US confirms uranium seizure By Matthew Lee in Washington January 1, 2004
THE United States today confirmed it had led an operation to seize uranium enrichment components from a German freighter headed for Libya that may have sealed Tripoli's decision to publicly renounce weapons of mass destruction this month.
"A ship was diverted based on intelligence it was carrying centrifuge parts in early October," State Department spokesman Adam Ereli told reporters, calling it "a significant and important development".
He declined to discuss specifics of the operation - details of which were first reported in The Wall Street Journal and confirmed to AFP by senior US officials - but said it showed the value of the US-led Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI).
"What this incident shows is that the PSI is robust, producing results, fulfilling the mission for which it was intended," Ereli said.
PSI was launched by US President George W Bush earlier this year to prevent the spread of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons

I hope our government was not naive about Libya!
He knows nussing... *Nussing*!
permissible for poster to add own subtitle in parenthesis but not to alter published title; hence, the following: [Libya - German freighter...]
Please pay attention since you're in such a snit about a lame title. Are you so arrogant to think the rest of us reading the article in its entirety are too stupid to see that the published title is misleading? The title promises more than the article delivers. So what? Pitch your bitch to the publisher. He can change his title, FR cannot.
Wrong again. It can be changed in the same manor that Sub-Driver changed the title when he posted this thread.
"Are you so arrogant to think the rest of us reading the article in its entirety are too stupid to see that the published title is misleading"
Two posters to this thread mistook the article to be about uranium and not uranium enrichment components. Are they "stupid"? Maybe you should convey that opinion of yours to them. Moreover, you can bet that most of those who chose to view this thread for the first time, came to the thread thinking that the article was going to be about a uranium seizure. BTW, the title is not just "misleading", it is totally false.
You can keep throwing your goofy hissy-fit all day long and denying the evidence that's right in front of your nose, frankly I don't care. But it won't change the fact that even this thread title shows that it is perfectly permissible to alter the title in the manner that S-D did. And that's all that it would have taken to change a factually false title, to an accurate one.

ATOM-TRANSPORT German Freighter To Have Been Bringing Uranium-Equipment to Libya Libya's announcement to stop development of nuclear weapons was preceded by a large-scale secret operation: American services had stopped, with German and Italian help, a German freighter which shall have been taking thousands of components for uranium enrichment to Tripoli. The ship had already traversed the Suez Canal. Washington: A spokesman for the U.S. State Department confirmed a corresponding report with these details in the "Wall Street Journal" on Wednesday. The paper reported, referring to government sources, the material had been on a German freighter underway from a gulf state port to Libya when it was seized in October. "On the basis of secret service information, a ship was stopped which was transporting parts for centrifuges (for uranium enrichment)", the spokesperson said. Neither he nor the government sources gave any details as to who had sold the equipment to Libya. Thousands of centrifuge parts shall have been found on the ship. American and British Intelligence services had found out in September, says the "Wall Street Journal" that the freighter named "BBC China" had taken the provocative cargo on board in the Persian Gulf and was supposed to bring it to Libya. With that, they contacted German authorities, who, in turn, contacted the ship's owner. The shipping company ordered the captain, who had just sailed through the Suez Canal, to put in at an Italian port. The ship was shadowed by U.S.warship there, and the cargo was searched. The North-African country had surprisingly recently announced it would stop its program for the development of nuclear weapons and would allow far-reaching international controls. Enriched uranium can be used for the production of nuclear weapons. The government spokesman didn't draw any direct connection between the seizure and the later proclamation by the country, describing the stopping of the delivery to Libya as a "significant and important development" on the way to the withdrawal of the country from its nuclear weapon development program. Negotiations concerning the country's atomic program had already been taking place for months between Libya and the USA, as well as Great Britain, he said. The newspaper had reported, referring to government sources, that Libya only opened its atom facilities to the USA and Great Britain after the discovery of the delivery. © SPIEGEL ONLINE 2004 "Spiegel-Online"....Deutscher Frachter sollte Uran-Ausrüstung nach Libyen bringen

German authorities were then notified and shortly after the BBC China cleared the Suez Canal, they informed the shipowner, which then instructed the captain to change course for Italy, the officials said.
So it´s Germanys fault??? Guys, Germany doesn´t want the US to be harmed.
A successful, healthy and happy Year 2K+4,
Michael
You don't want the US to be harmed. Some Germans do want the US to be harmed. I hope people like you are able to take back your country before it is too late. The terrorists did not set up shop in Hamburg for nothing. Have a safe and blessed year.
"That was the title used by the paper or website that reported it. That is how FR works."Nope, that is incorrect.
If you need proof of that, just look at the FR title at the top of this page and you will see that, it too, has been altered from the original story title. Obviously then, that kind of alteration of the FR title is completely within FR posting guidelines.
And that's all I ever wanted AM to do: To alter it by adding words such as "enrichment components" (in parentheses, of course) to the original story title so that it would no longer falsely misrepresent the subject of the thread.
As a result of the misleading FR title, at least two posters were deceived into believing the thread was about a uranium seizure and two others, besides myself, also complained about the misleading title.
If you are still having a hard time getting a grasp on this concept, then I invite you to read and learn from AM's own words: "You can append the original with (whatever you like within reason) in parenthesis."
Hope that information untwists your panties a bit!
