On top of the vacancies, Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (search) of South Dakota is potentially facing a formidable challenge in 2004 against former Republican Rep. John Thune (search).

Thune lost the Senate race against Democrat Tim Johnson (search) in 2002 by 524 votes. On Tuesday, he announced he was not going to seek the House seat being vacated by convicted Rep. Bill Janklow (search). Republican sources told Fox News that Thune is recruiting staff for a campaign against Daschle next year.

Could the good people of that state PLEASE put the good of the country ahead of their love of pork and elect Thune?!!?! Thank you.

AND post poll-watchers to the Indian burial grounds so Sitting Bull doesn't vote this go-round.

Bling.

Thune will have so much fun at the debates. I can't wait to here the response: "well, while economic growth saddens my opponent, it really makes me feel good about how our nation is moving forward without the doubters."

Poll watchers on the reservation is easier said than done. The natives aren't exactly "friendly" to GOP poll watchers who want to stop them from committing fraud. I've been a poll watcher in a black precinct in Little Rock, and believe me, they don't want poll watchers there and will do anything to intimidate you. By the way, I thought Indian Reservations were "Sovereign territory", a nation unto itself. With this in mind, why are residents of reservations allowed to vote in U.S. elections? They are citizens of the Iriquois, or whatever tribe they are in, nation. Not the U.S. They shouldn't be allowed to vote in U.S. elections. The laws of the U.S. aren't enforceable on the reservation.

Good point. I'm still convinced that's why Thune lost the last time. Indian votes were bought and fraud was rampant . . . but Thune refused to challenge the results. If he'd been a Democrat, they'd still be counting.

THAT'S why I'll support him all I can this go-round. I'm not a rich man, but I'll do what I can. Dasshole has to go.

As a Minnesotan, I won't be voting in a U.S. Senate race next year -- Thune is DEFINITELY my candidate of choice. I think the guy is so great. I actually was "deeply saddened" when he didn't win in '02.

Do any South Dakota FReepers know who's in charge of hiring Thune's staff (other than Thune, duh!)? I'd like to send 'em my resume.

Nowhere yet. He hasn't officially announced and there is no website up. Assuming he does announce, periodically do a web search for "Thune for Senate".

Why don't you vote in South Dakota next year? You can vote in South Dakota for Thune, and in Minnesota for Bush. Hell, the RATS do it all the time. If you get caught, just scream and holler about how you were disenfranchised because you couldn't vote in both states.

I can think of one other. Bill Sasser was the Senate Democrat Whip and was going to become the Democratic Leader after the 1994 election. But Sasser didn't get pass that election because a nobody doctor named Bill Frist beat him unexpectedly.
