Cleveland Plain Dealer Declares War on Citizens of Ohio.

Cleveland Plain Dealer Declares War on Citizens of Ohio. I am not exaggerating when I say that this story is truly disturbing. The Cleveland Plain Dealer has just stated that it will publish the names and addresses of every person who avails themselves of Ohio's new concealed carry permit law and applies for such a permit.

The editors of the Plain Dealer explained thusly:

Journalists will be able to access permit information because of their profession. But you - as a doctor, lawyer or factory worker - won't be able to determine whether your neighbor or ex-husband has obtained a permit.

That sort of exclusion is neither fair nor rational public policy.

Since Taft chooses to hide behind journalists on this vital public-records matter, it is this newspaper's intention to obtain this information and publish it. Our readers deserve to know the identities of those who obtain permits to carry their guns in public. We hope other news organizations will do the same in their communities.

Taft and the legislature are demonstrating a flagrant disregard for the public's right to know. It is incumbent upon the news media to help right their wrong.

Permit-holders' names and addresses in print, because you have the "right to know".

I see.

Oddly enough, neither the Plain Dealers' owner, Don Newhouse, nor the editor responsible for the piece, Douglas Clifton, chose not to sign their names to their explicit threat against the citizens of Ohio. Nor did they choose to share their home addresses and telephone numbers with the public.

In the spirit of the public's "right to know", I will be happy to publish the owner's/editors' home addresses and phone numbers here and ensure their widespread distribution, should the newspaper ever follow through with the amazing threats they are making against the people of Ohio. In addition, should the newspaper force it on me, I will be happy to share information about Newhouse's other holdings, such as his stakes (and family stakes) in other businesses in your area that are dependent on the general public's good will

If these are public records, then they're probably within their rights--otherwise this is a privacy violation.

In terms of public relations, this is a disaster for the P.D.

In terms of logic--logic? We don't need no steenkin' logic!

People exercising their second amendment rights--that's not newsworthy.

A newspaper protesting the exercise of the second amendment and working against its readers--that's newsworthy..

I'm ashamed for the city of my birth. ;(

"Cleveland Plain Dealer Declares War on Citizens of Ohio."

And you expect what from a city which elected Dennis Kucinich as its mayor? Not to mention Ralph Perk, the mayor who set his hair on fire.

This is really horrifying and may very well lead to breaking and entering to find guns in the home.

Perhaps all new CCW holders should march on the Plain Dealer's offices and stage a protest outside.

I bet you'd get to see a bunch of liberal reporters who are scared of guns wet themselves...

Looks to me like the paper is starting a Do Not Rob, Armed Occupant list. If I was in Ohio, I'd sign up.

But we don't have "a right to know" the journalists' sources for their stories when they want to conceal them.

Golly, it must be fun to be as incredibly important as a journalist.

LOL! I lived in Clevetown when that happened. Too funny. Ended Ralphie's political career.

That is the big concern, and I suspect why the that RINO Taft had it put into the bill. More theft of weapons and of course crime associated with it. Then see, concealed carry laws don't work, we need more gun control will be the mantra. The facts will be distorted to the highest point of hysteria possible. The P.D. will be first in line. These Bolsheviks are so transparent.

That commie rag has no circulation around my area. Who cares what they print? When I was in the motel bidness I put up a sign with a big bore revolver on it, and it said, "the proprietor of this establishment is armed at all times. There is absolutely nothing here worth dying for."

Never had the first problem. Let em print the good news!

Such a threat has been made before in a small town newspaper, according to the web site www.packing.org. The threat was followed by a tremendous outflow of invective toward the publisher and everyone else associated with that paper. Result? They placed their collective tails between their legs, backed down, and never made the threat again.

Looks like this could be a similar situation, just on a larger scale.

From the editorial in question (http://www.cleveland.com/editorials/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/opinion/1073557994158462.xml): Our readers deserve to know the identities of those who obtain permits to carry their guns in public.

Wrong answer.

Just damn.

If you want on the list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...

1) An editorial is the opinion of the entire paper and thus does not need to be signed.

2) It looks like Clevelanders need to come together and create an alternative newspaper.

Accident.

"Or maybe the factory where mayor Ralph Perk set his hair on fire while showing blue collar voters that he too knew how to use a blow torch."

Ancient Ohio

There are a million sources. This was just the first one I came upon.
