Dean was the media's wishful thinking manifested as objective "fact"

Unfortunately, Dean self imploded before he had it all wrapped up. I have been a close follower of politics for over 25 years, and this freefall even surprises me. I think a ticket of Kerry at the top and Edwards as VP would provide a tough ticket for Bush. What do you all think?

Probably the toughest combination of those still realistically in the hunt. It recreates the classic Kennedy/Johnson ticket of 1960.

On the other hand, this isn't 1960. The Dems haven't won with a northern liberal since 1960. My money would still be on Bush, but he'd have to work harder for it than with any other likely combination.

Kerry/Edwards would be a potent combo, no doubt. Kerry would have the "gravitas", Edwards would have the looks. Both "appear" to be middle of the road.
That would be a fight I'm not looking forward to.

You're right: This kills Gephardt.

Neighboring state.

BIG union involvement, union promotions, union money.

And all he got from it ......... nothing.

And all the unions got from it?

Nothing.

Harkin ran uncontested in Iowa in 1992.

There were still votes cast for others. Example:

He's worked that "son of a mill worker" phrase too damn much to suit me.

Especially since it's misleading. "Son of a mill factory" manager" would be more accurate, although it's not quite as "just plain folks" as "son of a mill worker". Edwards' Daddy, if I'm not mistaken, was "boss man" at the mill, at least by the time Edwards was growing up.

I think it would be great if DEAN ran as a 3rd party candidate! Wouldn't that be a hoot?

Honestly though, I'm nervous about Kerry. Always has been. The guy is a nutcase but he can interview well. He can seldom come up with a concrete answer but maybe voters like that. And again, his environmentalist message is much more appealing than Al Gore's. He's also only suggested repealing Bush's tax cut on the top 1% which, unfortunately, appeals to a lot of people. I hope Dean bounces back in NH!

Another note...remember Dick Morris and all his predictions about Dean and how he's changed the face of campaigns to come with his use of the Internet. Well, it sure didn't work in Iowa!

Kerry has always frigtened me. Edwards is an empty suit but is in training for the big job. Sort of a clinton without as much Saavy. Kerry will run strong.

I agree with you about Edwards.

But I think Kerry will be a lot weaker candidate than many predict.
Let's remember that he voted for the Iraq war and then made up some lame excuse for not supporting how Bush went about it.

This kind of hairsplitting opposition makes him look like Bush-lite. I don't believe he can provide a strong opposition to Bush when it comes to the divide over Iraq.

And I think when national security becomes the defining issue, Bushs beat Kerry and everybody else big time.

This is Bush's strongest point.

Besides, I think Kerry is a very weak debater, who says things that make no sense and don't inspire confidence. That is why he was so low in the polls until recently. He only made big tonight because Dean imploded within the past two weeks.
