Daily Campaign Finance Reform thread
Posted on 12/11/2003 8:58:58 AM PST by Valin
Would you be willing to start a daily thread with this intent? Or conversely, a thread that is bumped to the top regularly? I would help. I have too many responsibilities to commit to hosting it. Lazamataz
To get this started my suggetion, Start putting pressure on your local rep. and senator to undo this monstrosity. Everytime you see them, ask them, What are you going to do about this? another idea, let them know that you are cutting back by 1/2 your contribution to them as a protest.

My bad.
Gay marriage one week in my home state; SCOTUS protecting the Incumbents Defense Act; a Loot the Young for Free Drugs bill; a married buddy from college sent off to Iraq...
The 'raise awareness' concept without dealing with the fundamental metaphysical problem addressed in my first post will be a misuse of energy, IMO, but I am always open to ideas.

The 'raise awareness' concept without dealing with the fundamental metaphysical problem addressed in my first post will be a misuse of energy, IMO, but I am always open to ideas.Consider this: A) This is not a 'raise awareness' campaign; this is a 'get off your butts and call and write and visit offices and get people who care about it elected' campaign.
B) Wihtout free speech, the ability to affect change on your other issues, dies.

Is there a website which shows the voting records?
I went to Americans for Democratic Action.
They only rate from a leftist perspective.
Sen.Feinstein 85%
Sen. Boxer 95%
Rep Elton Gallegly 0%

"However, Tom Tancredo is nearby and used to appear often on Mike Rosen's AM radio show. Perhaps I'll write Mr. Tancredo and suggest that he start this bill to repeal CFR on the first day of the next session... If we can get something going on Rosen's show, perhaps this can snowball"
Very good idea.

But my critique remains that the entire system is corrupt and hopeless for reform. Energies would be better spent not fighting along the narrow battlelines of CFR but across the entire front.
Is it worth electing good men (by which I mean moral) to sit in the White House? Of course, but when it comes to the single issue you have to understand the issue in greater perspective.
The role of a politician is to be re-elected. There are probably less than 70 'real' conservatives in the House and maybe, maybe 24 in the Senate. If we could not get term limits in 1994, the peak of 'our' political strength in recent times, there is no point in hoping to create momentum to 'correct' CFR.

I just emailed and faxed the following to Mike Rosen and Tom Tancredo:
Representative Tom Tancredo
By fax (202-226-4623) and email
Dear Mr. Tancredo:
As you know, contrary to the expectations of just about everyone in the country, perhaps even of the President who signed the bill, yesterday, the Supreme Court of the United States upheld the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform bill. Thousands of conservatives in this country, including Rush Limbaugh, have decried this shocking decision that abrogates the right to political free speech just prior to an election. This law must be repealed-and repealed immediately.
I am a former resident of Denver and enjoyed listening to you on Mike Rosens AM radio show. Your true conservative values are also appreciated at a grassroots conservative organization of which I am a member, FreeRepublic.com.
That is why you are the ideal Congressman to initiate a bill on the very first day of the next session, a bill to rid this country of this assault on our most fundamental Constitutional right. As one Freeper has suggested, the bill need not be complex. A simple statement to the effect that, by a majority of Congress, Campaign Finance Reform and all associated regulatory changes are hereby rescinded.
There are many of us who hope that President Bush signs this bill, since he broke his campaign promise in refusing to veto CFR.
I also hope that you appear on Mike Rosens show to discuss this issue with ordinary people. The issue is complexI have intelligent friends who have no idea what CFR is. Additionally, perhaps because Americans enjoy so much freedom, they are apathetic about the gradual erosion of their rights, just as they are apathetic about voting. A show in which you and Mr. Rosen explain the importance of repealing this odious law might wake people up and galvanize support for your proposed repeal.
As I explained to my Canadian husband, the loss of rights by increments, like the erosion of rocks on the beach by the persistent tide, occurs so gradually that we dont notice it. But now is the time to stand up for the First Amendment, before theres nothing left of it.
When I was a student at the University of Colorado School of Law, I was taught that political speech should receive the highest protection. The Supreme Court failed miserably in its duty yesterday, and we must work to take back this freedom. I sincerely hope that you will help us.

Excellent letter. I hope you get a proper response.

I just did my bit for the day: got a call from the Republican Cong. Reelection Committee. Told the woman making the call EXACTLY why I wanted my name off their list, and told her to please pass it on.

Great news!!!
I just got a reply from Mike Rosen himself: "Great idea. Rational, concise and correct."
I've NEVER received a reply from a talk radio host, so that tells me he's interested--and since he's Tom's friend, if Tom has any reservations at all, perhaps MR can talk him out of them.
Yippee! :)

bump!
Let's hope these people change their minds next session--if they want re-election next fall, that is. :)

What part of "Congress shall make no law" DON'T they understand? Idiots!
