WASHINGTON President Bush's overwhelming strength among white men looms as a central obstacle between Democrats and the White House as 2004 approaches.
In an election season heavily shaped by terrorism and national security, several recent polls suggest Bush could dominate white male voters as thoroughly as Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush did during their three successive presidential victories in the 1980s.
White men compose just under 40% of the electorate, with white women just over 40%, and minorities composing the rest.

Oh? and what's the prize of the challenge?
What will you give me if I go through the effort of finding and transcribing the sequence of comments, showing that you have indeed made that claim?
Will you at long last find your manners?
Will you swear on your life to address the points which are raised instead of attacking what you believe to be the motives of the author?
What?
I don't work for free.
Showing you up is not in itself good enough.

Your REAL "brothers" are us honkies here. How do the Poverty Pimps get away with hiding the reality that the RAT party fought for slavery, fought against any political advancement for Blacks, fought against treating Black people with common decency, fought against education for Blacks and, in fact, fought against everything that America was claimed to stand for from 1790 to the present day?
The RAT party has consistently been the Black persons worst enemy.

I appreciate the effort, but I asked for Bush's list of Conservative accomplishments.
Many of those actions on the list are not what one would consider Conservative or at least their price tags aren't.
For instance, those tax cuts weren't accompanied by a spending cut or even a spending freeze. They were accompanied by the largest increase in spending in U.S. History and the largest authorization in new federal debt., $1 trillion dollars.
Those tax cuts were all smoke and mirrors. They were really a $1 trillion dollar loan at interest.
Workplace verification of employability is all voluntary. There's no teeth in the legislation. The employers that are careful not to hire illegals will continue to be diligent. This bill won't make a damn bit of difference to the biggest offenders and Bush doesn't care, either.
Question: Has illegal immigration increased or decreased under Bush?
Question: Are there more or less military troops on the borders assisting the Border Patrol in keeping these Marxist/Socialist future voters out now, under Bush?
Thanks, but I'll be voting for gridlock next September just the same.

There is no UneXploded Ordnance anywhere on Roosevelt Roads Naval Base. Only a 2-mile-long runway with airport facilities, Hotel, Hospital, Golf Course, 1,100 buildings, 9 Piers in a harbor you can dock an aircraft carrier in, Jails, Water Filtration Plants, Power Generation Plants, miles of roads, plumbing, electrical and communications infrastructure, miles of prime beaches and the corrupt politicians got the whole 11,000 acres fenced for free.
You better believe the Puerto Rican ingrates think it was "just beautiful", too and that we Gringos are suckers.
As far as Vieques goes, wait until you see the amount of U.S. Taxpayers dollars the EPA spends cleaning up imagined Naval training related polution all over that tiny island.
We were suckered on that deal, too.

#131: This is the only common sense solution, that is why Bush, Ridge, Arnold Schwarzenegger are throwing up some of these trial balloons.
Interesting. FO, you spent the better part of the Recall campaign denying that Schwarzenegger was for Amnesty. When I demonstrated that he was not being honest, and that his protestations notwithstanding, Schwarzenegger clearly was pro-Illegal Alien, you'd have none of it. So, this is a different tune for you. Quite frankly, Amnesty is only a solution if you think the problem is that we have a border and not enough Illegals. We can not stop a behavior by rewarding it. GOP apologists for the coming Bush Amnesty remind me of the Clinton apologists who defended his fundrasing violations by saying "clearly, the system is broken, so let's make new laws." Meanwhile, the criminals were not held to account. #131: But beyond that, if we don't send all illegals back to where they came from, and as I said, we can't reasonably do that, it is better if they are legalized here, than to be part of a sub-culture. I think the reason the amnesty during Reagan didn't work is because they didn't close the borders at the same time. But if you do both, then people would adjust and it would solve the problem
They aren't going to do both. That's going to be nowhere in the plan. There are a few reasons why not, primary among them is that the problem at the border results from malfeasant, bipartisan non-enforcement of our immigration laws in the American Interior. If there was enforcement, we wouldn't have the Illegal Alien problem for which Amnesty is falsely trumpeted as a solution. Politicians of both parties, including the three Republicans you mentioned above, lack the ethical spine to enforce our laws against Illegals, and letting them get away with more Amnesty-pandering isn't going to evolve them into political vertebrates on immigration matters. Just as Amnesty rewards Illegal Aliens, and will encourage more of that bad behavior, allowing the political elites to get away with offering an Amnesty as a solution to a problem entirely caused by their own malfeasance will only encourage more of their bad behavior. #143: Basically you have two choices: 1. Keep railing against illegal immigration, attack Republicans for not doing enough, which results in electing Democrats who actually encourage it and are making laws handing out your hard earned money. 2. Support Republicans who come up with REASONABLE, REALISTIC solutions to the problem. Please read my post 59 & 131 .
So many false premises here. Those aren't the only two choices. Holding politicians of our own party accountable when they propose rotten policies and legislation is our duty. It's what's supposed to seperate Republicans from Democrats. Your solutions aren't reasonable or realistic, the caps lock key notwithstanding. Amnesty will make every problem associated with Illegals worse in the near, mid, and long-term, and will lead to civil war within the Repbulican Party as a bonus. You want realism? That's the stark reality. You want fury and division in the GOP in 2004? Then don't read any further, just keep pretending that we have no choice with Illegals but appeasement and surrender. Or... #143: Instead of a temper tantrum and accusations, why don't you tell us, what is YOUR REALISTIC SOLUTION?
Well there are so many that I've started keeping a list. I need to be a bit more diligent, however, and keep better track of the solutions, because my list only has eighteen concrete proposals, and I'm sure there are others. The first order of business, of course, is to enforce existing laws on the books against Illegals and those who employ them. Politicians must be held to account when they pander otherwise. Then...
- 1: Eliminate all mention of Section 245(i), even if expired, from the US Immigration and Naturalization Code. No more Amnesty, ever.
- 2: Get legislation through Congress that would enable States to deny goodies to Illegals, a la Prop #187.
- 3: Outlaw Mexican matricula consular IDs, and kick banks accepting them out of the FDIC. Legal depositors will withdraw from recalcitrant banks.
- 4: Beef up Border Security with manpower, resources, and a Volunteer Reserve, if necessary. No troops, and no messing with posse comitatus, this should be a civilian effort.
- 5: Beef up the immigration courts and set deportation hearings for two weeks after apprehension, with no bail.
- 6: Run sting operations at day laborer sites.
- 7: Establish two-way communication between the IRS and Border Security, and start apprehending and deporting Illegals using false SS numbers (no, the current overhyped voluntary program doesn't count).
- 8: Seize the assets of businesses knowingly hiring Illegals under the RICO Act, as they are ongoing criminal enterprises. Prosecute executives who knowingly hire Illegals.
- 9: Compile biometric information on Illegals, and declare that they will be permanently ineligible for immigration and citizenship.
- 10: If the United States declares that the above proposals against Illegals will be diligently enforced after a certain date, many Illegals will leave beforehand, and a relatively small number of well-publicized cases of enforcement throughout the Lower 48 will result in millions of Illegals deporting themselves.
- 11: End the busting of immigration caps by limiting family reunification to spouses and dependent children, and counting them against the caps when they are brought in. Require all future immigrants to declare their future intent to bring in family upon arrival. This way, families can immigrate in a controlled, orderly fashion without the current deceptions being used against the American public. We must have truth in immigration.
- 12: Outlaw anchor babies, and give the option to the Illegal parent of taking the child with them upon deportation, or putting them up for adoption.
- 13: Outlaw bilingual ballots, and resume the English-speaking requirements for citizenship.
- 14: Establish English skills as a prerequisite for future immigrants. Let's start admitting folks who will hit the ground running toward assimilation.
- 15: Shut off new immigration to nations that offer dual citizenship. Disqualify current immigrants from those nations from future American citizenship.
- 16: Make Mexico and Central America our cheap import sources of choice with tariffs on manufacturing from other sources, especially China.
- 17: In return, Mexico must open up to American investment by allowing the sale of real estate to us and guaranteeing property our rights. Getting Mexico to fix its economy is crucial.
- 18: Establish a guest worker program where an initial bond is posted by the Illegal and his employer, say $500 each, with more withheld from the Illegal's earning, as security for his departure from the US by the specified date. Guest worker visas must be applied for in the workers' countries of origin, and participants are only eligible to be employed by their sponsoring employer. Violation of these terms will render the worker ineligible for any future visas or residence in the US. Any guest worker program can only come after anti-Illegal measures are in place. Handshake promises of future diligence will not be trusted from any politician of either party, including President Bush.
The list above is by no means comprehensive, and can be adopted piecemeal or in a single package. That said, incrementalism is probably going to be the way to go, especially politically. These measures would provide a little carrot and lots of stick for Illegals already here to get themselves out. Some of them will need to be tested in the courts, which is another reason to adopt them piecemeal, so that an injunction against omnibus legislation can't stall the whole effort. We ought to be looking initially at easy, politically safe legislation, like the new accounting for family reunification, Border Security/IRS cooperation, English speaking citizenship requirements, and a few others. Our politicians are a trembling, timid bunch, and need to gain a little self-confidence before they'll tackle more difficult issues. Note a few things that aren't on my list: troops or walls on the border. I think they are a futile diversion from cost effective solutions. The best possible wall at the border is to let foreigners know that we respect our sovereignty, and they had best do the same. Note also that I don't call for an immigration moratorium, though others do. I think their position is within the respectable mainstream of a dialogue about immigration, and it's possible I might change my mind later, but I am not currently persuaded that an outright moratorium is necessary. The main problem is multimillion-strong mass of Illegals, and the secondary problem is how we currently select legal immigrants for rapid assimilation into American society. I believe my proposals adequately address both situations, but there is certainly room for debate on the back end. Note also that I have a guest worker program that is actually honest and responsible, and not an Amnesty by another name. My program would ensure that law-abiding foreigners are background-checked before entry, rather than rewarding lawbreaking Illegals after the fact. All of the above could be adopted while allowing politicians so-inclined to chant the "compassionate conservatism" mantra. A few final thoughts... My proposals will cost money and require an expansion of the federal government in certain areas. However, this expense and expansion is all well within the legitimate, Constitutional responsibilities of the federal government. There will be a greater expense initially, as we ramp up to deal with the backlog of Illegals, but a number of my proposals are at least partially self-funding. Also, success in these endeavors will eventually reduce the need for them, and as many Illegals would leave on their own. In contrast, there would be also be an increased expense and expansion of the government if there is an Amnesty, but increases and expansions which would only serve to reward the lawlessness of Illegals and the cowardice of politicians, thereby encouraging more of the same, unless there are also enforcement proposals like mine in the American Interior. But, if we strengthened and enforced our laws consistently within our borders, then we don't need the phantom solution of Amnesty anyway.

"Just as Amnesty rewards Illegal Aliens, and will encourage more of that bad behavior, allowing the political elites to get away with offering an Amnesty as a solution to a problem entirely caused by their own malfeasance will only encourage more of their bad behavior."Indeed, you are correct. Such amnesty can reward bad and/or illegal behavior...hardly something that we should be thrilled about perpetuating.
But there is also another side of the story, and without seeing both sides one can't comprehend the full picture.
For instance, amnesty *might* be offered in such a way as to force the documentation and tracking of illegals who are currently off of our Homeland Security radar screen. One can hardly expect illegals to volunteer to come forward for mass deportation, after all, but it isn't unreasonable to think that such illegals *would* come forward to claim an amnesty offer...and if they do, then poof! Suddenly we are able to track them and perform other useful defensive operations on and around them.
Nor is this unheard of. Far more amnesty has been given to hardened criminals in the past based upon their cooperation with out government on criminal and national defense issues, and surely *most* of these illegals wouldn't even be classified as "hardened" criminals.
And there is another thing: amnesty hasn't been proposed.
Lets wait until or if such a plan is officially proposed before we jump to conclusions that it is a bad plan.
On a broad level, surely *ALL* of us would agree that offering amnesty as a reward for illegal behavior would be a bad idea if no national security objectives were enhanced in the slightest, for instance.
And without such a plan having been proposed, it's pretty hard to attack or defend it.
So with those theoretical mentioned above, I urge a wait and see stance.

I think this is an important point you have made;I'd like to see this implemented. The problem ,Sabre,is that some of the WoD-Patriot Act hystericals would leap onto this program as well. I agree with you that this program would fall within the parameters set in the Constitution andI agree this is needed as well. So,where do we start? Shall we as a group push this onto our Congress critters? It's cogent, appears workable and , in the end, you're right , fair to both the immigrants, particularly the legal ones and to those of us native born.

If they want a 'good neighbor' they must be a 'good neighbor'. If the 'most powerful country' can't improve it's own neighbor, how do we think we're going to improve the rest of the world ???
Illegal Immigration issues effect every facet of the US society and ANYONE who campaigns to FIX this issue (for good) will win by a landslide.
So Mr. Bush if you want Strength from this white 'FEMALE' & my friends, male & female, white, black, brown...Immigration should be your number one Issue !!! (in ENGLISH !!)

So, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, a U.S. possession ,now has a white elephant in Rosey Roads we no longer need.
The PIP, the Independence Party got themselves a hollow victory on both these things in the end. The Commonwealth will soon discover exactly what Corizon Aquino
s Phillipines discovered. It'll be fun .

Indeed, you are correct.
This is a distinction without a difference. Any Illegal Alien Amnesty is a reward for lawbreaking, and an encouragement of more of the same. Artifical political sweeteners won't make Amnesty any less poisonous. One can hardly expect illegals to volunteer to come forward for mass deportation, after all
False premise. Adopt all or most of my proposals 1 through 10 above, and many of the Illegals will do just that. but it isn't unreasonable to think that such illegals *would* come forward to claim an amnesty offer...and if they do, then poof! Suddenly we are able to track them and perform other useful defensive operations on and around them.
The cost of allowing Amnesty for millions outweighs the illusory benefit here. You still won't have enforcement, as enforcement would eliminate the "need" for Amnesty; you'd have millions more Illegals coming for the next Amnesty; and any terrorists would work around the false promise of the "poof!" because the false documentation industry will continue at full speed. We've tried Amnesty before; it was a failure. No more. Nor is this unheard of. Far more amnesty has been given to hardened criminals in the past based upon their cooperation with out government on criminal and national defense issues, and surely *most* of these illegals wouldn't even be classified as "hardened" criminals.
Really? Far more? More than 10 million Amnesties for hardened criminals? Only if you count plea bargains as Amnesties. Whether or not we can classify all Illegals as hardened criminals, they are all deportable. That's the law, and we should get to it. The Illegals will assist us in our efforts, once our resolve is clear to them. It's actually a very analogous situation to the War on Terror. And there is another thing: amnesty hasn't been proposed.
A Section 245(i) (read: Clinton) Amnesty extension was proposed by President Bush and defeated in the Spring of 2002. There are a handful of Republican Amnesty proposals currently festering in Congress. This President has never promised no Amnesty, only and always "no *blanket* Amnesty." His intentions are more than clear. And without such a plan having been proposed, it's pretty hard to attack or defend it. So with those theoretical mentioned above, I urge a wait and see stance.
Would we need to see a specific proposal to surrender in the War on Terror in order to attack or defend it? Some proposals are necessarily wrong. Amnesty for Illegal Aliens is one. I urge vociferous, pre-emptive dissent to President Bush's pro-Amnesty inclinations.

Nobody is for "amnesty" as a general statement.
The main thing is to secure the borders, so we stop illegal immigration.
Beyond that, as I said, what do you want to do, have the police go on a house to house search and grab anyone who can't present citizenship papers, drag them kicking and screaming and heave them across the border to Mexico?
To: Sabertooth
Fair enough, but it's difficult for me to oppose a plan that I haven't seen and that hasn't been proposed. I can easily oppose the extreme concept of blanket amnesty, but the muddy middle of amnesty in exchange for tracking illegals is a bit too murky for me to preemptively oppose out of hand.

Perhaps the (liberal) solution is to allow white males three-fifths of a vote.
To: JennysCool
In other words, white males missed the ridiculous cultural boatride that many women and minorities have been floating on lo these many years. They still have an oar in reality Well said, White males are put-down as stupid and insensative in the media. Fathers are riticuled for their fatherhood. So I did what comes natually for Dad... I decided I had better things to do with my time than TV and newspapers. I talk with my Kids more and I'm on the internet and get my news from several sources to sort out the spin from reality.
I simply went about my business and the Dems and the media haven't figured it out yet. The press should have - I buy houses, cars, go on exotic vacations and spend money on my family like crazy (colleges, cloths, etc.), but they don't care that they diss me in their advertizing.
No problem, as for me and my family, we will go about our business elsewhere.

No, this is the Clinton-Bush non-solution. The borders will not be secure so long as the interior is not secure. Secure the interior, and you won't "need" Amnesty. Fail to secure the interior, and Amnesty won't deliver on any of the false promises of its proponents. Beyond that, as I said, what do you want to do, have the police go on a house to house search and grab anyone who can't present citizenship papers, drag them kicking and screaming and heave them across the border to Mexico?
No, and this is a disingenuous question on your part. Nowhere did I suggest t going house to house; I proposed politically feasible, economical, and realistic solutions to the problem you said had none. Your solution is to make things worse with this or that Amnesty, followed or preceded by "REALISTIC" in caps. The point was coming up with REALISTIC solution, not FANTASY "solutions".
None of my proposals are fantastic, except to the extent that handwringers and apologists for appeasement to Illegals would be required to put down their delusions and be honest with themselves, and others.

Secure the interior,"

This is absolutely incorrect. Illegal immigration needs to be stopped at the borders, not try to turn every US citizen into a hunter of illegals. That is totally backwards.
If the borders are secured and the current situation is dealt with internatlly, there will be no more problems.
