Arctic Dig Unearths Prehistoric Settlement
The Baltimore Sun ^ | January 2, 2004 | Dennis O'Brien

Russian archaeologists have discovered the remains of the world's oldest known Arctic settlement - a Siberian riverfront site that they say could help determine when humans first arrived in the Americas. The 30,000-year-old site - twice as old as any previous Arctic dig - includes a rhinoceros bone shaped into a spear that shows a "striking resemblance" to spear points found by archaeologists in Clovis, N.M.

Wasn't the Petuniasevan period before the Molassic and after the Borasic periods?

Interesting. Unfortunate no photographic materials available. The Japanese aborigine, Ainu, skull measurement study interesting also.

They're saying stone points found at this 30,000 yo Siberian site have a similarity to Clovis points. Proof of the mighty Clovis hunter theory? Clovis points all date from 11,500 - 10,500 years ago. Solutrean tools & culture was 18,000 years ago.

The Bering land bridge 'traditionalists' have been getting their butts kicked in the last few years because the Clovis and Solutrean (Iberia) technology are the closest in style and shape.
That data point suggests that Clovis and Solutrean may have originated in Iberia and consequently suggests an Atlantic crossing.

This is the first 'hint' of Clovis in the Siberian region which supports the Bering Land Bridge theory.

"The Japanese aborigine, Ainu, skull measurement study interesting also."

My son and I went to see the movie The Last Samurai when he was here Christmas. I told him on the way to the movie that I was gonna be disappointed if The Last Samurai was not a tall guy. Turns out he was one of the tallest in the whole movie.

Many (including me)believe the Ainu of Japan were the original Samurai and that the Japanese practice of 'white face' is emulating these early royals.
The most honored of all the Samurai (forgot his name) was over six feet tall and was the one who started the 'honorable' practice of Harakiri.(sp)

In most of Alaska/Canada any site over 200 years old could be cosidered prehistoric. In Fairbanks, any site before 1903 would be prehistoric.

Got for Christmas and finished reading The First Americans by Dr J M Adovasio, published 2002 (so pretty recent stuff in here). Adovasio is the archaeologist who directed the Meadowcroft Shelter site in Pennsylvania, and found pre-11,500 yo tools (up to 16,000 yo). He also helped at Cactus Hill, Va., Topper in SC, and Windover in Fla. He really put the hurt on the "Clovis only Beringian hunters" theory. He also discussed a length the "Down the Pacific via boat" theory but seemed to dismiss (for lack of evidence only) the "Solutrean across the Atlantic ice" theory. Very good read if you're interested.
