Are you saying that because the press fawned over Jackie, that made her more attractive??

No. I'm saying that the media fawned over Jackie, because she was, by far, the most attractive First Lady that we ever had. Also, she had the kind of real class that only comes from either old money or from growing up in the Old South as an nth generation Rainbow Girl or DeMolay, which also signifies, to some degree, old money.

True. But, we were not discussing Presidents. I didn't like JFK at all. But, if we were discussing Presidents, I'm sure that I could say as many bad things about Dubya as about JFK. But, since we were discussing First Ladies, I won't go there. In particular, we were discussing the attractiveness of the First Ladies. Jackie Kennedy was extremely attractive, both physically and in the way she presented herself to the public. She had a presence that made other women want to be like her.

I was reading an article about Audrey Hepburn a few months ago, that pointed out the fact that she had a much bigger impact on the fashion industry than any other single person, ever. They mentioned that the only person that even came close to affecting as many fashion changes as Audrey Hepburn, was Jackie Kennedy and that even she was a poor second and there was no third to speak of. It should be noted, however, that both looked good in just about anything, which explains a large part of their popularity with the press.

Laura Bush is attractive, comports herself quite well and in comparison to what we had to endure over the last 8 years, is stellar. But, "most" attractive First Lady? ... Not even close.

For pure class and just knowing how to dress to match her appearance, even Barbara Bush was far more attractive than Laura Bush; not that Laura is a dog, by any means. Laura is a very nice and attractive person. But, using the word "most" to compare her attractiveness to other First Ladies is absurd.

Unfortunately, due to the changes in our society, it will probably be a long time, if ever, before we have another First Lady with the great combination of looks, style and class of Jackie Kennedy. That's because, even the extremely wealthy, for the most part, don't have near as much class as they used to. Even the Rainbow/DeMolays seem to have relaxed their standards over what they were when I grew up, with the exception of a few chapters in the DEEP, DEEP, DEEP, South. (My wife made me put in that last exception. But, even she admits that only a few chapters still concentrate on turning out real ladies and gentlemen.) In fact, come to think of it, even English royalty and nobility isn't near what it used to be, either (i.e. Prince Charles).

With very few exceptions, true class has been supplanted with a pasteurized, homogenized, made-for-TV version of class, that bears as little resemblance to its namesake, as the recent reagan hit piece resembles its namesake and it's not getting any better. Considering that shift, even though Laura Bush is far from being the most attractive or classy First Lady ever, she may well turn out to be the most attractive and classy First Lady that we will have for a long time to come. But, only the future will bear that out.

Whenever a picture is posted, you're supposed to enter the dimensions of the picture. If people don't enter the dimensions, it ends up showing only half the picture and I have to use the sliding bar at the bottom of the screen in order to see the rest of the picture and the sidebar from FR. I can do that, but I prefer to have the thread listing and the FR sidebar on the screen at the same time.

After I post enough messages, it will go away.

I was experimenting as I said.. you had mentioned software that reduced pix size. I am not familiar with that. thought I would see if on other's (yours particularly) screens it would be smaller. I too had to "work" & use sidebar to see it all. I did save pix & will use photo shop to reduce it to workable size.

Before photoshop I had to do the dreaded math to reduce the measurements to be manageable for my profile page and posting misc pix.

Sorry for the inconvenience.. and I am glad to know there wasn't some nasty virus or whatever that jumped out at you!

A-A, you have got to be kidding all of us. Laura Bush is far and away a more attractive woman, in every way, than Jackie!

The "flap" about Jackie was the usual foo-foo stuff generated by an adoring lieberal press because she was attractive (I never said she was ugly, just not as pretty as Laura), rich and was married to Jack. Not to mention the whole "Camelot" schtick.

If "W" was a lieberal Democrat, you'd be seeing the same stuff about Laura. He is not a Kennedy Democrat, so you will not see that stuff, and I, for one, am glad of it.

Laura goes about her First Lady duties with dignity and class and without fanfare. Good on her!

I disagree. In pictures, Jackie always looked as though she smelled something not quite right. She always had a somewhat condescending air to her. Maybe it was her upbringing, I don't know, but Laura Bush always looks as though she would welcome anyone without judgement and be friendly.

Here's a Reality Check!

Taxman, you may be pretty sharp politically, but if you think that Laura Bush is more attractive than Jackie Kennedy was, then you better have your eyes examined, because you've got a serious vision problem.

This whole Laura Bush attractiveness thing is so transparent. When faced with a growing number of Republicans (so called core voters), who are very upset at Dubya's RINO domestic policies and his continuing assaults on the Constitution, the bushbots, realizing that the war on terror isn't deflecting enough criticism, start trying to portray Laura Bush as some "great" First Lady, to try and take more attention off of Dubya's RINO domestic policy and assaults on the Constitution.

First of all, it's not working and second, although Laura Bush is generally attractive, she can't hold a candle to either Jackie Kennedy or Nancy Reagan and will, in all likelihood, be remembered on a par with Barbara Bush and Rosalynn Carter; which is nothing to be ashamed of.

There is, of course, one other possibility. I have known a lot of men who are really intimidated by exceptionally beautiful women. Most won't admit it though. I've seen this numerous times. I had a good friend in the Navy, who was much more attractive than me and had no problem meeting moderately attractive girls, yet I was the one who always ended up with the real lookers, because I wasn't intimidated by them. He wouldn't admit that he was intimidated by them, but whenever he was faced with wanting to approach one, his words at that time told a different story. He, like many other guys that I have known, had a quite false preconception, that they were going to be more aloof and harder to talk to. I imagine that some of that could be at play here, though I think that most of it is just bushbot spin.

Well, there are two points to address in that statement. First, on most of his domestic issues, Dubya is, for all intents and purposes, a Democrat. And second, the rest of that statement is just more bushbot propaganda.

In fact, Jackie Kennedy got the press attention because she was the first (and to this date, only) First Lady who had the looks to have been a top fashion model, had she chosen that route. We're talking cover of Vogue. Laura Bush, on the other hand, could never pass for a fashion model, let alone, a top fashion model. That's not bad. Hey, my wife, though drop-dead-gorgeous, wouldn't be mistaken for a fashion model either.

The point is that the press covered Jackie so much, not simply because she was beautiful and the First Lady, but because she was exceptionally beautiful and the First Lady and as a result of that small difference that made her exceptional, the public couldn't get enough of her. In fact, I remember joking to some of the other guys at our Nixon campaign headquarters, "I wish we could have Richard Nixon as President and Jackie Kennedy as First Lady" and all of the guys laughed, but were in general agreement. I didn't like her politics and I didn't like her husband. But, the lady was beautiful and she had class - real class.

The difference between Jackie Kennedy and Laura Bush is sort of like the difference between Miss America and Miss Congeniality. Just because Miss Congeniality never makes it to the final round, doesn't mean that she is not beautiful. She had to have something, just to get to the pageant. So, even though she wasn't finals material, she should still be proud. Similarly, even though Laura Bush is not finals material, in the "virtual" First Lady pageant., she is nonetheless attractive and we should be proud of her. But, we need to keep it in perspective.
