Thanks to Kalifornia's retrofitted buildings and roads, that quake in the Central part of the state lost 2 lives (sadly), not the 10's of thousands that usually succomb when a large (and 6.5 is a pretty big one) earthquake shakes buildings made of mud and sand.
Nope, it's mainly that San Simeon was in the middle of nowhere and Bam apparently took place in the center of a densely-populated small city.
If it had happened directly under downtown LA or San Jose or Berkeley, while it likely wouldn't have killed tens of thousands, we'd be talking about hundreds killed and a bigger economic disaster than 9/11.
People should not get overconfident. The Japanese were when looking at Loma Prieta and Northridge, prior to Kobe. They thought they were prepared and had this earthquake thing figured out, compared to those silly Americans. They didn't.

Right. Anyway, the 3.2 and the 3.5 are small. Most would miss it altogether unless they are sitting watching TV or FR. Don't worry about missing the BIG ONE.

felt it here in Eagle Rock quite strong. Daughter lives in La Verne and felt it really strong out there too...hope these aren't pre- cursors for a bigger one...sigh.Had three friends over, all agreed it seemed different than other quakes. Very explosive like, only lasting about 1 or 2 seconds....Hard to describe, but it felt like it was an above ground event....

Sitting in Alaska we get to see a fair amount of earthquake activity, such as the 7.5 last spring. Maybe we are just well-instrumented. The 6.5 in Cal was the start of a LOT of shaking by comparison.

Nothing in my part of Alabama either.

The Japanese were when looking at Loma Prieta and Northridge, prior to Kobe. They thought they were prepared and had this earthquake thing figured out, compared to those silly Americans. They didn't. That's for sure. IIRC, most of the deaths in the Northridge quake came from the apartment building on Reseda Blvd. There was another one (or 2) at the Northridge mall.
For the magnitude of that quake, and for the density of that area, the casualty count could have been much greater. Thankfully it was not.
Which brings up a point though. Time of day, where most people are active and out and about, can affect the rate of casualties. Was the quake in Bam during daylight hours?

most of the deaths in the Northridge quake came from the apartment building A lot of injuries were from TVs falling on legs of reclining viewers. In bed.

No, just the roar from the stadium. :)
Beat the Raiders and still get to pick FIRST in NFL draft, thanks to AZ's for also winning today.
Eli Manning --- they'd better pick him. :)

Maybe you've not been here. Trust me friend, I've been there and all over the northwest, and the planet for that matter. Cold places are nice to visit in the summer. Nothing worse to me than dealing with cold, wet, and that icy stuff. Been there done that. Never ever again.
Stay warm.

5:30 in the morning, local time. Trapped in poorly built buildings and houses by our standards.
Bad scene either way, and it sounds like the casualty count is steadily rising, sadly.
