numbskulls with equal irrelevence. >>
Although her stand on abortion is not well defined, we do know Condi doesn't actively campaign for abortion, and press the Bush adminsitration to giving tens of millions of dollars directly to baby killers.
>>NONE of those groups you mentioned like Powell ALL hate his guts as much as you. >>
O come on, get real. He's always presented as the "good cop" by the media. Dan Rather wants to have his baby.
