Mullah Krekar arrested

Mullah Krekar, the controversial former leader of the Kurdish guerilla group Ansar al-Islam based in Northern Iraq, was arrested on Friday afternoon in his apartment in Oslo's central Toeyen district. Krekar will be charged with complicity in a suicide attack according to newspaper VG's web site.

Citing "centrally placed sources", VG reported that Oekokrim had expanded charges against Krekar to include a suicide attack carried out by Ansar al-Islam in Northern Iraq.

Oekokrim has gathered information via electronic surveillance that they believe links mullah Krekar to recent Ansar al-Islam activities.

Krekar has officially stated that he no longer leads or has contact with the Kurdish guerrilla group.

According to a statement released by Oekokrim on their web site, they will recommend that Krekar be remanded in custody for four weeks with all communication monitored. Attorney-general Erling Grimstad will be in charge of the prosecution.

"I was informed by attorney-general Erling Grimstad at 1:15 pm this afternoon that mullah Krekar was to be arrested. He is already at the Oslo police headquarters," Krekar's counsel Brynjar Meling told newspaper Dagbladet's web site.

Oekokrim, Norway's Economic Crime Unit, which has been investigating various charges against Krekar, had reportedly issued a five-page indictment outlining grounds for the new charges.

Meling was en route to Oslo from Stavanger and said that he would be studying the charges during the flight.

This marks the second time Krekar has been arrested by Norwegian police.

According to Dagbladet there was a large police presence outside Krekar's home where officers were conducting a search of his apartment.

I see options here, we disable their cable to their apartments. They come outside to see how their illegal boxes stopped working and we nab them!
