Low-carb mania may reach new highs Monday when the Hardee's and Carl's Jr. hamburger chains announce plans to introduce the fast food world's first "low-carb burgers." The big bunless burgers - 1/3- to 1/2-pound - will come wrapped in large leaves of iceberg lettuce for a handhold on the burger and fixings.

Yep. I have Dr. Bernstein's book. It is soooo very restrictive, tho. But, it was the first place that I learned about diet and diabetes med needs.

I think Bernstein in certainly right, but I recognize I can't live that way the rest of my life. Come on - no onions??? I go with SouthBeach and am losing slowing but surely. I am on thyroid meds, which slows things down, but isn't an impossible hurdle.

As I told my endo the other day, the ADA should be ashamed of itself for supporting a diet that, I think, is detrimental to diabetics. There is nothing they could tell me about nutrition for diabetics that I would be willing to believe.

Good luck to your husband.

Anyone have a link to a site that lists Atkins type foodstuffs? I'm interested in starting this but am worried about lack of choices.

Then you're in the right place... Get on Carlo's ping list!

There are some really great recipies that he's posted, as well as many others...

I have one for Galic encrusted chicken breast with (or without) Alfredo Sauce, where the majority of the carbs actually comes from the garlic! And the alfredo sauce is very low carb, and great on brocolli or cauliflower too.

OK, I feel that I can act as a expert on this topic, because I'm a frequent patron of Hardees in KC.

First off, due to my work, I find myself eating fast food for lunch nearly every day. It's almost impossible for me to bring my lunch with me, since I never know where I'll be for lunch. I may be at a client's site, at the office, or en-route to a location. I find it's just easier for me to stop off and get something "fast food" while I'm on my way, than to skip a meal (like I did before I started dieting).

My typical lunch would be something like this... If I stop at McDonalds, I'd order 3 of their double cheese burgers (@ $1.00 each), and strip off the buns and most of the toppings (cheese too), and have some water to go with it. While munching, I'd tear up the bread and feed the birds out of the window of my car.

A&W would pretty much be the same... A few burgers, eating the lettuce and tomato too. No bun. And water to drink.

But the best IS Hardees! I never thought I'd say it, but their burgers are really good. The stuff they put on them are about the freshest I've had in fast food, and the burger taste is great. They really do taste like hamburgers I would make at home. I like McDonalds burgers, but they don't really taste like hamburgers I make. The Hardee's "Thick Burgers" do. The only down-side is that they're more expensive than any other burgers. But they're big... You can get a 1/3 lb single, a 1/2 lb single, or a 2/3 lb double! HUGE! But very tasty!

Why no cheese?

The bread tends to stick and I've gotten use to meat only - with the pickle, I need the pickle ...

Well.... After going to his web-site - there are several there who are doing a combination of Atkins/Bernstein.. it is all new to us.... but I agree it is daunting.

My dh was started by his Dr. on the typical diet recommended by the ADA and GAINED 20 lbs. He already needed to lose about 80 (now 100) so this was a very depressing result. Having lost 7 lbs so quickly - he is now encouraged.... he also has high blood pressure and very bad sleep apnea due to weight.....
I'll watch for your here and hope to hear good news...

They look at you funny when you buy those? FYI--in a pinch, they are most likely available at your local adult book store.

I won't ask why you know that.

I mailordered a couple boxes with the whipper machine, but from now on I'll get 'em wholesale - I'm in the restaurant biz and they're in the catalog.

So you've heard of Whippits used for other things too, huh?

I julienne-cut turnips, coat them in a batter made from Ketato mix and egg, and deep fry them.

On the recipes section of the Bulletin Board at www.eatprotein.com someone posted making low-carb fries like you're doing, but using zucchini instead. That's definately one plant that will be planted abundantly in my garden next spring.

That is a lot of calories (although the "base" food, the 4 eggs, is only 300 calories)! Congrats on your success.

I haven't tried the zucchini recipe yet. I'm sure it's good. I just remember thinking "wow, finally a good use for a turnip!" (please, no flames from the turnip lover lobby...)

I'm interested in starting this but am worried about lack of choices.

My son is a reciently diagnosed diabetic and I've found that now is a great time to avoid carbs for everyone. There are candies, ice cream (4g of carbs per 1/2 cup), diet drinks, etc, etc, etc.. Just go shopping and look. You'd be surprised at how much variety is available.

Restaurant wholesale suppliers carry them; restaurants use cream whippers routinely.

Here is a site that sells both the whippers and the cartridges, if you're interested. I bought a 1-pint Liss whipper; it works great, but is surprisingly difficult to clean thoroughly. I suspect this is true of all whippers - the cream inside tends to cling and is hard to completely scrub out.

Makes *great* flavored whipped cream with Splenda, though, and it keeps for a couple of weeks in the fridge easily once made up.

I am glad if the diet works for you, but realise HOW it works is more to do with simple mathematics (less calories in than calories burns = weight loss, roughly 3500 calories need to be burned more than consumed to lose 1 lbs of weight.) I do agree in the first phases of the low carb thing you can see some dramatic water weight lose end of the day its simple caloric restriction.

Ah you have fallen for the old a Calorie is a Calorie lie. It has befuddled millions of sheeple.

No I have an basic understanding of mathematics, and I have read what the low carb diet authors themselves have already admitted.... removing empty calories from a persons diet and limiting them to protien as their primary intake by and large reduces the daily caloric intake of most people drastically.

The people who buy the marketing hype while ignoring the words of the very people who write/sell the diets is astounding.

No people who STILL buy the calorie is a calorie fallacy are "astounding". A calorie is NOT a calorie. The amount of food you eat is NOT what determines whether you lose or gain weight. It is the type of food. However, right now I don't have the time to tackle the unenviable task of educating you.

hahahahahah Educating me, hahaha.. you better go read up on the Doctors who not only created atkins but the latest rendition of the Beach Body as well.. they are on record admitting their diets are round about caloric reduction methods.... You are completely ignorant, Dr. Atkins himself admitted as much many times in his life... you can moronically buy into the marketing nonsense all you want, but at the end of the day if you don't think the carb restriction diets aren't caloric reduction diets, you are taking a stand completely at odds with the diets authors.... but hey, why bother finding out the facts, when marketing hype is so easy to regurgitate.

Have a nice life.

I can see you are a hopeless troll. You are right on one thing though, Low Carb does end up lowering caloric consumption IN THE END. It corrects eating disorders. However caloric restriction is not why you lose weight. I and almost every one else here ate many more calories early into Low Carb than we did before and lost weight rapidly. Unless you can't comprehend what you read (a definite possibility) you would have gleaned that from any of Atkins books, Protein Power, Life without Bread etc. Obviously this concept is too difficult for you to understand. I would suggest you go reread the book perhaps with a Cliffs Notes (to guide you through the more difficult concepts) and then come back when you are properly educated. You are embarrassing yourself here.

Sorry HJ, the facts are quite different from your interpretation.

Atkins doesn't work by reducing caloric intake.

WRONG!

It works by exploiting the following equation:

Calories In = Calories Out + Calories Excreted

The 'Calories Excreted' component refers to the incomplete breakdown of stored fat energy through ketosis.

As scientific studies have confirmed, a high calorie diet comprised of fat and protein leads to a greater weight loss than a lower calorie carbohydrate diet. Ouch!

The facts are in: Atkins works. You'll just have to deal with it.
