Resignation comes as city settles suit over her 'hate group' comments.

The Fresno Human Relations Commission chairwoman who called a local conservative organization a "hate group" resigned as the city reached a lawsuit settlement over her comments.

Debbie Reyes announced her resignation through an e-mail that was read Thursday evening at the commission meeting.

"It's cheaper to pay these guys $20 and get rid of them than waste an attorney's time on them," Castillo said.

This is the sort of comment that makes a "done deal" fall apart.

"On Tuesday, the City Council discussed the lawsuit in closed session. Doerksen and Castillo said the sides agreed to a settlement."

A "closed session" all for 20 bucks?

"It's just too bad the dollars paid don't come directly from her and not the taxpayers of Fresno."

Wouldn't it make quite a statement about FReepers and FR if the money was divided equally among Fresno residents and returned to them? Sort of a conservative statement on tax relief that would be sure to win lots of press!!!

(Forgive me, I'm a marketing manager - this is just the way my mind works!!!)

Cool, the Viking Kitties now have enough money for some extra Troll Chow this week.

Having eaten well, they must now sleep.

"It's cheaper to pay these guys $20 and get rid of them than waste an attorney's time on them," Castillo said.

Neither Doerksen nor Castillo would say how much money was involved in the agreement.

These two statements do appear to be inconsistant. If there is a nondisclosure clause in the settlement agreeement, and it sounds like there is, perhaps the city and Mr. Castillo need to be called to task for violating it.

Good news !

Reyes did not attend the meeting, but her e-mail said that she stepped down "due to a recent career opportunity that will require a great amount of my time and attention."

Her resignation came in the wake of the city reaching a settlement agreement this week with the conservative group Free Republic.

Charles Doerksen, Free Republic's lawyer, said the city agreed to retract Reyes' comments and pay money to Free Republic.

"As to her resignation, Watergate broke and Nixon resigned and maybe that was a coincidence and maybe this is a coincidence, too," Doerksen said.

I agree. If the settlement hasn't been signed yet, it should not be signed until Castillo apologizes publicly. If it has been signed, we should walk right back into court and charge them with violating the nondisclosure clause.

Then you get him to get his ass over to the court and file the papers for the suit. The nondisclosure was violated... I imagine not truthfully but for all intents it has. File the suit.
