Rush's PERFECT comments Re: Donovan McNabb
me

Posted on 01/19/2004 9:26:26 AM PST by Pukin Dog

For those who missed it, Limbaugh performed the most perfect comments on Donovan McNabb this morning by not even mentioning his name.

Instead he contrasted the way that Payton Manning came out and took responsibility for his performance against the way that the media instantly set out to blame the Eagles' wide recievers for what happened to them.

It was the best revenge, because by not mentioning McNabb, no one in the media can say that Rush attacked McNabb, but to all us football fans, what Rush DIDNT say, was LOUD AND CLEAR. Thanks Rush!

many people have subconsciously questioned why the media continues to paint McNabb as a brilliant player.

maybe because they want to see a black succeed?

I like when Rush picks fights with the liberal Media and its ever-annoying political correctness. I enjoy it even more when he's proven right. That is of course why he's target #1 to neutralize before 2004 elections.

When Soviet-stlye communism was still around we heard stories how every question of truth, academic or scientific, was decided politically. Now in the land of the Bill of Rights via "political correctness" we have politicians advancing dubious policies based upon polemical theories about weather. And a sportscaster can't say that a mediocre QB is mediocre because the Media is making him larger than he is because he's black.

But the question should be: Why Rush more right than the other sportscasters?

You forgot that Kenny "the snake" Stabler was a scrambler too.

Well, Danny White just was not a top-level NFL QB. He very nearly won the "Catch" game before (as I recall) a fumble on the last minute drive that would have given Dallas a winning FG. If I had to compare them, I'd say Danny White was about 30% of Dallas' offense back then, whereas McNabb is expected to be about 70% of Philly's O.

Look - to EVERYONE who is giving me ths crap about how McNabb wasn't down/defenseless/etc.:

Where were you last week when the officials invoked "in the grasp" to force 4th-and-26 on a play when he was on both feet AND able to subsequently throw a ball to James Thrash?

The bottom line is that McNabb was flat on his back, legs sticking up, and Favors threw his full body weight on the back of McNabb's left thigh.

If you disagree with the previous paragraph, watch the replay, as it's not my job to educate you.

Similar plays have happened time and time again, and been concluded with much less dramatic "tackles", without injuries, and, even in some of THOSE cases, with yellow flags and/or fines.

The NFL's application of a whole swath of rules is horribly inconsistent, and anyone who things everything was as it should on that play clearly has a horse in this race.

Time for lunch.

Jim Plunkett was the QB when they won 2 of their 3 Super Bowls.

They always say that both winning and losing are habits. It really seemed to me yesterday that Philly has gotten in the habit of losing the NFC championship. Every time something bad happened the players (except for McNabb who was pretty emotional) just seemed to shrug and accept it. By the end Pinkerton (I think that's his name) was running his routes without every turning around to look for the ball which had usually just zipped by him unnoticed, and those balls were thrown by Koy so we can't blame McNabb for them.

I think what Philly really needs at this point is to not make the playoffs next year, get a year off from the championship and do some serious rebuilding.

I have never had the impression that Rush has anything against Donovan McNabb. He actually seemed to enjoy the fact that, post ESPN comments, Donovan brought his game up several notches for the rest of the season. Rush seems to instead have a burr up his saddle about the sports media's kid gloves treatment of a quarterback because of said quarterback's race.

McNabb isn't (yet) in the same league as Montana, Elway, or Favre. To describe a player as "overrated" is more a description of those who rate the player than the player himself. These same mediots calling Limbaugh a racist bigot simply reinforces the fact that for them it is all about race. They have by now, and especially after last night's mediocre performance (every quarterback has bad games, ask Peyton Manning), illustrated the point Rush was trying to make a hundred times over.

Once the QB puts the ball in somebody's hands everything that happens after that isn't his fault."

This is right on. I think any legit NFL observer will agree with this. Course, Cowboy fans want to blame Quincy Carter for his INTs, even when twice the ball was right in the receivers' hands and bounced out into a defender's hands.

All I'm asking for is consistency: either it's ALWAYS the QB's fault, or it NEVER is.

"McNab was injured quite early on."

McNabb consistently stood in the pocket too long. He played as if he had been coached not to make any mistakes. He was afraid to throw the ball, held it too long, and got the snot kicked out of him. Hardly the stuff legends are made of.

No, it was near the beginning of the second quarter - he went off for attention well before half-time. I agree that McNab did not play well, but the Panthers were in his face all the time. No QBs play well under those circumstances. McNab's not the best QB in the league, but if you're going to kick him when he's down, do it with facts.

The bottom line is that McNabb was flat on his back, legs sticking up, and Favors threw his full body weight on the back of McNabb's left thigh.

Which is perfectly legal in the NFL:

Digest of Rules

Protection of Passer
1. By interpretation, a pass begins when the passer -- with possession of ball -- starts to bring his hand forward. If ball strikes ground after this action has begun, play is ruled an incomplete pass. If passer loses control of ball prior to his bringing his hand forward, play is ruled a fumble.

2. When a passer is holding the ball to pass it forward, any intentional movement forward of his arm starts a forward pass. If a defensive player contacts the passer or the ball after forward movement begins, and the ball leaves the passer’s hand, a forward pass is ruled, regardless of where the ball strikes the ground or a player.

3. No defensive player may run into a passer of a legal forward pass after the ball has left his hand (15 yards). The Referee must determine whether opponent had a reasonable chance to stop his momentum during an attempt to block the pass or tackle the passer while he still had the ball.

4. No defensive player who has an unrestricted path to the quarterback may hit him flagrantly in the area of the knee(s) or below when approaching in any direction.

5. Officials are to blow the play dead as soon as the quarterback is clearly in the grasp and control of any tackler, and his safety is in jeopardy.

Lamonica, Stabler, Stabler

Nope. Stabler started and lost all three. He took over for Lamonica midway through that season and stayed the starter for several more years.

The Rams lost three in the mid-70s but had a smorgasboard of QBs. As stated earlier, White started all three NFC losses in the early '80s, but was knocked out of the third one, one (or perhaps THE) reason the skins won or at least won so convincingly (Dallas and White beat them eariler in the year).

Danny White was a much better passing QB than McNabb, but didn't have the running tools McNabb has. Of the two in their prime with good receivers, I'd still take Danny White, who had the best ball fake on play action I've ever seen. Unfortunatly, Danny was never well liked or respected on his team.

You might be right . . . but when? I went to Arizona State when DW was there, and even as a Sun Devil fan, it was clear that White did not have an NFL arm. He hung around on his smarts and his punting ability.

Bill Walsh: "There just isn't a way to play the position as a pure runner. We've seen it attempted over the years, but never with great success. Steve Young was as great a runner as there has ever been in football but he didn't start to make a difference until he became a great passer as well."

"See, that's the point: QBs do NOT get a pass in other cities. In Dallas, the fans rip Quincy Carter, despite a 10-6 season with a team figured to win 7 games. Jon Kitna in Cincy gets no love. But McNabbit was the second coming.

Agree. Even in Buffalo, Drew Bledsoe (who is much, much better than McNabb) had a terrible time in the press this past year. No mercy for any NFL QB, unless your name is Leon McQuitt.
