I'm sorry to have to report that one of our own Freepers, TrappedInLiberalHell, has passed away. His profile is HERE

I met Chris this past summer and found him to be a brilliant young man, who unfortunately carried around a lot of painful psychological troubles. He wrote few posts here, but was an active and clever noter, and a very sweet young man.

R.I.P., Chris van Loon
b. 3/2/72, d. 12/9/03

jhoffa, Fiona just posted the following. It seems we have Chris' date of birth on the Memorial wrong. Thought you should be apprised.

I got that wrong on the date of birth. Years of growing up with a different day/date protocol to Americans, made me somewhat confused in my grief... for the record, Chris was born February 3rd, 1972. (A Thursday, if anyone's interested... I Googled it.) He died a few months short of his 32nd birthday.

Sad Bump to you Mrs. Trapped.

God be with you. I am so sorry this is late in posting. I just didn't understand exactly what had happened and only now have pieced it together. Chris looks like my cousin Scott so much it is eerie.

PS:

That's what's reflected on the Memorial, 1972 - 2003

Is this correct?

Yes, February 3rd is the correct date. Thankyou and sorry for all the bother... I'm never sure which way is down and which way is up anymore, my thinking has become rather seriously blunted by all this. The words and gestures of support I've had from people here are truly wonderful. No newspaper obituaries as yet, as the situation is rather complex. Chris's father is rather ill and his sister fears giving him the news right now of his son's death, might destroy him. For that reason, no obits in the California (or Oregon, where Chris died) newspapers in case news gets back to him from someone else... To get an obit in the Australian newspapers, I would need to provide a death certificate, and I don't have a copy of that document yet. I myself had to leave the United States temporarily back in July (I despised having to leave, but I despised even more the idea of becoming an illegal alien) and because of visa problems cannot be readmitted to the country for another 2.5 years. Long story. There are many people and organisations I am angry at right now. However, the loss of such a dear and gifted, if withdrawn, man, whom I was proud to call my husband - that fact merely fills me with an overwhelming sadness. R.I.P, Christopher.

Very sad news. He was quite brilliant and had a razor wit. I just wish his life had been happier. It certainly has shown a compassionate streak in the denizens of FreeRepublic. Something that delights me. A nice tribute to Chris.

Older then I by 12 days; may his soul rest in peace. Blessings and prayers for strength to his family.

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.

If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,"
even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother's womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.

My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
your eyes saw my unformed body.

All the days ordained for me
were written in your book
before one of them came to be.

-Psalm 139: 7-16

Fiona--I am sorry to hear about Chris. I thought him to be an immensely talented Freeper, one whose writing and observation skills I admired. His screen name was so unique and unforgettable--"Trapped in a Liberal Hell"--it expressed what so many of us feel sometimes, especially those of us who live in the Northeastern states.

Chris was a special guy, and his posts reflected wit, thoughtfulness,playfulness, and knowledge of the subject.
It is puzzling how the screen persona and the person were so different.

I have prayed for our Lord to give you the strength and grace you need for each new day. Seeing your posts, I believe that you have a jump on what is needed to carry on in your circumstances.

EggsAckley, thanks for being such a good friend to Fiona--and Chris--by hosting this thread.

Fiona,
I've been out of commission on Free Republic for a while and only now saw this thread.
It is obvious from reading all the posts about Chris that he was an extremely witty, intelligent, gentle person who was well liked by everyone on this website. I was never priviledged to know him, but I have been touched to tears from all that I have read on this thread.
There is really nothing I can say except I am very sorry for your loss. May time lessen your pain and leave you with memories of happier times with your husband.
Take care, and may God grant you peace.

May the Good Lord's forgiveness grant him the peace he sought.

His family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Sorry, no, you're both wrong. He was 30 in 2002. He would have turned 32 this coming February.
