State of the Union 2004 Banner State of the Union 2004 Banner

President Bush will deliver the annual State of the Union this evening at 9:01pm (Eastern Time). The speech will be webcast live on the White House web site.

The President will discuss the extraordinary challenges our country has faced and the historic achievements we have made. Yet he will also stress that there.s much more for our country to do:

"America this evening is a Nation called to great responsibilities. And we are rising to meet them…"

"We have not come all this way – through tragedy, and trial, and war – only to falter and leave our work unfinished. Americans are rising to the tasks of history, and they expect the same of us."

He will also remind the American people that we are a Nation still at war, and our government is meeting its responsibility to protect the American people:

"Our greatest responsibility is the active defense of the American people. Twenty-eight months have passed since September 11, 2001 – over two years without an attack on American soil – and it is tempting to believe that the danger is behind us. That hope is understandable, comforting – and false."

"...America is on the offensive against the terrorists..."

"As part of the offensive against terror, we are also confronting the regimes that harbor and support terrorists, and could supply them with nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons…"

"...Because of American leadership and resolve, the world is changing for the better…"

He will discuss the progress we’re making in Afghanistan and Iraq, and renew our commitment to ensuring those countries are free and peaceful:

"The men and women of Afghanistan are building a nation that is free, and proud, and fighting terror…"

"The work of building a new Iraq is hard, and it is right. And America has always been willing to do what it takes for what is right."

On priorities here at home, the President will discuss why he’s optimistic about our growing economy, and call on Congress to take action that will help turn our economic recovery into a lasting recovery. He will call on them to help train Americans for the jobs of the 21st Century:

"America’s growing economy is also a changing economy. As technology transforms the way almost every job is done, America becomes more productive, and workers need new skills… We must respond by helping more Americans gain the skills to find good jobs in our new economy."

President Bush will also discuss the importance of health care and the major cause for why Americans lack health insurance: the rising costs of health care.

"On the critical issue of health care, our goal is to ensure that Americans can choose and afford private health care coverage that best fits their individual needs. To make insurance more affordable, Congress must act to address rapidly rising health care costs."

Finally, the President will argue that in a time of great change in our country and world, the things that make our country strong should never change:

"We are living in a time of great change… Yet some things endure – courage and compassion, reverence and integrity, respect for differences of faith and race. The values we try to live by never change. And they are instilled in us by fundamental institutions, such as families, and schools, and religious congregations. These institutions – the unseen pillars of civilization – must remain strong in America…"

"All of us – parents, schools, government – must work together to counter the negative influence of the culture, and to send the right messages to our children."

"The President shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient."

Let me explain it to you. Judicial activists are attempting to redefine our society. They are abusing the power of the bench.

So the answer is to have some "conservatives" abuse the power of the Constitution?

Fred's comments were particularly barbed. I know his wife has MS or another very debilitating disease, rendering her completely helpless .. I feel he must've been very strained tonight, with her condition heavy on his mind. But .. it was out of line, nevertheless.

It is Mort Kondrake's wife that has the Medical problem,... he is also a Democrat and was really hot about Bush showing a lack of compassion tonight , but he plays that theme a lot.

Ah, you and I had the same thought. I did not turn on the computer until the last of the applause died down.

No way was I going to watch the haters either. Just reading the reports from Freepers.

The speech was wonderful.....every last minute of it. The man makes me so proud!

And it's hardly beneficial to slap in the face the members of the hard-working Border Patrol who put their lives on the line daily to protect our borders.

Yeah...they're doing such a great job. Only 8 million illegals in the country so far. LOL.

On the bright side, both sides of congress were cool, to say the least, to the cheap labor immigration proposals.

Both sides of Congress are two sides of the same coin, I'm sure you know.

The very concept of allowing businesses to hire who is best suited for a job is foreign to them, if you get my drift.

I think it was one of those "tall tale" moments. I know one hell of a lot about H1B and the tale of woe is not credible.

Isn't it amazing that we must believe ~your~ claim about H1B, while we doubt your opponents?

Tex, you have litle or no credibility here. You're only fooling yourself..
Face up to that fact..

Pelosi's face is like a mask....her teeth were brighter than her pearls.....very distracting. Little Timmy looked deeply saddened.....He looked like the President's 'zingers' really got to him.

Exactly right. Hubby drilled a hole and moved the satellite receiver that used to be in my daughter's bedroom (she has moved out) and we bought a 13" color TV for $69.00.

Works great! I have my own little bunker!

I like the sound of this... I want my own little bunker too! LOL ;-D

The next best line was (paraphrasing), "Some parts of the Patriot Act are set to expire next year....(Dem applause) but the terrorist threat will not expire on that schedule"...(HUGE Republican applause).

ATI "All-in-Wonder"? I've never heard of that. Sounds pretty cool. Will that work on an old First Edition Windows 98 PC? ;-)

Stay away from any TV card product made by Pinnacle. They suck. The ATI All-in-Wonder is a TV tuner integrated with a video card. If you have a decent video card already, you can just get their TV card for well under $100. Should not be a problem on an old machine, but you will probably have trouble capturing video without dropping frames. Single frame captures should work OK. Live TV on the computer screen is great!!

Maybe you should check with Tancredo. I don't think he plans to run for president. Actually I'm sure he's not. Tancredo is, I'm 99.9% sure, voting for
President George W. Bush. Call his office and ask :)

"Reading the press these last few days, I was prepared to dislike some of the president's proposals as they sounded very liberal to me, and like and expansion of goverment. It's quite possible Fred read the same press and wrote a prepared rebuttal to the president's speech before he actually heard it."

NO EXCUSES. Fred is responsible as a journalist not to read a prepared rebuttal. He is a paid live commentator.

The plan is for people ALREADY HERE.

In other words, the folks hidden away who are in an underground economy afraid to become more visible in our society.

How can it be causing a flood for illegals when the plan is simply intended to get those already here from hiding away?

I know the H1B program as well as anyone on this forum and I know that what you described is not what happens. But you are right; I don't know "spit".
