[history]
According to Sid Rosenburg, the Sports guy on the Imus in the Morning program, the Redskins are set to make an announcement today that the former Redskins Coach will be returning to be the new head coach.
Update:
Just a week after Steve Spurrier called it quits, the Washington Redskins have a new coach their old one. Joe Gibbs agreed Wednesday to take charge of the struggling franchise. Gibbs coached the team from 1981-92, winning three Super Bowls along the way before resigning to pursue a career with his own NASCAR team. [link to source]

What credentials does Gibbs have for politics? He's won the Winston Cup twice!
From what I understand of the south that is credentials enough for anything he chooses to do.

Y'know, talking about Jacoby, this'll tell you how much football has changed in just fifteen years.
Joe Jacoby was 6'6", 305 pounds. Every play-by-play and color commentator mentioned what a monster he was, with his size. He was, I believe, the only Hog that ever went 300+ on the scale.
Nowadays, 6'6" and 305 would be an average, or even smaller, offensive tackle on most teams. And that 305+ pound tackle would be faster and more mobile than Jacoby ever was.
A 305-pound lineman has gone from freakishly big to "eh, he's not so huge" in just 15 years! Amazing!

But it used to be Thiesman. He changed it in college in order to make his name sound more like the Heisman trophy. (at his dad's suggestion after they mispelled his name in a report somewhere) Ya know, I heard that story but never knew if it was actually true.

"Should be interesting the next few seasons!!!" Yep, I can't wait. Of course, I'd gotten excited about Schottenheimer and Spurrier gettin' hired, too, but Gibbs is simply a legend with extraordinary skills and I firmly believe he'll have the Skins headin' in the right direction--i.e. competin' fer the Super Bowl--in short order!!

"...aren't the Skins going to get in trouble with the NFL for violating Johnnie Cochran's Token Rule?" Naww, we went through the motions of interviewing Denny Green and Ray Rhodes (an unfair rigamarole to put those good folks thru, imho) to keep from facing the wrath of the PC NFL folks.

Speaking of Dexter Manley....I recall he appeared on Capitol Hill once to testify about his being passed along in the educational system all his life...not being able to read or write...simply because he was a star athelete. As I recall...the Skins drafted him out of Oklahoma State.Who was coaching at Oklahoma St. back then......was it none other than Jimmy Johnson?
To: sinkspur
No actually, the Skins are the most valuable franchise in SPORTS.

People go on and on about Snyder, but I wonder if they can actually cite instances?
Can they?
Do they know he concurred with my desire that we draft Patrick Ramsey? That was HIS pick, not Spurrier's, not even Cerrato's.
The fact is people talk a good deal about "temper tantrums" but they have little to back it up with. I would agree that Norv Turner shouldn't have been fired until after the end of 2000. But in all honesty, he should have been fired the year before, but Snyder gave in to the cries for "fairness."
And what mouth? When? For what? To who?
Redskins and Snyder-haters sound like BUSH-haters, they really do.

Granted, they liked to party, and the players were fixtures at local clubs and bars, but we never heard about Redskins players at double murders, blowing away their pregnant girlfriends, dealing drugs, beating the crap out of each other in practice, pulling Sharpies out of their socks, etc. Probably because those were all Dallas Cowboys doing all that stuff :)

Gee, give me some time to compile the list! I stopped after perusing the first 33 pages of search results from Google, and that was only with one search (Dallas Cowboy arrest). So, here you are:
DB Dwayne Goodrich, felony manslaughter after killing two people while driving through an accident scene at 110 mph, Jan. 2003
OL Nate Newton, arrested with 213 lbs of marijuana in November 2001, and then with 175 lbs the following month
DL Harvey Martin, arrested after a crack binge for assaulting his girlfriend, Aug. 1996, his third arrest in five months for the same crime
WR Lance Rentzel, arrested for exposing himself to a 10-year old girl, November 1970
PK Rafael Septien, arrested for sexually assaulting a 10-year old girl, January 1987
WR Bob Hayes served 10 months in jail for selling drugs following his arrest in 1979
DL Larry Bethea was arrested for assaulting his estranged wife in 1986, then charged for stealing $64,000 from his mothers home, then committed suicide in April 1987
OL Mark Tuinei, found dead from a heroin overdose in his car less than a year after being cut from the team, after spending a night on the town with Cowboy reserve FB Nicky Sualua, May 1999
LB Thomas Hollywood Henderson, arrested and charged with sexual assault and false imprisonment after exchanging crack for sex with two minors, one of whom was wheelchair-bound
Coach Barry Switzer arrested for trying to board an aircraft with a loaded revolver, August 1997
WR Michael Irvin with several arrests, the most famous one involving a retired Dallas player, two "self-employed models," and a great deal of cocaine and marijuana, and a fight in training camp in which he slashed Everitt McIver's throat, and the victim was paid off by Owner Jerry Jones to stay quiet
Emmitt Smith, arrested for drunk driving
Owner Jerry Jones, arrested for fleeing the scene while a police officer was still writing a ticket
DL Leon Lett, with five violations of the NFL substance abuse policy and suspensions totaling over twenty games
RB Sherman Williams, arrested for conspiracy in a counterfeiting and drug trafficking ring, April 2000
LB Darren Hambrick, arrested for resisting arrest after being pulled over for speeding
WR Alvin Harper, arrested while in possession of two stolen vehicles
OL Erik Williams avoided trial by settling out of court with a 17-year old girl after allegations of sexual assault
RB Larry Brown, a former Super Bowl MVP, was released from jail after agreeing to pay back $44,000 in bad checks he had written to several Las Vegas casinos
CB Clayton Holmes, suspended for drug abuse, 1995
CB Dexter Clinkscale was charged with sexually assaulting an 18-year old man, April 1998
Now, show me a list of 21 players from another NFL team charged with manslaughter, large-scale drug trafficking, sexual assault of minors and 18-year old boys, etc. I know that not all of these arrests occured during their playing days in Dallas, but it does show a pattern of Cowboys' players character.

I know that not all of these arrests occured during their playing days in Dallas, but it does show a pattern of Cowboys' players character. LOL!! You say that the "rot goes back decades." All but five of the names you give me played in the last ten years, long after Landry was gone. Of the five who played under Landry, three "violations" occurred after they left the team.
I'm not about to defend the Cowboys under Jerry Jones. He allowed clowns such as Switzer and Campo to tolerate outright criminals like Erik Williams.
But let's can the hyperbole on the Landry era.

If you think the Cowboys were clean in the Landry era, its only in comparison to the Mafioso days under Jones & Co. Things were kept under the carpet much more efficiently in the old days!

Things were kept under the carpet much more efficiently in the old days! Yes they were, which is why your singling out of the Cowboys is all the more ludicrous.

What credentials does Gibbs have for politics? You were just joking, right? A number of answers come to mind but my first thought is, what credentials do any of them there now have? Besides, I don't believe the Constitution says anything about credentials.
What does Joe Gibbs have? Leadership and integrity.

When it comes to unsavory behavior by football players in the good old days I have only two words to add to the conversation: Lyle Alzado.

Here is your list of Redskins from a quick search.
Jermaine Haley- DUI May 2003
Mike Sellers- DUI and Drugs 2001
Daryl Russell- 20 counts of rape and suspended by NFL for substance abuse 2001. DUI in 1999
Bruce Smith - DUI 1996
Dexter Manley - Drugs many times, the latest being 2003
Skip Hicks- Illegally having a handicap sticker. Found drugs in car. 2001
Christian Peter- Beating his girlfriend 1997, Drunk and disorderly 1998, Assault 1999
Kenyata Jones - Burning his roommate 2003
Lional Dalton - Drugs and DUI 2002
Daryl Gardner - Drugs 1998
Barry Wilburn - Armed Robbery 2001
Terry Allen - Felony evading law enforcement and DUI 1997
Michael Westbrook - assault 1999
Ray McDonald - Having sex with a man in public 1968
Jerry Smith - soliciting prostitute(male prostitute)1970
Dana Stubblefield - beating his wife 2000
Raphel Cherry - convicted of murder (strangled his wife) 1999
Reggie Coleman - Drugs 2001
Coy Bacon - Drugs and weapons 1983
Laverneous Coles - Shoplifting 1999
There is your list of 21 or more players. I would consider murder to trump a few of the Cowboys chargers. Not all of these players were arrested as Deadskin players. Some were in college and after their playing days in the NFL. I thought your team was the one who never kept shady characters around? Geez, now Mr Kettle meet Mr Pot.
