Has anybody started an email/letter writing campaign in response to the president's proposed immigration initiative?

We need to show the president that he can't take advantage of his conservative base.

But I actually think that these hardliners were killed off, or at least relegated to irrelevance, by the Reagan revolution.

Headliners hate people, and love ideology, Reagan hated ideologies, but loved the people.

Reagan believed that America was unique because people could go to France, but never become French, or go to Germany, but never become German, but anyone could come to America and become an American. Hard liners believe they own America, that no one else can stake a claim to what they own, and if they could, would turn us into France, Germany, or some other decaying society (thanks WW).

They've been irrelevant for decades, and California was the ultimate proof.

There will be as long as Mexico keeps itself in the position it's in --- if it would come up to US and Canadian standards, allow for a strong healthy middle class, millions wouldn't have to be part of this "human capital". That is useful to those who want a lot of desperate people so they can have cheap labor which enhances their profits. I think it would be better for our leaders to start pushing for the reforms needed so instead of utter poverty, these people would have something else in their own country.

Strike Two.

Bush is proposing a totalization agreement with Mexico, patterned after the twenty or so other totalization agreements that the U.S. has entered into with other countries since the 1970's. The GAO fears that the estimates of the total payments reached by the Bush administration are not accurate, because they fail to take into consideration undocumented (read illegal) immigrants.

In other words, Bush did not include them in his estimates because he has no intention of paying them any money.

By the way, did you happen to notice twhat the World Net Daily had to say about this?

"Social Security Administration officials estimate about 50,000 Mexicans would collect $78 million in the first year of a U.S.-Mexican agreement. By 2050, the number is predicted to swell to 300,000 Mexicans collecting $650 million in benefits a year."

But that number doesn't include the potentially eligible, undocumented Mexican immigrants – numbering about 5 million, according to federal estimates – a recent General Accounting Office report pointed out.

The reason Bush did not "say" anything of the sort, so, you're putting words in his mouth, making you the only one baiting anyone.

I can't disagree with that. Unfortunately it's also a move that directly shafts middle class Americans.

Send him all the cards and flowers you want. The vast majority of Americans don't approve of illegals and are tired of them taking advantage. Jorge may have made a bold move, but increasing the number of parasites on the welfare state can never be a wise move.

You can go to congress.org, find the link to stopping amnesty for illegal immigrants, type in your zip code which will bring up a list of your representatives in Washington and proceed from there. I just did it and added a personal touch to the message. I sincerely hope this very bad idea gets nipped in the bud!

I remember reading something about Tancredo suggesting a guest worker program --- so far Bush's proposals are pretty vague --- it seems that there is still room for modifications and other ideas.

I think it would have been better to not say 8 million would get some kind of blue card or legal status. Some of those 8 million are likely working in jobs that Americans would have gladly taken and there needs to be more recruiting in some of our poor neighborhoods where unemployment is high before recruiters are sent to Mexico.

In contrast to this lame claim, this is the flavor of his entire presidency to me, as it's overwhelmed the joy I felt at his defeat of Gore, and the pride I felt when he dealt with 9/11 so well, and the approval I felt on some of his legislative efforts. It's not just a negative poke, like the education bill. It's not just a matter of concern, like the Patriot Act.

This is a huge betrayal of conservative (and libertarian) principles. Rewarding the army of illegal parasites currently abusing our social services is simply awful.

Jorge hasn't "solved" a blasted thing - unless you feel not interfering between a rapist and your wife is "solving" the crime. Are you a "lay back and enjoy it" advocate?

It's called, "A BOLD APPROACH".
I disagree with it of course, and for the same reason that you have so very well stated!
But the biggest problem for me is the use of tax payer's funds that are used for the purpose of buying the Hispanic vote.
IT is such a transparent plan that it will not achieve the desired results on either account, and may indeed backfire on GW if it should pass in the congress!

My plan would be to probably have some kind of guest worker status --- maybe not a new program --- but maybe admit some of the agricultural workers to work --- and if their jobs are only seasonal then they would go back home on off-seasons. There would have to some kind of plan for who would pay their health care costs and I would have the non-working families members stay home where they can attend schools that don't cost us an arm and a leg.

I doubt there is much need for factory workers --- so that type of job wouldn't need guest workers.

Those illegals and legals who have already proved themselves to be irresponsible types --- committed other crimes like DWI, shoplifting, unpaid hospital bills etc should be deported.

Maybe that's what you should ask of everyone --- some believe no guest workers at all are needed --- and that every illegal needs to be hunted down and deported. I don't see that working and I don't believe that's necessary either. I just don't believe making them all legal and giving them cards that allow them to cross the border anytime they wish is necessary. I'll admit Bush's proposals are very vague --- and as they say the devil is in the details.

Taxpayers pay for the HIV and TB regardless of whether the immigrants are paying into the system or not. It certainly is in our nation's interest to see that disease doesn't spread, and that human suffering is addressed.
