Saddam's young grandkids break down in tears

December 14 2003 at 07:03PM

Amman - Grandchildren of ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, who sought haven in Jordan with their mothers in July, broke down in tears when they were told Sunday of his capture, parents of their schoolmates told AFP.

Raghad and Rana Saddam Hussein and their nine children were granted refuge in Jordan, where they live in a former palace of King Abdullah II's late father, King Hussein, on a hill in eastern Amman.

Their children attend two exclusive private schools in Jordan, where the families have kept a low profile since arriving in the kingdom from Syria.

"When news of Saddam's capture became known, school officials gathered the children in the principal's office at both schools and informed them of what had happened and the children broke down in tears," one parent said.

'The children broke down in tears' "The children were shielded from the rest of their schoolmates until their drivers came and took them home to be with their mothers," the parent, who declined to be named, added.

Meanwhile the regional correspondent of the Dubai-based Arab satellite television, Al-Arabiya, told AFP that one of Saddam's daughters was also stricken by reports of his capture.

Silawi said he spoke on the telephone from Dubai with Raghad. "She was crying and kept on repeating 'I wished I had never lived to this day'," he said.

Raghad and Rana suffered from their father's sadistic streak just like the rest of the Iraqi population, seeing their husbands and their families exterminated on his orders.

On August 8, 1995 the two women, their husbands, General Hussein Kamel Hassan al-Majid and his brother Colonel Saddam Kamel, along with about 30 members of the Majid family, spectacularly defected to Jordan.

'I wished I had never lived to this day' Two days later, from the safety of his refuge across the border, Hussein Kamel appealed in an AFP interview for the Iraqi people to rise up and overthrow his father-in-law's regime.

The Kamel brothers were killed in February 1996 on orders from Saddam who had lured them back home with a promise of an amnesty. - Sapa-AFP

The privilege will be of limited duration now that Saddam is caught.

I feel bad for any children because they did not asked to be dragged into the mess their grandfather made but his daughters? What the hell did they think was going to happen to him? He was either going to be captured, shot, stabbed, disemboweled, blown-up, etc.

And how many thousands of grandchildren wept and died on account of this verminiforous old fool? This thing was a scab on the posterior of humanity and was allowed to live for far too long. How will his grandchildren feel when they learn the truth about this hyena? He sullies the revered name "Grand Father."

I think human nature is much the same there as it is here in this country.Family love, regardless of other factors, run deep.If anyone here has a parent that went astray of the law and was later arrested and was doomed for execution,I am sure they would also shed tears. That does not mean they condoned their action.

Well, and NPR commentator today did say that the capture of Saddam is a humiliation for the people of Iraq!

You can not make stuff like that up.

I am trying to feel bad for the children, but it is difficult. After their loving gramps had his son in laws killed, it is hard to believe this isn't just propaganda, and not true at all. They are living in a palace, while Iraqi's at home live in mud huts, they have drivers, while their homeland people ride camels, or walk. Not sure these tears are true.

I wouldn't disagree. I was just saying that the Jordanians will have no real benefit in giving these folks a privileged status for much longer.

Let them go dig up and sack bones from the killing fields their "grandfather" left behind so they can see what he was really like.

Hey, its got to be better than being drug out into the streets by your father and brothers and beaten with the dull side of a machette until blood runs down your face.

.........oh just nevermind.....

Oh I am not so sure.Sorta like the Kennedy clan here in a way,or the Bush clan or even the Rockafellers. Here it is politics, over there it is royalty. It is a fact if you have money, have access to money or are related to money there is always someone to come to your aid, hence my tag line.

Now tell those kids that Grandpa killed their fathers, and watch them cry again.

I mean, come on. It's pretty obvious they don't know.
