[history]
President Bush's immigration initiative has angered conservative Republicans so much that some are refusing to donate to his re-election campaign, according to a Bush fund-raiser in Georgia.
Phil Kent, a member of the host committee for a Bush fund-raiser in Atlanta yesterday, said he was told by several would-be donors that they would not attend the $2,000-per-person event because of the president's announcement last week on immigration reform.

Hi Jmouse!
I agree. Some people here on FR think that just because George Bush does what he was elected and expected to do by protecting us from terrorists, he should be forgiven for driving us further into socialism, opening the borders, declaring he'd sign the Assault Weapons extension and a host of other things.
It's like the battered wife who says, "Sure, he beats me, but he's a good provider, and besides, I have nowhere else to go."

I think it is better than the current staus quo. Is it perfect, no, nothing is. There is no way that you can deport 8,000,000 people, I think the status quo might be better. There is no way you can do good background checks on 8,000,000 (or many more) people, printing them all blue cards which give them access to the entire USA and they can come and go over the border and bring their families in ---- what's left of them in Mexico would be a massive undertaking. The blue cards can be sold just like the green cards often are.
They don't have it so bad being illegal --- it makes coming and going a bit harder which might not be such a bad thing. Many are temporary anyhow but all are easier to deport if found committing other crimes if they're left illegal.

Oh, they went through the motions like trying to force businesses (as they say they will now) to be the immigration police via the I-9 form that was created and still in use.

They wouldn't BE illegal immigrants under Bush's program. They would be workers regulated under the new system, similar to the "bracero" program of the '40s and '50s. BTW I didn't say it had to be Bush's program or nothing. I am open to whatever.
What is your proposal?

If haven't noticed Argentina is in as bad shape as Mexico is. So there goes your theory......
Nonsense. Historically, Argentina has been one of the wealthist Latin nations. I doubt there is grinding poverty like you will find in Mexico.

No money for President Bush from me until:
1) Close Our Border,
2) Put Our House In Order.
Lets chant:
CLOSE THE BORDER, HOUSE IN ORDER! CLOSE THE BORDER, HOUSE IN ORDER! CLOSE THE BORDER, HOUSE IN ORDER! CLOSE THE BORDER, HOUSE IN ORDER! CLOSE THE BORDER, HOUSE IN ORDER! CLOSE THE BORDER, HOUSE IN ORDER!......

Counting on it.
And now to get Mr Howard turned around on the ownership and bearing of arms ...........

Your post #181 is an excellent assessment of the situation. I have nothing but the utmost respect for President Bush and pray for him daily, but I can not support policies that are going bankrupt America and to enslave our sons and daughters along with all future generations of Americans to support illegal immigrants, with free jobs, free health care, free college tuition and social security bennies after 18 months all so that he can make kissy points with Vincene Fox, and the Hispanic population here and in South America.
Our oldest son incurred a debt of $40k and our youngest will end up owing over $60k just to pay for his college education, and I do not know about you but we have to PAY for the healthcare we receive and if we do not have it, we have to get it. There are no free rides for Americans but for illegals...cue the music: "everything free in America... ok by me in America".
Our oldest son just graduated last year and is working as a computer programmer... his job is in jepordy of being "outsorced" to a third world hell hole where people subsist on slave wages, but hey it is America and according to the president foreigners are being given the jobs that "Americans do not want to do".
The president may get 4 more years with such a ploy, but American CITIZENS/taxpayers and future generations of us will be paying for it the rest of our lives... FOREVER because once "entitlements" are established, they are NEVER rescinded, .... NEVER! I, and multitudes of other sane Republicans can not and will not be a party to this.

Don't bet on this Bill not passing. We all thought campaign finance reform wouldn't pass either, and it did through all three branches.

Thanks for your kind reply. I wholeheartedly agree with you. I have a son-in-law in IT that faces the same predicament. We were told, "Don't worry about the manufacturing jobs leaving, the new jobs will be in technology. Of course, they didn't tell us they'd be farming the tech jobs out, and opening up the borders to bring in workers for the jobs that couldn't be "outsourced".
Here is a little thing I posted on another thread, which I shamelessly repost here. I think it fits.
But had the Captain of the Titanic reduced the price of the cruise tickets, cut drink prices, and declared "no loser nights" at the onboard casino, had I been on the maiden voyage with him, I never would have let him captain another ship I was on.
All the best

"This program will offer legal status, as temporary workers, to the millions of undocumented men and women now employed in the United States..."
Undocumented men and women, aka. illegal aliens. That is the same as granting a pardon and in effect the same as amnesty.
When I think of amnesty, it think of illegals being granted the right to stay and apply for citizenship.
I would not call a "temporary worker" permit amnesty.

I can't take credit for the chant, I heard it on the Rusty Humphrey radio show this afternoon.
I'll bet it sounds really great with drums a beating. 5 gallon buckets make great drums.

I have yet to hear any of the dems talking about the exodus of hitech jobs [You] I thought maybe Gephardt would be the guy to do it but he hasn't. They seem to be avoiding it like the plague.
Yeah, what's the deal with that? It's a close-to-the-bone, lunch-bucket issue the Dems used to specialize in. Why aren't the 'Rats all over it? Did they get too embarrassed over the "Atari Democrats" when Atari suddenly pulled up pegs and moved to Taiwan? (BTW, saw an article recently, Atari's moving some things back to the States -- firm still exists, amazingly, despite having been overreached by Sega, Sony, and Chairman Bill.)
