Flying High for U.S. Troops (USO Alert)
USO; American Airlines Press Release ^ | Wednesday December 10, 2003

Posted on 12/10/2003 3:08:16 PM PST by anymouse

The USO is providing American Airlines AAdvantage® members with the opportunity to purchase a USO Care Package that will be sent to the troops this holiday season. By participating in "Operation USO Care Package," AAdvantage members will earn AAdvantage miles when they send these needed reminders of home to America's men and women in uniform who are deployed overseas.

Hundreds of thousands of service members around the world will be separated from their families during the holidays. Because of heightened security, individuals can no longer send letters and packages addressed 'Deliver to Any Service Member.' Approved and endorsed by the Department of Defense, the USO Care Package is a way to send a message of encouragement to a service member and provide 'a touch of home'.

With a $25 donation, AAdvantage members can sponsor a holiday care package and earn 125 AAdvantage miles as a thank you from the USO. These USO Care Packages include items the troops have requested, including a 100-minute pre- paid AT&T calling card, toiletries, disposable cameras, sunscreen and baby wipes.

"We are honored to be participating in the USO Care Package for the Holidays Program," said Jeff Zidell, Vice-President of the AAdvantage Marketing group at American Airlines. "The men and women of the U.S. armed forces serve our country day in and day out, and we are proud to offer our AAdvantage members a chance to personally thank them for their heroic efforts."

AAdvantage members can sponsor USO care packages at http://www.usocarepackage-aa.org . Members can purchase as many care packages as they wish and enter a personal note to the troops who will receive them. Members will be prompted to enter their AAdvantage number and, as a thank-you, the USO will post 125 miles to their account for each care package sponsored. Anyone who is not an AAdvantage member can visit www.aa.com/aadvantage to sign up and participate in this program.

To ensure the safety and privacy of each AAdvantage member's credit card, the USO has implemented software infrastructure provided by Kintera, Inc.

"The USO Care Package program is possible because of the support of corporations like American Airlines, its employees and its AAdvantage members," said Elaine Rogers, USO-Metro President and Worldwide Administrator for Operation USO Care Package.

Maybe AA has remembered who is keeping them flying.

Regardless of their motivation in participating, this hopefully will help motivate the public to send Christmas care packages to the troops.

I wonder if AA has been motivated a bit to do this with a bunch of soldiers
hubbing thru DFW during their 14-day R&R.
