CDC's 10 Most Dangerous Dogs List

POSTED: 3:58 PM EST January 14, 2004

Tuesday's fatal dog attack in Harnett County is not as rare as you may think. Dogs kill 10 to 20 people in the United States every year.

Last year in Orange County, 300 dog bites were reported, and 350 were reported in Raleigh.

While national statistics show at least 30 breeds have attacked humans, 10 dog breeds are on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's most dangerous list, meaning they tend to bite the most frequently. They are:

Pit bulls
Rottweilers
German Shepherds
Huskies
Alaskan Malamutes
Doberman Pinschers
Chow Chows
Great Danes
St. Bernards
Akitas

The breeds considered most likely to kill are pit bulls and rottweilers, and the CDC says that a chained dog is more likely to bite than an unchained dog.

The CDC also says the majority of dog attacks happen at home or in a familiar place, which is why choosing the right dog for your family is crucial.

Our youngest dog Aston is great at agility and still the fastest in the dog park. Bentley is better at obedience. One is built for comfort, the other for speed.

They can be stubborn. Not usually recommended for small children but really friendly little dogs who tend to get themselves into trouble because they think they are as big as a rottweiler. Lots of energy. Most people don't think about that when they see them. They don't realize they were bred to hunt prey. When the breed was being developed, back when dogs had to "pay" their way and weren't simply pets, the litter was culled by placing a 9 month old westie in a barrel with a badger. The survivors joined the clan. They are tough tough little guys. What's more, they work in teams instinctively (a real kick to watch several of them going to hunt). I've had several different breeds and these guys are the most intelligent (I think it's the "working in packs" thing).

Killer cuddlers they are. btw, the site these photos come from have lots more and worth the visit. It's not my site and I do not know any of these folks.

I have already told the puppy that, in our pack, he is Omega Dog.

He gets free room and board, plus when he enters a room, everyone competes for his affection. Are you sure about that designation?

I get scared anytime I hear the words "laws" and "bull" in the same sentance... I know that an English Bulldog is a different breed, but some people don't know and don't care... I've got a friend who owns my little buddy, Jack

He's one of the coolest, most mellow dogs on the planet... My friend got him from a farmer, and he was a real farm dog... My friend managed to break him of those bad habits, like getting up at 5:00am and wanting to run around all the time... She's managed to turn him into a couch potato is less than a month!

But he's a sweetie with lots of personality... Once his mind is set on something, it gets done. If you're between him and where he wants to be, you will be moved! If you're sitting where he wants to be, prepare to have a 70 pound bulldog take up residence on your lap... Or manuver you right out of the chair!

Westies are the most dangerous, by far!

A squirrel told me so!

My sister's friend had a Yorkie, she lives in a fancy part of Scottsdale that used to be a desert preserve. A hawk swooped down and picked it up and ate it. Gotta be careful with them tiny little dogs...

If someone wants to own a border collie, they need to understand that intensity. Wonderful dogs...if the AKC doesn't ruin them!

I think they are well on their way...the ones I see at shows look like Aussies with tails. They ones doing agility look like (and act like) they are supposed to! Nothing againsts Aussies, though; we have two!

True, he isn't going outside without me! Last year someone posted a sad thread about their Yorkie being 'taken' by a wolf from their yard!!

Any stats on Parrot or cockatiel bites at the CDC (those little buggers can be vicious too!)?

Those are the most adorable pix, and those little babies are as cute as buttons.

My daughter has loved this breed for a long time, and swears when she gets a place of her own she wants a westie. I had read they were stubborn, and comparable to a scottie when it comes to be bull headed. She's read of a rescue org. in the Tulsa area that she's interested in contacting when she's ready. If you wouldn't mind, could you freepmail me the web site, my daughter would just melt into a puddle of drool.

I'm a schnauzer mama, so I'm used to those little "diggers" :-)
