The conservative solution to the problem of older folks or any folks who are incapable of providing for their own needs due to circumstance beyond their control is to provide for them.

By what defintion of conservative?

By what definition of Constitutional?

By what definition of confiscation?

I'm tired of hearing about how all our civil liberties have disappeared. That's a crock.

I sort of thought that way too, until I got a letter from my health insurance company the other day which required me and my husband to give them our signatures again along with other information so they could track the (small) checks we write for our MSA and report it to the government for the Patriot Act.

Second, Bush has often talked about the massive amount of paperwork that schools have to deal with and that it is wrong. He is not to blame for that. That was in place long before he came to office

There is more now. My husband is a tutor p/t at the local school (we homeschool) and you would not believe the paperwork for these IEP reports and the tests and guidelines and etc. concerning the NCLB Act. You'd probably have to see it to believe it, I suppose.

BTW, to all: excuse any spelling/typo's please, I'm getting sleepy here myself.

'night

How about if we simply elect as many conservatives as we possibly can? Any problems with that?

Walsh would perhaps deny it, but we both have a bit of European conservative in us. And I don't apologize for it. But then, I am a Neocon.

What private organizations?

What charitable organizations?

You just brought out solutions. If people feel there aren't enough charitable or private organizations setting out to help seniors live in dignity, then its time they are created by activists. Not only could they take in monetary donations, but also they could ask for prescription drugs people have that are not in need anymore and should not go to waste. This is just a start.

Here is an example: http://www.freemedicineprogram.com/

I would imagine that providing for the General Welfare of the United States, would include providing for the general welfare of its citizenry.

A communist might look at it and tell us that "general welfare" meant that the government must provide a job to everyone or that health care must be free. I want to see a definition of what "general" welfare meant in the constitution.

"This is a slippery slope which will lead to other legislation increasing spending and increases the population of the government. Down the road, it will also require tax increases."

You would have to be assuming that there will be no further gains in the republican majority over the next few years to believe that will be the case. The trends are not going in that direction. Consolidation of the debate in a republican majority will be restricted to right and far right. Leaving the dim's to continue their ranting and bush hating and because they will be virtually powerless to prevent anything on the right. Bush is a business after all and it is obvious.

No doubt he can see this and is getting the legislation laid down in position to revamp it when the power is consolidated.

Yeah, I've given it some thought and am leaning toward your side. But let me think a little more before I jump in with both feet.

Yes.. there is a difference. Compare that to GW when he was in Texas.
Between 1994 and 2000, state spending increased 24.5% in Vermont and its one of the smallest states in the country.
Compare that to Texas where in the same period, spending decreased 6.6%.
Running an itty bitty state is a lot different than running an entire country...

I've seen it; it's amazing. And I can tell you why there is so much: lawsuits. Parents suing the school to get every single thing they can think of, including a cab to school. That's why there's so much paperwork: because if the schools have ONE THING undocumented, the legal system will destroy them.

It's disgusting. I've seen kids that don't ever see there mother because she's out dating turn up at depositions with their parent, who is now demanding a laptop because her child isn't passing.

For any chance of government reform, we have to look at privatization and the medicare bill is a step in that direction.

Privatization of the the SS, Medicare and Medicaid entitlements most likely will be the next step that will keep federal government spending at, between 18% and 22% of GDP into the future.

Same as it ever was.

Go with the latter for a moment.

Where is there a Constitutional authorization to take my money to buy other folks' drugs?

Sometimes I think some of them are actually RATs

I wouldn't doubt it one bit. They just rant, like all good rats do.

The medicare bill is against the tenants of privatization. Congress is the one who can do something about the goverment. Bush can propose to them, but he can't do it himself. Didn't the GOP at a time want to get rid of the Dept. of Education? Whatever happened to that platform. Government is getting bigger every year, not only with size, but people's opinions of what government should be providing them are increasing. With that state of mind, their representatives would dare not go against their wishes.

It is "hearsay" one word (not to put you down, but I am a lawyer, and splitting the word was ugly on my eyes), and federal elected offices are not subject to term limits. SCOTUS I think dumped that one.

My boss is a die-hard Dean supporter. He refuses to hire anyone who is republican or conservative for any thing. I normally dont associate myself with liberals but he is fiscally conservative and extremely socially liberal though his upbringing has to account for that...
