"Saddam Captured" Celebratory FReep in Philadelphia Today
After Action Report

Having been awakened by a phone call that Saddam had been captured, the first thing that jumped into my mind was "City Line Avenue". It was payback time for all the left wing looney tunes for their snarky remarks and unfounded wacko charges.
At about 9 am, I took up my position outside the local NBC affiliate and across from the ABC affiliate there on City Line Avenue. That the stations were there was just a bonus, the main reason is that the intersection sees thousands of cars per hour. It's a main traffic artery west from Philadelphia to the 'burbs. It feeds from US-1 and I-76. Lots of cars, trucks and buses.
And what did they see? Saddam Hussein in camo BDU shirt, with red shoulder boards, red beret and a belt of 30 caliber ammo across his chest. And oh yeah, bloody hands. His sign was simple, three lines, four words. First line was "SAVE ME" in black. Second and third lines were "VOTE DEMOCRAT" in red.
In the two and a half hours I spent on the corner, there were just two "Liberal IQ" salutes. The first one was from the first car that passed. At least the guy had some flair and delivered it sideways with style. The second guy in a red station wagon leaned all the way over to the passanger side and was shaking with rage.
But the overwhelming sentiment today was laughter at the democrats position. Being overcast with snow, rain and sleet, it was difficult to see in some cars, but those in which I could see, had a vast majority of smiles. There was a fair amount of thimbs up and horn honks, especially when a local TV camera showed up. People were honking, rolling down their windows and giving the thumbs up.
Whenever it was cold and I felt like leaving, there'd be another round of horn nonks and thumbs up, so I stayed longer than I expected. You forget the cold and the stiff fingers after that very quickly. If I hadn't consumed a 20 oz coffee on the way there, I would have stayed three and a half hours.

Philadelphia, PA. Ahhhh, the home of my mother and father. Where their parents came from Italy and Germany. Worked hard, raised their children and taught their children what it meant to be in the United States of America. My parents told us many stories of living and working in Philadelphia.
My mother was there in the same parish as my "FUTURE HUSBAND" "WAY FUTURE HUSBAND" was growing u in West Philly where my mom was raised. My dad was born on Christian Street in South Philadelphia. My Grandparents lived there until they died. Ahhh, south street.
My mother worked at the bell telephone and met my dad there for the first time. They spoke of walking the streets in downtown Philly looking in store windows passing people who were respectful, nice, polite and dressed nicely (not rich) as well.
Many stories of Philadelphia. Many trips on the train to Philadelphia to get winter clothing or to see Santa in the big Department stores. Lots of meals at Horn N' Hardart. Wow...what memories.
Lots of good people in Philadelphia. Lots of good people there too. We used to go to Haverford, PA, South Philly, West Philly, Narbeth, PA, Ardmore, PA and Wayne, PA and Berwyn, PA. Thanks ... that brought back memories of Independence Hall and the like. My parents remembered their roots and passed them along to us. God bless them all.

Enjoyed your post. I think Jim was originally from Texas, but like Nebraska-born Richie Ashburn (or for that matter Boston-born Ben Franklin) was completely and enthusiastically adopted as a Native Son. Before his weather gig, O'Brien was a DJ on the local rock station WFIL for several years.

Sniff, sniff, something in my eye. Don't forget Palumbo's, Jerry Blavat, Aquarama, WIBG, Goldenberg's Peanut Chews, Scrapple at the Melrose Diner, Wee Willie Webber, Frank's Black Cherry Wishniak -- and in Wildwood "Watch the tramcar please" and Taylor Pork Roll and The Lucky Club and Mack's Pizza. Sigh.

As I told another Freeper by private e-mail, I already witnessed that this morning when I went to work out in my health club. I'm in Manhattan, lots of Liberals, and as the stories were being shown on the TVs in the club, some of these people looked sick. When the news came on that Bush was going to be on TV at noon, one of them could no longer control her anger and said that there was no way she was going to watch him "crow" about this and said the whole thing is "horrible." I laughed in her face and said it was a great day. Believe me, these people hate Bush so much that they would rather see a million 9-11 attacks than have things happen that make him look good.

I'm taking some liberties here to be truthful. However, I heard Ellen Ratner say on FOX that she hopes Bush screws up the war in Iraq. Logic tells me she MUST be despondent over the capture of Hussein. And I can't imagine the others actually being HAPPY with his capture either! They operate under a black philosophy: "It is my duty to undercut all my opponent's successes. Because when he succeeds, I fail."
