A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....12-15-03....Military Monday

A Few of FR's Finest
....Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.
Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :)   If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day! ~ Billie

Good evening finest sistahs and finest friends. What a special day yesterday was...and to hear the dems "squealing" like little piglets once again is so predictable and laughable. Even Rush was pulling out quotes from DU! It's fitting that today is military monday. God bless our men and women in uniform and their families.

Wish I could hang around but have tons of work to do. Have a wonderful evening all.

Makeshift barracks just fine for troops

FORT BRAGG - Maj. Mark Segovia wakes up every morning under a basketball hoop in a Fort Bragg fitness center. He says it could be a lot worse.

"We could be outside in tents. We are just glad they put us somewhere warm and dry," said Maj. Segovia, a mortgage banker assigned to the 486th Civil Affairs Battalion in Tulsa, Okla.

Fort Bragg is crowded because of the number of soldiers preparing to deploy next month to Iraq and Afghanistan. To accommodate them, Maj. Segovia and about 800 other soldiers assigned to Army Reserve civil affairs are living at the Lee, Hosking and Frederick physical fitness centers.

About 200 soldiers live in Lee center. Cots line the gym floor. Tarps cover the court’s foul line and three-point arc to protect the floor. Black boxes filled with gear sit next to the cots.

Maj. Howard Schaffer is assigned to the 364th Civil Affairs Brigade in Portland, Ore.

"There is plenty of hot water," he said. "One draw back is you get a chorus of snores every night."

Maj. Jan Northstar, a spokeswoman for the 2125th Garrison Support Unit, says the crowding has happened before and will happen again.

Maj. Northstar’s unit oversees mobilization at Fort Bragg and has processed, deployed and demobilized almost 24,000 Army Reserve and National Guard troops. Fort Bragg officials said the post can house about 2,800 guardsmen and reservists.

Most of them live in World War II-era wooden barracks.

The N.C. National Guard’s 30th Heavy Separate Brigade arrived in the fall to prepare to deploy to Iraq, upping the number of soldiers going through Fort Bragg to about 3,700.

The civil affairs soldiers could not mobilize at another post because the unit’s higher headquarters is at Fort Bragg and it’s easier to train and support the mobilizing units.

Most of the soldiers said the living conditions in the gym weren’t that bad. A common gripe was the lack of privacy and personal space.

Women are housed in separate World War II-era barracks. The barracks offer more privacy but are in disrepair.

Sgt. Julia Pilat of the 401st Civil Affairs Battalion in Rochester, N.Y., called the barracks awful, but said she prefers the conditions to those in the gym.

"At least in the World War II barracks you have a little more privacy and a working washer and dryer," she said.

The fitness centers will be closed until January, when the soldiers are expected to leave for Iraq and Afghanistan. Fort Bragg has 12 fitness centers, and five remain open.

About 30,000 soldiers are deployed from Fort Bragg, which has eased crowding at the remaining open gyms.

And for the next Christmas present, perhaps the troops will round up Osama Bin Laden??!!
Please, Lord. let it be so...

In the meantime, could there be a better picture of a (real) Commander-in-Chief striding to the podium, full of purpose and pride?

Not like his predecessor, who bombed an aspirin factory in Africa and an empty tent in Afghanistan as his effort to strike blows at Bin Laden; and he and his wife and daughter loathed the military, making them pass trays at White House gatherings like flunkies....

Here is The President of the United States of America:

Kinda makes the heart swell, doesn't it?

God Bless our U.S. Soldiers. How fitting that the Tyrant and Butcher in the end was found like the coward he is.

Amen! Bullies are cowards and big loudmouth. I'm glad they got the SOB!

I wholeheartedly concur Maggie!!! There's now way to say it better.

After reading your post and hearing the Dims rants today I'm reminded of the chapter in The Hobbit where Bilbo Baggins takes up his sword "Sting" and risks his own life battling enormous spiders to save the 13 dwarves. No, these really are dwarves!! The difference is that after the fray Thorin & Co. got it, but the Dims are talking out of the spider hole. Anybody got a man-hole-cover?

*wipes brow* Whew! I thought I might be in trouble. Thanks teach, I'll try to find some spare time tomorrow. :)

How is your crew? Work has been much busier and Christmas planning and activities are keeping both of us on the run. Shae is doing very well, thanks for asking. :) She just had a lovely date with a fine Christian man. Would you mind putting her in your prayers? I think he may be THE ONE.
