The capture of Saddam Hussein is actually bad news for U.S. troops serving in Iraq. That's the bizarre assessment from former Clinton administration counter-terrorism chief Richard Clarke, who said Sunday morning that the Iraqi dictator's arrest may only exacerbate opposition to U.S. occupation forces.
"I don't think it's going to have a near term positive effect on security," Clarke told ABC's "This Week."
Ignoring reports that Saddam was bankrolling insurgents in Iraq, Clinton's terrorism czar insisted, "I think it's very likely that these cells [attacking U.S. troops] are fully autonomous, they're spread around the country and they haven't been getting commands from Saddam."
Clarke said that "over time" Saddam's capture may be helpful, but he predicted, "In the short term, we may have actually a worse problem" because the news may prompt enemy forces to try to demonstrate they can still attack.
Former Clinton administration United Nations ambassador Richard Holbrooke also warned that Saddam's capture may not change much. "Remember, these Baathists who have been supporting him are not going to stop because he's been captured," he told NBC's Tom Brokaw.
Though Holbrooke admitted that the Iraqi dictator's arrest was "a big blow" to the insurgents, he said they weren't fighting for Saddam, but instead "for their political movement and for their very lives."
"Whether or not this ends the war - I don't think it will - is the critical question," Holbrooke said.
Brhahahahah!
Odd, isn't it, how those who encourage suicide bombers don't seem as eager to share that same fate?
You got that right! The rats can't be a happy bunch today.
LOL. Maybe that was why he flew into Iraq on Thanksgiving, to pick up the bag of money.
another case of "do as I say, not as I do."
But hey! George Will on ABC just said a knee slapper:
Will said, "What a trifecta (sp) week for George Bush.
"The Dow goes over 10,000,
Saddam gets captured,
and Al Gore endorses anti war Howard Dean"
All the clinton crud should be placed on trial as terrorist enablers.

Zuni: many of these insurgents have huge ammo dumps, military grade weaponry and military training using things like mines, mortars, rocket launchers, explosives. This was obviously planned before the war.
seekthetruth: interesting that it just happened NOW of all times, when chimpy's poll numbers were dropping like stones. magnificent timing!
GloriaSmith: Fool me once with a fake turkey in Iraq, shame on you.... fool me twice with a fake turkey in Iraq, shame on me
Randomkoolzip: It seems a pyrrhic victory, at best.
Angry Amish: Those Repub assclowns wills use these pictures over and over. I bet his show trial will start about a week before the election next year. We will be beat up as unpatriotic when those jerks are trying to destroy the country. Don't the people realize Bush is Hitler?
.
The nice part is that there are dissenting opinions on that thread. Bush isn't Hitler, this is good news, and the troops could be safer, etc. Maybe they've realized that their extremism costs them more than it gains them... dagnabbit!! ;^)
